Bing Is No. 2 in Search, Yahoo Down, Google Next

Recommended Posts

Its miles away from google...

Of course it is, at the moment :)

This thread and article is about the fact that it overtook Yahoo! at one point this/last week. If you read the article I linked to, it reports on that and shows a screenshot :)

There are a few things which Bing needs to improve upon which Google has;

Why do I have to hover over an image to view details about it? With google, I search for a keyword in images, and at first glance I can see the dimensions and size of each image I'm looking at. With Bing, it takes a whole minute or so to hover over each image and see details. Not to mention the filters like Size/Layout are all hidden in the corner somewhere.

There's a setting in Bing Images which lets you set it to show details without hovering :) I've attached a screenshot to this post to show you how (it's not obvious :p). I hope that helps :)

You say there's a few things that Microsoft need to improve on in order to compete well with Google, but only mentioned that one; is there anything else? :)

I would love to switch my SE over to Bing, but in order to do that, they'd need an iBing that is on par with iGoogle. I've tried having different home pages, but iGoogle just wins. The results however are very good, and I'm liking a lot of the features.

Really? I get better results with Bing, so far. I've found everything I've needed and very quickly.

A lot of people say "I get better results with Google" but I don't always believe them because I know most people are just jumping on the bandwagon. I think people need to use Bing as their search engine constantly for at least a month before they decide. They can't just do a couple of searches and then decide which engine gives them better results.

The reverse is true too. You can't use it a couple of days and claim Bing gives you better results than Google. ;)

I use search a lot for my work and nothing has every given me as good of results as Google. I'm still testing Bing, though.

Exactly :) That's why I said "so far" in my response ;) I'm still testing it and thoroughly comparing it to Google and it's good to see you're still testing it too :)

I've tried it and it's surprising good. I think you will see Bing's fortune continue to rise. Google is still my #1 though, as I still get better results with it.

Too bad that's been/was a feature of Live Search for some time now...

Where exactly is that video search?

Oh my gosh, I've just tried using the 'Portugal' version and I see what you mean. That's ridiculous! I thought they were bad with the UK and other residents but to only include those 3 search types in the Portugese version is ridiculous!

Do you get all types of searches with Google in your area?

For the time being, it would be best to follow this link and use the 'Estados Unidos da Am?rica - Ingl?s' version. That will give you every feature and you'll really see how good Bing is (in the United States at least..:hmmm:m:). It may be a bit of a disadvantage to not use your own country's market, but it's all that can be done at the moment. I'm using a different country's market and I've had no problems with the location-based feature:):)

Fad.

Well it will be a fad if everyone looked at it like that. Why not try it out for a bit? So far, it works much better, for me, than Google ever has. Therefore, I really doubt it will be a fad for me.

Really? Are you in the US or the UK?

The Shopping, Comparison and Travel features seem to be a joke in the UK and shopping link sends you directly to ciao.co.uk!?!? (Which they seem to have acquired??)

The general search is just Live Search in my experience (comparing the indexes of a number of my sites they're identical as for Live (Google, Yahoo etc.. are considerably different in some cases)).

So, while I agree with this for a lot of new MS services, I'm not sure that Bing (especially in the UK) is ready for prime-time. Heck, the features they couldn't rebrand in time got dropped but no-doubt will reappear!

Bing in the UK is definitely not ready for prime-time and a Bing official said that on a demo; that's why it's still in 'Beta' :) You should still notice a difference in search results, but the US version, by far, gives the best results and has most of the new, innovative, features which you don't find in most, if not all of, the other versions.

I've tried the UK version, along with some other versions and I totally understand your view on that one. The 'Maps' link even re-directs to MultiMap, since they acquired that service. Bing Maps is just as good, if not better than MultiMap.

I know they plan on including more features in the UK version, as well as other versions, before removing the 'Beta' tag, but I really think it's ridiculous that they've not included a lot of the stuff yet; even something as little as the new 'Explore' sidebar - they still have the links above the search bar

So, whenever I compliment Bing, I'm talking exclusively about the 'United States (English)' version. Even though I find the UK version better than Google, it's no match for the US version of Bing. You should really try it out here :)

As for comparing, once you are on the 'United States (English)' version, try using this comparison tool? with the query "The Killers" and you'll see the advantages over Google :)

Nope, we don't have the video search.

Well, I know that Bing plan to stay in 'Beta', on the Portugese version, until they feel it has enough features to be better than the competition, but I really hope they include video searching. I don't see a reason why they can't. If they want to beat Google hands-down then they really need to start thinking about their international users more.

Well

If bing fixes its "RELEVANCE" part

and yea..some people use search engines for spellcheck

so

if Bing fixes its Relevance and "DID U MEAN" part

than i personally think that it will be the best search engine on eath

actually google has a loottttt of experience when it comes to "DID u mean" :p and relevance. They have collected alot of statistics...

anyway

time will tell...but im sure that its really so damn hard to beat google...almost impossible ,,, ALMOST.but Still anything can happen

I used Live Search before Bing, so naturally I switched... But I know quiet a few people who was using Google and have since switched to Bing recently, they love it and I couldn't agree more. It's faster, and the searches are much better than when I use to use Google.

YAY! Another thing Microsoft can use to control the internet, and the technology age! Let's all give the Monopoly even better results!

-.-.

// I uses Swagbucks. It's only logical for me to find what I need, AND get paid. (if that fails, I use Google :p)

Isn't being an Athiest just the same as being religious? They both agree they're right even if there was proof.

I agree MS have the monolopy, MSN; Live Search; bing; Windows ! The list goes on and on

Edit

You know I really thought that MS bought Google, out ?

But obviously not, even though more than half of the entire MS search goes to Google.

Atheism is classed as a religion, indeed. And sure, you could say we're religious when it comes to the evidence presented by the atheist community :). Atheism has more counter proof than any religion to date has proof. So... /win. (Sorry, don't troll me, dangit ;). IRC if you must ^.^)

I agree MS have the monolopy, youtube; google; bing; Windows ! The list goes on and on

What?

Google && YouTube != Microsoft

    • I can name 10x that on why not to switch.... It's funny outlook/office are going towards web app wrappers, and then MS is now preaching native apps again.... ugh can we just pick a lane and stay in it
    • Absolutely NOBODY has suggested such a conclusion. I am affirming the sober reality check that AV2's overall market adoption will take longer than AV1's adoption rate -- which, by the way, is the whole point of the article! While PCI-SIG is productive (on paper), other WGs have created all sorts of confusing progress plans that consumers have tuned-out of their improvements... HTML/W3C, USB, HDMI, BT, WIFI (ieee802.11) as a few other groups where spec naming conventions, split progress paths, overlapping ambitions... I'm not critiquing the AV specs group; I'm simply affirming that adoption for AV2 faces headwinds beyond the macroeconomics of it all.
