One interesting fact about the "Cheaters Lament", it doesn't cloak with spies :p

Had a really annoying player on our server who kept going on about how he had one and we didn't, he went spy, cloaked, walked out and instantly died

LOL, yeah. I kept dominating a few spies who - all but one - were oblivious to what was going on.

Personally, I saw little point of people running fake idling servers and didn't bother. They're just hats, and for weapons, if you play for under 2 hours each day you'll get all unlockables within two or three weeks.

Also, to add to mwpeck's question, the enemy team can see the halo, except that it's very blurry.

Does it show the same way on uncloaked disguised enemy spies? I saw a few disguised spies earlier with blurry halo's but they seemed to actually be friendly spies not enemy spies.

Ack, you're probably right. The blurry halos are probably for friendly spies only. If that's the case then enemy spies have a regular halo.

I simply follow a "no cheating whatsoever" policy. At times like this, it pays off. I get to run around with a halo to let others know of my honesty and integrity. I kid, I kid. Seriously though, it's a shame people had to resort to idling programs to get items. At times, I don't blame them because Valve's system is a little iffy. Sometimes it'll give you a bunch of items and other times you don't get anything.

Yeah that was basically the reason I started using the idling program. The people I play with online all had hats, some have even got 4-5 and I've got none  So Valve say they've improved the odds of getting hat. Wonder what the odds are now, only 50-1? :p

CHEATER!

<3 my Halo

People still feel the need to cheat using Wallhacks and Aimbots does that mean Counter Strike Source is broken? Or people who use Speedhacks and Teleporter Hacks and Automated Farming Programs in MMORPG's does that mean those are broken?

If you like the game play the game. Don't cheat for some cheap unlocks that you could earn with some patience.

Whether you like it or not, using external applications to "idle" is cheating the system. And one who cheats is a cheater. There's no point in justifying it because it's cheating, plain and simple.

Good thing the idler wasn't cheating....

Odd, works fine here...<edit> Fixed, they added an S onto the end of the file name before the extension.

If you use any kind of external program to automate your play = Cheating. As defined by Valve in their Blog entry on the TF2 Website.

If you use any kind of external program to automate your play = Cheating. As defined by Valve in their Blog entry on the TF2 Website.

The idler did not automate play, it did the same thing sitting in a server idling did. Does using a macro keyboard to automate things constitute a cheat? Yes, its not available to everyone and can potentially give you an advantage over someone else. Does using the idler to idle constitute a cheat? No, it is available to everyone and gives NO ADVANTAGE WHAT-SO-EVER over someone who sits in an achievement_idle server.

Instead of finding and listing the reasons on why the idler was not a cheat, I will just copy it from someone else who has already stated it on the TF2 forums.

Reason 1: Created from Valve's own released SDK information available to ALL programmers

Reason 2: Per stated ToS: External programs are covered if used for COMMERCIAL GAINS

Reason 3: Drunken f00l: Emailed Valve before full launch/thereabouts asking if it was ok, he wasn't told no

Reason 4: After numerous questions on the forums and users downloading DIRECTLY through the forums, users are being held responsible for Valve's inability to make a decision in regards to ok to run and also ok to post publicly on this very forum to the masses

Reason 5: Without any warning Valve blasts all players calling them "Cheaters" and "Morally Deficient" and to add to this factor gave 95% of the player-base a hat to use for the sole purpose of lording over the idlers

Reason 6: Achievement_Idle servers are ok, even though his application did the same thing, I guess they were more frustrated that steam didn't count the hours idling that way as opposed to being in a achievement_idle server...

In short, before Valve made that blog post, they never stated it was a cheat, they infact ignored commenting on it even when asked, which tells me it was legal up until the blog post. In the blog post they mentioned "not having a policy" against something like the idler, which tells me it was once again, per their own ToS and rules, legal up until the blog post.

So right now yes, the idler is now defined as a cheat by Valve, but it is no longer usable therefore that is irrelevant. Looking back to before the blog post that you mention, Valve never explicitly said its not a cheat, but at the same time they never mentioned it was a cheat or against their ToS.

When you say cheat, that would typically be something like a wall hack or aimbot, they are technically usable by everyone, but they give people an advantage. Where is the advantage in using the idler? Exactly, there is no advantage at all.

EDIT: The two most important points are 2 and 3. The ToS (before the blog post) had no mention of something like the idler and therefore was not against Valves rules at the time it was being used. In point 3, the creator emailed Valve and they did not comment on whether it was ok to use or not. Try emailing Valve asking them about an actual cheat (like a wallhack or aimbot) I guarantee you will get at least some sort of response about it telling you it is not ok to use.

