GTAIV - PS3 vs 360

Recommended Posts

As much as 360? No, But the 360 is abnormally high (though it's slowing down thanks to the group of people that bought it for Halo, and only Halo - and yes that group exists)

Indeed my first Xbox was for Halo. Planning on getting a 360 for GTA, Halo 3, and Rainbow Six. Then whatever seems good. Time will tell when I get a 360 though, hopefully in May.

They did say the PS3's were easier to set up originally which is why we used them for Single Player. One major thing I noticed between the two consoles is that the PS3 has sharper graphics and much better shadows. It may just be down to the 360 version running off the development hard drive, but the shadows were quite jaggy and flickered a lot.

Someone said that

Just buy what ever console you want, there isn't the best console and we need all of them for competition...

exactly, without competition you get stuck pricing. Just look at bluray players and movies since HDdvds demise. They haven't gone down at all and some have even gone up.

I didnt want to post a new topic because there are enough gta4 topics already, but,

Should i get a console, just for this game, is it worth it? Because i bought a PS2 especially for Vice City but now i havent turned on the PS2 for longer than a year, all the gta's i play on the pc now, and all other games too.

Or should i wait on the pc version, if there will be a pc version? hmm :(

Before i consider getting a console,

Is GTA4 worth to buy a complete machine for? :o

Are there going to be any good exclusive console games?

Is it true that you have to pay for Xbox live, and does the 360 still have RROD problems?

I dont have a HDTV, do the graphics still look good on a SD tv, and can you connect the consoles to a computer monitor?

yeah kinda lot of questions but im not sure if i should save money and buy one, or save it and upgrade my pc in the future

According to my own experiences and kotaku, the Xbox 360 actually has the edge on performance ( FPS ).

Do you have a BenQ drive in your 360, It's on par with the PS3.

The Xbox 360 version seemed capable of achieving a smoother frame rate, peaking higher in certain circumstances, such as in confined spaces or during light traffic, but both versions seemed to regularly run at a similar clip.

But yes, 360 has a bit longer load times and a bit more pop-ins, but hardly noticeable.

Here's my comparative test from the Main thread;

Well,

Was over at a friends house, who has the Playstation 3 version and downloaded the Xbox 360 Version.

So we decided to compare the games, graphical wise. He has two 360's, an older one with a Hitachi drive i believe

and a newer one ( With the new Hardware inside ) and a BenQ drive.

First we played the Playstation 3 version for a few hours, looked great and all. So we decided to load up the 360 version on the Hitachi Box. I did notice increased texture popping, the warmer colors. The Anti-Aliasing IGN talked about i didn't notice whatsoever, possibly because i was paying attention to the game itself. The games looked identical, even though the 360 texture did have a more crisp look to 'em, but that could be in my head.

We loaded it up on the BenQ version and everything looked the same, except one thing, the texture popping was almost gone. It was pretty much on par with the Playstation 3 version. I'm guessing It's due to the more stable drive and stable load. ( Could also be a lucky game session where no texture popping occurred, can't say. )

I also noticed the Xbox 360 version had more defined HDR Lightning, which i didn't really notice in the Playstation 3 version, it seemed way more graduate on the Xbox 360 version.

But the PS3's 'colder' colors adds to the realism, imo - Even though you can easily set it up as you like via your TV's settings.

Loading times were a bit shorter on the PS3 version, i didn't count it though. ( They were almost on par on the BenQ drive, but still faster on the PS3 ).

So all this talk about Playstation 3 having 'an edge' is bullocks in my opinion, specially if you own a 360 with a BenQ drive, you are set. Both versions are on par when you add everything together, none of them have a real edge. So as stated many times, don't chose your version based on any graphical edges, you'll just be disappointed. Get the version for the console of preference, where your friends are.

So in my book, the positive and negative of both consoles add up to an EQUAL experience.

If you're really unsure, try looking for a videogame/DVD rental place near you, most of the big chains here also rent consoles, so it might be worth renting one and playing it just to see if you feel it's worth buying it for. Or find a friend that is getting it and have a GTA night with them.

Everything so far indicates that it's better than the previous GTA games, so if you really love them, it might just be worth buying a console for, but I'd recommend letting the dust settle before you decide either way and maybe look to see if there's other games on the consoles you'd be interested in.

For new console owners looking to buy GTAIV, the PS3 is the best choice. It's got the best performance for GTAIV and with MGS4 also on the horizon, PS3 will be a blast this summer.

For new console owners, consider what your friends have if they have 360 or PS3. That's why I dont have a PS3, I only have one friend that owns one. And he got it as bluray player not so much as a game system.

