[Official] PS3 Game Sharing

Recommended Posts

INSTRUCTIONS/FAQ ON GAME SHARING

For the "sender":

1. Purchase and download a game from the Playstation Store

2. Go to account management for the account and delete the billing information from your personal information if the PS3 saved your credit card info

3. Change your password temporarily for the share

4. Give login info (email address and password) to the receiver

5. When the share is completed, change the password

For the "receiver":

1. In the PS3 XMB menu, add a new user account on your PS3 and sign in to it

2. Select the network on the XMB and create an existing Playstation Network account

3. Use the login information given from the "sender" to create the existing account

4. Login into the account

5. Enter into the Playstation store

6. Click on "Download List" on the upper right near the person's userID and select the game you wish to download and hit download

7. After game is downloaded, notify the "sender" that the download is complete so they can change the password to the account

8. Enjoy!

Q/A:

Q: Should I worry about misuse for my account?

A: If you taken the steps to delete your credit card/billing information and changed your password temporary, it should be safe. If you're paranoid about someone stealing your account, only share with people that you really, really trust

Q: Can't I just make a sub-account and use that to share the games?

A: Not sure if this is allowed, but someone could try and report the results

Q: I just received the game from the sender and the game won't play, help!

A: In order to play the game on your PS3, the game must be activated AND the user account that was used to download the game must stay on your PS3. For example, say you created user account "User1" on your local Playstation 3 and you downloaded a full version of Lemmings. After you download the game, you MUST keep "User1" on your Playstation 3 in order for the game to run on your PS3. If you somehow delete the user account, you must relogin with the sender's account and redownload the game. If the game is still on your HDD, simply redownload then cancel to re-authorize the game.

Q: Do I have to login with the sender's account to play the game?

A: No, it just needs to be authorized on your PS3. You can play the game using your account thereafter. Just do not delete the user account as mentioned above or else the game will be locked out.

Q: I'm trying to download the game from the Playstation store but it is not appearing in the store. Where is it?

A: Games that are purchased disappear from the store. You have to download the game going through the "Download List" screen on the upper right of the Playstation Store.

Q: How many times can I share a game?

A: The store says you can share up to 5 different Playstation 3's.

Btw, to all the guys sharing their games, bare in mind that once you have shared something with up to 4 different people (not including yourself), you wont be able to share anything else with anyone. The number of shares is account related, not game related.
When a PS3 is activated under a given PSN account, it can run the software downloaded (purchased) from the PlayStation store under that PSN account. The activation is automatic the first time you log in with a given PSN account, meaning whatever you download from then on will work fine.

Deactivating a PS3 (or a PSP) basically makes content downloaded under a given PSN account unreadable on that system. You can safely try this yourself. Deactivate your system > try launching any already downloaded game (wont work) > re-activate your system > content will now work fine as before.

This is mostly useful when you want to share stuff you downloaded (purchased) with other people. To do so you have to let them log in as you from their PS3s. So you basically have to give them your log in data (email + password). Once they log in as you, their PS3s are automatically activated (hence, by accessing the "Download List" section on the PS store, they can re-download for free and run on their systems all the stuff you purchased). When a grand total of 5 PS3s are activated under the same PSN account, no more PS3s can be activated, therefore you cannot share your PSN account with more that 4 other people at a time.

If, say, you want to share your PSN account with a new friend but have all those extra 4 activations already in place on other PS3s, you have to de-activate one of these so that your new friend can activate his system under your PSN account.

Also note that deleting a profile via the XMB from a PS3 doesnt automatically deactivate it under the PSN account associated to that profile. It has to be "manually" deactivated from the account management page in order to free one of those 5 activations. So if a friend of yours is using your PSN account and decides to dispose of his PS3 system, tell him to do the deactivation thing (log in as you > Account Management > Activate System > PlayStation 3 (this system) > Deactivate system), otherwise you'll lose one of your possible activations. Simply deleting the profile associated with your PSN account or formatting the HDD is not enough.

I just shared WipeoutHD with Sethos and DM.

My account is used to download like the instructions say above, however they both use their own account to play, and I gain control of my account again.

Trust is vital, but we have a close knit community here of well known individuals.

However only share with people you feel you can trust, and as added precaution like it states above, remove your credit card details before doing so.

Giving something for free is nice, but I'm sure we can exchange things between ourselves as well :)

Or you could buy the games and provide incentive to the developers that made them to keep bringing games to this platform.

You do know they chose to make the game shareable, right?

This is an excellent idea and when developers offer up their games for free, why not use it?

I like the sound of this. Anybody know if Little Big Planet beta can be shared?? If so, i have plenty of games to share with it!!!