All the idler did was tell steam you were connected to a server, I don't see how that gives you an unfair advantage in the game :p (especially since you can't play the game when the idlers running)

And yes, Valve themselves said there was no policy against the idler up until they called all the idlers names and took their stuff.

i think there is a thing in the agreement about using 3rd party utilities for anything, agreed they didn't say an idler specifically. but to use that as an excuse is just sad

    • Media Player Classic - Home Cinema 2.7.3 by Razvan Serea Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC) is a free and open-source video and audio player for Windows. MPC-HC is based on the original Guliverkli project (which is no longer maintained) and contains many additional features and bug fixes. As the continuation of the original Media Player Classic, MPC-HC isn’t flashy but it works with nearly any media format. MPC-HC uses DXVA technology to pass decoding operations to your modern video card, enhancing your viewing experience. And MPC-HC supports both physical and software DVDs with menus, chapter navigation, and subtitles. Overview of features A lot of people seem to be unaware of some of the awesome features that have been added to MPC-HC in the past years. Here is a list of useful options and features that everyone should know about: Dark interface Menu > View > Dark Theme When using dark theme it is also possible to change the height of the seekbar and size of the toolbar buttons. Options > Advanced Video preview on the seekbar Options > Tweaks > Show preview on seek bar Adjust playback speed Menu > Play > Playback rate The buttons in the player that control playback rate take a 2x step by default. This can be customized to smaller values (like 10%): Options > Playback > Speed step Adjusting playback speed works best with the internal audio renderer. This also has automatic pitch correction. Options > Playback > Output > Audio Renderer MPC-HC can remember playback position, so you can resume from that point later Options > Player > History You can quickly seek through a video with Ctrl + Mouse Scrollwheel. You can jump to next/previous file in a folder by pressing PageUp/PageDown. You can perform automatic actions at end of file. For example to go to next file or close player. Options > Playback > After Playback (permanent setting) Menu > Play > After Playback (for current file only) A-B repeat - You can loop a segment of a video. Press [ and ] to set start and stop markers. You can rotate/flip/mirror/stretch/zoom the video Menu > View > Pan&Scan This is also easily done with hotkeys (see below). There are lots of keyboard hotkeys and mouse actions to control the player. They can be customized as well. Options > Player > Keys Tip: there is a search box above the table. You can stream videos directly from Youtube and many other video websites You can stream videos directly from Youtube and many other video websites Put yt-dlp.exe or youtube-dl.exe in the MPC-HC installation folder. Then you can open website URLs in the player: Menu > File > Open File/URL You can even download those videos: Menu > File > Save a copy Tip: to be able to download in best quality with yt-dlp/youtube-dl, it is recommended to also put ffmpeg.exe in the MPC-HC folder. Several YDL configuration options are found here: Options > Advanced This includes an option to specify the location of the .exe in case you don't want to put it in MPC-HC folder. Play HDR video This requires using madVR or MPC Video Renderer. After installation these renderers can be selected here: Options > Playback > Output Ability to search for and download subtitles, either automatically or manually (press D): Options > Subtitles > Misc Besides all these (new) features, there have also been many bugfixes and internal improvements in the player in the past years that give better performance and stability. It also has updated internal codecs. Support was added for CUE sheets, WebVTT subtitles, etc. Media Player Classic - Home Cinema 2.7.3 changelog: Updated LAV Filters to version 0.82 Updated MPC Video Renderer to version 0.10.4.2550 Updated MPC Audio Renderer A few crash fixes, bug fixes and small improvements. • Microsoft will finally let you sign in to Edge with a Google account by Usama Jawad As things currently stand, Microsoft Edge only allows you to sign in to the browser with a Microsoft Account (MSA). This allows you to sync your browser settings and other data across other devices, as long as you sign in with the same account. However, Microsoft is now modifying this mechanism in a way that will likely please many users. In an update to its Microsoft 365 Roadmap, Microsoft has indicated that it will soon let users sign into Edge using a Google account from the profile menu and the Edge sign-in screen. This will be in addition to the MSA login option, and it opens up new doors for people who prefer using Edge, but cannot be bothered to configure a Microsoft account. This brings several advantages such as the ability to sync your data across devices using just a Google account. It may even facilitate flexible single sign-on (SSO) experiences where you can quickly login to websites and services through a single Google account that is presented as the preferred sign-in option. Up until now, Microsoft allowed customers to indirectly use a Google account, by configuring a Google account as a Microsoft account, or by setting up a one-way sync option between Edge and Chrome. This is a rather interesting development, especially considering that Google Chrome still limits you to a Google account sign-in, but it will be interesting to see if the company reciprocates Microsoft's gesture in the future. This is not the only recent instance in which Microsoft has extended a handshake to Google via Edge. In April 2026, it began tracking the development of a work search banner for Google Search queries, just like the one present in Edge. However, if we go back almost seven years, to January 2020, Microsoft had emphasized that it had no plans to "integrate Google services into Microsoft Edge by default", in response to people requesting Google sign-in services on Edge. Fast-forward to today, and Microsoft is planning to release this feature in July 2026, with IT admins having the option to control its availability on Windows and macOS through the NonMicrosoftAccountSignInEnabled policy.
    • If they ever come out and say the AI is no longer accessible to the gen pop people aren't going to know how to tie their own shoelaces.
    • It's hard not to when they are shoehorning Ai into EVERYTHING. Some are active users by choice, I bet a lot of them are because it's shoved in their face the entire time.