Check with your friends, if you plan on playing online. Always more fun playing with people you know IMO

I agree, if you're friends have a 360 get a 360 if they have a PS3 get a PS3.

The 360 gets additional content, the PS3 looks slightly better etc etc both have their pros and cons.

Okay, if you're pirating the game, the load speeds and pop-in's will be affected by the type of media you use, the speed of the burn, the type of drive doing the burning, and even the drive and its firmware on your 360. So don't be an idiot and compare a retail PS3 copy to a "backup" on the 360.

Hmm, well I went over to my friends and played the 360 version. The graphics looked good. It seemed as if AA was set low, there were lots of jaggies. The only thing that bothered me was the popups, i was driving a "corgette" and I drove and hit an invisible object that two seconds later appears as a playground set... This happened a few times.

Another problem I saw was some lag issues. There is a part of the first area that has a water fountain, when I view the fountain the fps drops considerably.

I haven?t played the ps3 version but if the only benefit will be no popups I really don?t see it as being a superior reason to call one absolutely better. I would imagine that they would have similar play.

yes but there's quite a few more Wii's out there than 360's, yet it's selling MILLIONS less software. The attach rate isn't going up much, nor is the 360's going down. Halo 3 was released more half a year ago, it's affect on the attach rate is over and done with, yet it still remains "abnormally high".

Also, if you're going to come off with anything like that, feel free to post some statistics to back up your claims.

Well as far as the NPD data I mentioned, that's NA-only, where 360 still has more units in homes.

Here's a solid attach rate number for North America. Notice the jump of 1.9, so yes it is going up. And historically speaking, yes a 7.5 attach rate is very high - believe me, I give full credit to the 360 and it's owners for that, but the Wii isn't crap in this field anymore either.

As for sales, 27 games have sold over a million units on Wii. And only 11 of them are from Nintendo. So you can't fall back to the 'well only Nintendo games sell' argument.

I doubt it will be much different than current games for both systems. The PS3 versions tend to have better smoothing and further draw distance and in almost all experiences better looking plant life.

"Tend to?" That seems a dubious claim to me. What technical reason would the PS3 have better "smoothing" (whatever you mean by that) or a farther drawing distance? Certainly the 360 should have the edge in the latter, on paper, given its power advantage.

Edit: Whoops, only read the first page and thought that was the end :)

Compare two retail copies of the game, then get back to us. The differences are so small, you would have to be running them side by side to notice a difference. Every review so far says this. There is not much pop in at all in the retail of the 360 version. As ienhz said earlier, you don't always get the same performance from a backup as of a retail copy.

Add in the fact that Live is way better for multiplayer than PSN, and the exclusive content, and you'd have to be a moron to get it on PS3 over 360 if you have the choice. The very slight performance increase in the PS3 version doesn't outweigh the positives of the 360 version. Not by a long shot. Guaranteed everyone who chose the PS3 version over 360 are going to be regretting it when that content comes out.

Well, they had help from both Microsoft and Sony engineers. So any optimization was made thanks to them. If one was better than the other, then one of those group of engineers was lacking or one console is more capable than the other in this kind of games.

Oh great, thanks Ji@n, I'm a moron now?

Stupid comment, people have reasons to buy on each platform (outside of small gfx differences), even if they own a 360 and a PS3.

And no, I'm not going to regret DLC I currently know nothing about, and from a personal standpoint I hardly ever buy DLC as it's usually over priced, or really not worth it - That even goes for MP stuff, although I'm more inclined to buy MP DLC than SP DLC to keep up with my friends online.

If GTA4 DLC is good, fair enough, but the SP campaign can take anywhere between 20-40 hours depending on your playing pace. That is long and im having a blast.

    • So how did you solve the problem? Disabling Secure Boot isn’t a solution.
    • Another devilish issue surrounding these certificates is what can happen with old, unsuspecting PCs that nevertheless have Secure Boot enabled. In my case, it was a Dell with a 3rd-gen Core chip (so about 13 years old). As of the last few weeks, it was suddenly BSOD'g within about 5 minutes of booting. Turns out it was because of MS's "Secure-Boot-Update" scheduled task, which is scheduled to run 5 minutes after login. It's explained in gory detail here (this is not my post, but it was where I found the answer), but the short version is that this legacy system would need fairly elaborate, manual certificate intervention since MS's automatic cert update method cannot work. How to do that is linked late in the thread. https://www.bleepingcomputer.c...od-caused-by-scheduled-task Secure Boot wasn't at all important for this particular PC, so I disabled it to be done with the problem.
