I love how even the pause button in this game is harsh, it brings up the pause menu as an overlay, gameplay continues meaning you're vulnerable  Can't pause during a difficult boss battle to rethink things!

Started as a Royal :)

Seeing other people playing online as ghosts is really cool, makes you feel not alone.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Almost beat the Vanguard (Tutorial Boss that you're not really suppose to defeat, the game carries on even if you die).

Got it down to about 2-3 more hits and it one hit killed me :(

Screw that, reload and attempt number 2 :p

ps. I'm loving how this game feels, I almost died from the normal soldiers in the tutorial

I gave up on trying to beat Vanguard in the tutorial and I'd wager you will too. :p You'll get your revenge later on in the game though. I love the messages people leave, the most popular and annoying one is "this is harsh, evaluate me". I've seen some funny ones involving "sticky white stuff" and "rod weapon" heh.

Yeah it's off-putting to keep trying as you need to spend another 5 mins running through the tutorial level again.

I'll try it once again, maybe once more after that.

One bad roll/dodge and you're dead.

Standing outside the room just now, it's funny how you can look through the fog and see it. Can hear it groaning also :p

I tried 4 more times but couldn't get anywhere near as close to my first attempt. Beginners luck :p

On with the story, I'm just a completionist like that, if I know something can be done early I'll try and try again to do it LOL.

Anyone got any tips for me before I do 1-1? Is there any loot or anything I should know about?

Well, this sucks. I load up the game and it tells me that I cannot play online due to a parental lock. I guess the age for playing this online in China is 19. It's ridiculous - in the UK the age would probably be 18, which I am, but it still applies because of where the game came from. I live on my own, bought my PS3 with my own money, can drink, vote, be sentenced to prison, but I can't play a Playstation game online :/

I've done some searching and apparently when I do turn 19 in a couple of months it still won't let me play, so I'm stuck having to either create a new account to play this game with, or never experience online play. I've sent a message to Sony on their customer services page, but I might ring them tomorrow, see if they can do anything - apparently this happens with Metal Gear Solid Online too and you can contact Sony to sort it out.

I absolutely love the game though, I've played through 1-1 and 2-1 as my Royal so far.

I think you can change the restriction level in Security Settings. By default the restriction level is 9 which means only 18+ can play restricted games. Setting it to 0 should allow you to play. My terminology my be off as I'm at work and I don't recall exactly but that's the gist of it.

There's a separate parental control built into the game concerning online play - I've read it also happens in MGSO and Call of Duty. The parental controls in the security setting were set to Level 9, and the first thing I did after getting the error message was change it to Off.

I'm getting really tempted to buy this, but I don't wanna pay nearly ?50 for one of the Asian versions, especially when the USA version is not too far round the corner now. Hopefully the US import versions will be just below the ?40 mark, but I bet I'll have to dream on:p:p

God damnit some Red Eye Knight in 1-1 just owned me. I take it I'm not suppose to go that way? There was about 4 different paths.

Someone left a message on the floor kind of hinting that I should turn around and not fight if a newbie

I think the online mode in this is quite genius considering the type of game it is. All the messages and bloodstains left behind by other players.

Yeah, he's a tough one - best to leave him for now. I went back after a while when I got the Soul Light spell, which one-shots blue-eyed knights, but he was blocking every one, so I led him back to that pit and played cat and mouse with him until he fell in. I don't think you can access the door he guards yet anyway - I couldn't.

Leave that area for later in the game, like the messages suggest. :D You'll need the Mausoleum Key to open the door anyway but inside you'll get a sweet sword from someone. I'm trying to be as vague as possible. :p Also killing the Red Knight gives you 2,000 souls which helps early on in the game.

Will do!

What do you recommend I do after 1-1?

2-1? I've read some people say it's easier than 1-2.

I've just found out why,

If you rate them, the person who left the message gets their health replenished which is why you keeping seeing "This is harsh.Evaluate me" messages near boss areas. Message also stays longer if there is many ratings.

This game is awesome, I'm loving it. Once you die in a level and have to track back to reclaim your souls the tension is unbearable, especially if you've racked up thousands of souls. I'm right to assume if you die again and don't make it back to your body you lose the souls? That's what I'm led to believe anyway hence the tension :p

Audioboxer spam in here now... haha.

Beat Phalanx, only died once.