List of what i have to share;

Wipeout HD

Stardus

Lastman standing

Super Rub A Dub

Monsters

Go Puzzle

Flow

Blast Factor

Every Day Shooter

And maybe some others, not at my ps3 atm.

Edited by King Antonius

Okay here is my list

Own

Siren

Wipeout HD

Everdayshooter

FlOw

Super Stardust HD

Warhawk

Looking for/Exchange for

PixelJunk Eden/Monsters

The Last Guy

Green = Shareable

Red = Not Shareable

Black = Unknown as of yet (updated ASAP)

edit: I'll add a list of games/statuses to post 1 for everything on PSN to let people know what can and cannot be shared (Y)

Good idea... I have Super Stardust HD, Eden and Wipeout HD if anyone is interested in an exchange.

BTW... would this work for LBP... download the beta and play using another account? :p

I believe the LBP can be shared, but it's got some sort of limitations attached.

I'll find out what they are again.

Something to do with once the person shares, the original owner can't play again for 24 hours. After 24 hours the original owner can log in and play again, but that then locks out the second downloader for 24 hours, rinse/repeat.

I'm sure that's how it works.

I think the same happens with Warhawk.

So they aren't truly shareable, but you can play them if the person you download through doesn't mind waiting a bit of time to play again.

Edited by Audioboxer

For those that do it, defiantly make sure you trust the person, and don't go doing it with random forum people either unless you know you can trust them, or at least the community trusts them.

I think us lot that spend half our loves in the gamers hangout are good and trustworthy. :D

Though I personally still wouldn't do this, but I hope those who are enjoy the games that they wouldn't of purchased otherwise.

I never knew how this really worked until tonight, but AB shared Wipeout and it went without a hitch (Y)

I don't have many PSN games, what I do have is:

Super Stardust HD

Loco Roco Cocoreccho

LBP beta

Socom beta

and the Motorstorm 2 demo (is that still exclusive?)

I'm not sure if the Socom beta and MS2 demo are share-able, but if they are I'd be up for it.

I do have some concerns about the whole passing username/passwords around, so as long as I know you fairly well / trust you then I'm up for a swap.

So basically if you have Wipeout you give someone else your password, they log in with it, download the game, and then tell you so you can change your password. Then you have to keep the other user you made on your system so the game will still be playable. But then you can play it with your own account correct? Doesn't sound to bad if that is the way it goes. Just would take me ages to download the game before the person who shared it with me could change their password.

Some more info

Simply deleting the profile associated with your PSN account or formatting the HDD is not enough.

The master account (account which shares go through) is always safe for re-downloading as long as you know the password (Y)

The only issue is if the 4 people you share WipeoutHD with sell their systems without deactivating, you won't be able to share WipeoutHD with any other systems apart from those ones (at that point you then won't know who owns them, therefore share wasted).

Is it possible for Sethos and I to share Wipeout to a further 5 people? I'm guessing not, but thought I'd ask anyway.

I don't think so, as I'm the owner of Wipeout.

Like, Wipeout won't show up in the store under your account as downloadable, like it would on mine!

Haves:

Siren

Pixel Junk Eden

Looking for:

Burnout !!!!! and...

Anything i dont have (including Ps1 Games)

Interested in a swap of either/both

Super Star Dust HD/Everyday Shooter?

for

Pixel Junk Eden?

I'd just like to say a big thanks to Audioboxer for sharing WipEout HD with me!!! :) I'll remember to share with you when I open up my new bank account. ;)

If anyone here is willing to share sometime in the future, here's what I'm planning to get:

  • Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection
  • Go! Sudoku
  • Calling All Cars! (maybe)
  • Elefunk
  • Fatal Inertia EX
  • Feel Ski (maybe)
  • GripShift (maybe; will try it out again on the Xbox Live Arcade)
  • Pain (maybe)
  • PixelJunk Eden (maybe)
  • PixelJunk Monsters (possibly, as I love tower defense games!)
  • PixelJunk Racers (maybe)

I'll be willing to share these for most games I don't have on the PSN, except for Warhawk and GT5 Prologue, as I already have them on Blu-Ray.

I'll post here again when I've got my account set up and the games downloaded! ;)

Would anyone be willing to let me test Warhawk for a few hours? I've always been unsure of it and didn't want to drop the ?20+ for a series I've never played. They have my word I'd deactive it after playing.

In no rush though, doesn't have to be tonight.

Warhawk will block out the original owner for 24 hours, it's not shareable like Wipeout HD.

If someone doesn't play it a lot, I'm sure they won't mind though.

It's basically just a case of Warhawk can be played on one system every 24 hours. After 24 hours, once the original buyer re-logs, you get blocked out for 24 hours, rinse/repeat.
