[Official] Left 4 Dead

I agree, it's an absolutely amazing game. Totally lives up to the hype.

The only complaint I have is on the PC version - Valve get rid of that matchmaking crap and add a server browser stat!

WTF this has no server browser?

DO NOT DO THAT VALVE (N)

Matchmaking only is for gimped console devs who are lazy (server browsers can be done on consoles, more devs need to do it), not the PC.

Can't wait to try this!

Oh please, matchmaking is freakin' awesome and is the way of the future.

Ohh hell no as the only method (N)

If they want to do server browser AND matchmaking, okay, choice is good.

I like to choose what map I play, choose the people I play with/regular with, choose the ping of the server, etc.

Take that away from me, and you're gimping my choices and forcing me to play the game how some random algorithm chooses.

Console games have recently been starting to get server browsers and it's awesome.

Matchmaking is the number one cause of getting put in a server with aggressive 10 year olds, idiots and pre-pubescent teens who feel the need to abuse everyone. Or getting put on a map/game mode you don't particularly want to play.

I don't think it fits on the PC, I'd like to see regular old servers browsers there but on the consoles it's perfect.

You don't have some 'favourite' maps which is constantly played because its on a set rotation. You don't have tons of random rules on each server which is beyond annoying, just some default standard rules all around. Matchmaking in other games has rarely to never put me in a laggy game, so I don't need to see pings really.

I love matchmaking, specially when it features a party system - Glad they are pushing it in most games (Y)

Precisely, which is why I'm moaning.

Impressions from this thread are the PC version is matchmaking only, which IMO if true is a disaster of epic proportions.

And FTR, every server I go on in TF2 (PC) is bound to standard rules and maps, but I still prefer to choose my game mode/map, choose the people I'm with, and sort the list by server ping.

Matchmaking as an option on PC, on consoles I can still see why it's the only option in many cases, however I urge more console developers to put in server browsers as well.

I despise Matchmaking as it gives me hardly any control over anything.

I go online to choose what I want to play, not randomly be assigned to teams/maps. It's the main reason I don't game much online on the console, aside from when I'm with friends.

Putting me in a game mode I don't want to play, or with a bunch of idiots is wasting my time online and in many games you get penalized for team quitting once a game has started.

Each to their own I guess :)

I don't see why you constantly mention lack of game-mode control, there is exactly one game I know of which won't let you choose game-mode, that is Halo, any other?

Not turning this into a listing match, I've said my bit on matchmaking and my rant was mainly inspired by the news of matchmaking on the PC version of L4D, not the 360 version.

I know the situation consoles are in, I live with it.

However I don't want PC games going back the way.

Just admit pretty much all games let you choose game-mode then :p

Yeah you can choose a game mode, but you can still get lumped on maps you don't want to play and with retarded team mates.

It's the Fisher Price way of gaming online.

"Hit this big button and you get to play instantly!"

Instead of being able to micro manage all the settings and choose your own path to online, who you play with, etc.

Things are the way they are, PC's have always been ideal for customization of servers/maps/game modes online, consoles not so much due to the "P2P" gaming.

However more and more console games are doing both match making and server lists and I'm happy with that.

What I'm not happy with though is a PC game ditching it's roots and going matchmaking only.

    • Absolutely NOBODY has suggested such a conclusion. I am affirming the sober reality check that AV2's overall market adoption will take longer than AV1's adoption rate -- which, by the way, is the whole point of the article! While PCI-SIG is productive (on paper), other WGs have created all sorts of confusing progress plans that consumers have tuned-out of their improvements... HTML/W3C, USB, HDMI, BT, WIFI (ieee802.11) as a few other groups where spec naming conventions, split progress paths, overlapping ambitions... I'm not critiquing the AV specs group; I'm simply affirming that adoption for AV2 faces headwinds beyond the macroeconomics of it all.