Got my B_stard Sword, and Heater Shield combo on the go now after upgrading my strength. Shield is good does 100% melee damage block. Only thing I noticed which is cruel is if you upgrade a stat the prices for ALL the stats increase  I might try taking on that Red Eye Knight now...

The game just wants to do things to make it harsh on you!

I'm not sure where to go after 1-1, going to grind through it once more then maybe try 1-2.

I'm really wondering if I should pick this up just yet, or play through what I have already.....

Not started inFAMOUS yet, still yet to complete GTA4 also have Fallout 3 as well to start. I'm thinking this would be another game that I want to play, just never get around to doing so. Oh and also want to complete Killzone 2 on Elite.

DAMNIT!

I just got my body form back after beating the boss in 1-1, joined 2-1, decided to go to the toilet then came back to a black phantom finishing me off :(

Or whatever you call it when a player invades your game, it's a black phantom right? Really unfair, the guy should of noticed my guy was AFK and waited for me to come back to give me a chance :p

Why would he do that when he gets a free easy kill and his body back?

I seem to be doing quite well - I haven't died once to a boss yet. Tons of times to the levels preceding them, but never to a boss.

Why would he do that when he gets a free easy kill and his body back?

*facepalm* It's a joke.

@AB, ow, that is harsh. It's also making want this game more though! :p I'm gonna have to wait until around my birthday in August at least though. I'm getting Ferrari Challenge this week, then I'm saving up a bit for Fight Night Round 4, then after that I'm saving up to pre-order all the fall games that are coming out that I want (Forza 3, GT5, Assassin's Creed 2, Splinter Cell Conviction).

Ahhh I didn't know they get their body back, fair enough. I thought they just get souls. (and yeah it was more of a joke than a serious remark :p but I genuinely didn't know they get their body back)

Yeah I'm doing pretty good, in 2-1 now.

How do you get soul light by the way?

Ha, that sucks. I've played 35 hours and I haven't been invaded yet. I did try co-op once on the Adjudicator boss and that was fun. You can get Soul Light after you save Sage Freke from the Tower of Latria, you'll also need the Doll Demon's soul to purchase it. Soul Light is great, I still use it.

Just a question but do you have to be logged into PSN to play this game as my connection is sometimes flaky?

As far as I'm aware you can play it in offline mode by simply not signing into PSN, but if you do play it while connected nothing will happen if your connection drops, I think the only thing would be that phantoms in your game would be booted - you wouldn't lose progress or anything.

