Spotify - Amazing Legal music App

Question

I came across www.spotify.com a few days ago, and I must say it's amazing! Been using it ever since, and haven't had a need to open itunes at all. Has pretty much every song I search for, and plays instantly with no buffering or problems etc, for a beta its very good. Anyway, it was invite only but today it's gone public so anyone and everyone can sign up. Give it a go, see what you think, i think it's a new revolution in how we will listen to music in the future.

Here's a review: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=LQC2eBQ7Lsk

Sounds pretty good, I've been looking for something like this since Last.FM only gives you 30 second previews for most songs, and those you do get full versions of you can only listen to in full for 3 plays.

If there are any invites going, I'll take one

sounds interesting. can i get an invite? :p

Not bad (Y)

By the way, how do they add content to this?

I searched for an artist and found the two bonus songs off the Japanese version of an album, but the album itself isn't there

Do they update content on some sort of request based focus?

They say they're constantly adding new content and songs all the time, and claim they want to have "all songs" on it eventually.

Though, as it's legal they need to get permission from the artists/record labels to add to its database. For those they don't have permission for, sometimes a few of their songs are still there under other albums or cds, such as "Now that's what I call music" etc, which they have rights for. Hopefully eventually they'll have the artists permission to add all their albums and singles.

There are rumours that they're adding content based on number of searches for a particular artist or album, but they haven't confirmed that.

Spotify is a swedish company, and for the moment only europeans are able to join.

There is an interview in with the owner in Metro:

http://www.metro.se/se/article/2008/12/03/...47-45/index.xml

It?s in swedish, but you can try to translate in Google.

He says that they currently have over 4 million songs, and they are adding 15 000 - 20 000 new everyday.

They are probably going to do a mobile version, but first they want to make a perfect pc/mac version.

I didn't think I'd be using it already but I am!

I used http://www.daveproxy.co.uk/ to register, no invite required so I don't know why you're asking  Downloaded and listening to music quick snap.

hmm, strange. if you do it through daveproxy it takes you to a registration page that works!

edit: try using this url https://www.spotify.com/en/get-started/

Is it possible to save the files?
By default the files are cached in %HOMEPATH%\AppData\Local\Spotify (Vista) but they're split up into many files and folders. I copied the directory but I can't play the biggest cached .file with VLC. I don't know what else to try tbh.

For educational purposes only of course.

This service is actually surprisingly good. Here's one of it's cool features; linking to a song.

The songs load with minimal buffering and the average song download is about 6MB I think. It eats up bandwidth which is a problem for people on a data caps.

Now I don't support piracy, but why on earth would you guys want to save 160kbps streamed encodes... when... you know :p

In regards to the app, very happy with it will be useful for giving new stuff a spin and when I'm on PC's that don't have my music collection.

Yeah... I do know :p It's V0 or Flac all the way for me, but it would still be cool to grab the odd track, and you have to admit that the sound quality is pretty damn good for streamed music.

Just been trying this program out thanks to the invitation that I was very kindly given by Johnston (many thanks to you!), and I love it, it's a fantastic way to listen to music that you might not buy for whatever reason!

I've no invites left now, but apparently if you go to https://www.spotify.com/en/get-started/ you can signup without an invite :)

Thanks very much! I've installed it and using it right now. The application is stupidly fast, and songs begin playing almost immediately. I love it :D

I can also confirm that Spotify works fine on Ubuntu using WINE to install :)

I had a invite code from Johnson (thanks) but unfortunately it ha already been used, so I followed the link given above (https://www.spotify.com/en/get-started/) to create an account which worked. However I have an issue, a pretty big one really. When I downloaded the exe file, I ran it and it installed ok, however when running it it and entering my details Nod32/Eset Firewall kept asking to give permission for spotify exe to connect to my router (192.168.1.1) which I kept denying, I eventually made a rule saying it could not connect to 192.168.1.1 and then it started asking to connect to 192.168.1.2 and eset crashed.

I have uninstalled it, but did anyone else have a similar experience?

    • Stop asking people that. It's a "No True Scotsman" argument in that you are attempting to discredit the opinions of a person by Attacking the Messenger. The reason that these are logical fallacies is the TRUTH is based on facts as supported by evidence. Nothing else. So, always debate the facts with evidence to reach the truth. Once you learn to do this, you'll be able to recognize when people are fearmongering and lying to you for their own selfish ends.
    • It doesn't matter if you didn't directly hear it from person X or Y. Every one of your statements comes straight from the racist, skinhead, anti-immigrant, be afraid of everything, "they are all taking our jobs", etc. etc. mouthpieces. That's where Farag and Putin heard it from too...and used it against the UK. So, while you keep disavowing the people who publicly peddled that position, you keep proving over and over again that those lies influenced you into being tricked when the Brexit vote came around too. In fact, your final sentence makes it crystal clear that it was the racist/anti-immigrant lies you fell and voted for, since you stated that you didn't have an issue with the economic trade issues with the EU. Ahem. To be clear, all of these LIES are EONS old, mate. They are the same fearmongering lies peddled to the same ignorant, gullible cowards by the same charlatans, snake-oil salesmen, and would be demagogues who've been doing this since caveman Ugh lied about his slightly different neighbor in order to steal his land. And, finally, you answered your own previous question. The reason that the EU isn't clamoring to bring the UK back is that they have had enough of people who would rather shoot themselves in the foot than get over their "insecurity issues". It's the same reason the entire world is moving away from the USA as fast as it can...