Thanks, may well order this tonight in that case then :D

    • Transmission 4.1.2 by Razvan Serea Transmission is a fast, easy-to-use bittorrent client with support for encryption, a web interface, peer exchange, magnet links, DHT, µTP, UPnP and NAT-PMP port forwarding, webseed support, watch directories, tracker editing, global and per-torrent speed limits, and more. Transmission has one of the lowest memory & resource footprints of any major BitTorrent client. Transmission's light overhead is one reason why it is so well suited for home NAS and media servers. Having been used by Western Digital, Zyxel and Belkin, Transmission gives truly impressive performance on almost any compatible hardware. Transmission is an open source, volunteer-based project. Unlike some BitTorrent clients, Transmission doesn't play games with its users to make money. Transmission doesn't bundle toolbars, pop-up ads, flash ads, twitter tools, or anything else. It doesn't hold some features back for a payware version. Its source code is available for anyone to review. Transmission doesn't track users, the website and forums have no third-party ads or analytics. Transmission 4.1.2 changelog: This is Transmission 4.1.2, a bugfix release. It fixes 20+ bugs and has a few performance improvements too. All users are encouraged to upgrade to this version. Highlights Fixed 4.1.0 bug that could cause duplicate HTTP announces to be sent to trackers. (#8639) All Platforms Reject benc data that has invalid characters. (#8577) Fixed a bug during the startup sequence where if one torrent failed to parse, subsequent torrents would also fail. (#8605) Fixed a bug that stalled some downloads at 99%. (#8654) Fixed a 4.1.0 upgrade bug that could overwrite utp_enabled and tcp_enabled settings. (#8658) Fixed a 4.1.0 crash that could happen when a peer supplied reqq value smaller than 32 in LTEP handshake. (#8713) Fixed a 4.1.0 regression that periodically wrote upload & download stats to disk even when Transmission had been idle since the last write, preventing the stats file's disk from hibernating while idle. (#8722) Fixed a 4.1.0 bug that prevented TCP peer connections on some systems. (#8748) Added safeguards to HTTP responses to prevent clickjacking. (#8749) Fixed edge case that didn't preserve the order of a batch of torrents when moving their queue position up or down. • The sweet release of death has never looked more appealing.
    • Meh, just another dongle-haven downgrade compared to my Surface Pro 7+. Whenever I decide to upgrade in the next decade or so, it certainly won't be another microslop Surface with this enshitification trend they've been having after the Surface Pro 7+. Hopefully a future generation of the Framework 12 will be a real upgrade...
    • This could exactly be how our Sun ends but it's not as simple by Sayan Sen Image by Drew Rae via Pexels An international team led by Université de Montréal (University of Montreal) PhD student Érika Le Bourdais has found that the ancient white dwarf star LSPM J0207+3331 is still pulling in planetary debris, even though it has been cooling for about three billion years. White dwarfs are dense, Earth-sized stellar remnants left behind when Sun-like stars exhaust their nuclear fuel and shed their outer layers. The star, located 145 light-years away in the constellation Triangulum, is the oldest and coldest white dwarf known to have a surrounding disk of dust. The star was first spotted in 2019 by a citizen scientist through the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 project. Its cool temperature immediately suggested that it was very old, since white dwarfs gradually lose heat over time. Using the W. M. Keck telescopes in Hawaii, astronomers later confirmed that the star shows infrared signals consistent with dust rings formed by asteroids breaking apart under its strong gravity. Such infrared excesses occur when a star emits more infrared light than expected, often because warm dust surrounding it absorbs and re-radiates energy. “This discovery challenges our understanding of planetary system evolution,” said Le Bourdais. “The fact that we still see planetary debris being accreted three billion years after the star became a white dwarf suggests that asteroids, comets, and even planets can remain in orbit around these stars for a very long time.” Spectroscopic analysis—a technique that studies light to identify the chemical elements present in an object—revealed thirteen heavy elements in the star’s atmosphere: sodium, magnesium, aluminium, silicon, calcium, titanium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, and strontium. Normally, heavy elements sink quickly in hydrogen-rich white dwarfs, making them hard to detect. “We expected to see only a few elements, but we found dozens!” explained Le Bourdais. The research paper adds more detail. The absence of carbon features suggests the debris came from a carbon-volatile-depleted source. The abundance pattern shows slight deficits of magnesium and silicon compared to iron but otherwise resembles Earth-like material. This points to a differentiated rocky body—one whose materials have separated into distinct layers such as a metallic core and rocky mantle—with a metallic core fraction higher than Earth’s. In other words, the star is accreting the remains of a large rocky object, similar in structure to Earth or the asteroid Vesta. “White dwarfs offer one of the only ways we can directly measure the composition of exoplanets,” said Patrick Dufour, co-author and professor at Université de Montréal. “When planetary debris come too close, they are torn apart by the star’s gravity and end up polluting its atmosphere, leaving a detailed chemical fingerprint of its composition.” The team also detected weak Ca II H & K line core emission, making this only the second known isolated polluted white dwarf to show this feature. These are specific spectral signatures produced by ionised calcium and can indicate unusual physical activity in a star’s upper atmosphere. The finding suggests that extra physical processes may be happening in or above the star’s upper atmosphere. The study stresses the importance of including heavy elements in model atmosphere calculations, since leaving them out can distort the inferred structure and lead to inaccurate stellar parameters. Earlier work suggested the star’s infrared excess came from two dust rings. The new analysis shows that a single silicate dust disk—a ring composed largely of rock-forming minerals rich in silicon and oxygen—can explain the observed signal at 11.6 μm, simplifying the picture of the system’s structure. The question of how debris ended up falling into the star so late remains open. One idea is that giant planets in the system slowly destabilised smaller bodies over billions of years. Another possibility is that a passing star disturbed the orbits of debris. “Future observations with the James Webb Space Telescope or archival data found in the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission could help distinguish between a planetary rearrangement and the gravitational effect of a close stellar encounter,” said John Debes, co-author and researcher at the Space Telescope Science Institute. Dufour noted that hydrogen-rich white dwarfs are the most common type, and the coolest among them are the oldest stars in the galaxy. “We didn't have the habit of looking for signs of accretion in them. This unique case motivates us to expand our search to more of these stars.” The findings show that even after billions of years, planetary systems can remain active and complex. Substantial accretion events—the gradual accumulation of surrounding material onto a celestial object—can still occur long after a star’s death, offering a rare window into the composition and fate of distant worlds.
