PlayStation 3 Slim/Price Cut set for TGS according to PSW

Recommended Posts

In the latest issue of PSW Magazine (PlayStation World) based in the UK there is a small article all-but confirming the PS3 Slim and with some new information about when it will be announced. The article reads:
"The PS3 Slim Packaging looks almost identical to the confirmed PSP Go, so it isn't a fake. Expect the smaller, lighter PS3 to be announced at the Tokyo Games Show in September, just in time for Xmas"

This year the Tokyo Games Show will be held from September 24 to September 27 in the Makuhari Messe, in Chiba, Japan. We hope that the PS3 Slim could be announced sightly before but as long as it get's announced i'm sure that a lot of 360, Wii and even a few PS3 users will be getting one.

Same magazine is saying the price cut will happen at TGS also - http://liveplaystation.webnode.com/news/ps...kyo-games-show/

If it has somewhat better specs than my 80GB, then I'll trade that in and get a slim. One thing I don't like about the PS3 is the size and shape, though I don't think the shape will change.

GameStop Management Expecting 'Meaningful' PS3 Price Cut, says Analyst

At this year's E3, a number of publishers expressed their disappointment (either privately or publicly) about the lack of any price drop on Sony's PlayStation 3. Activision Blizzard chief executive Bobby Kotick took it one step further recently, practically threatening to cut off support of the console because "it's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation." The rumors continue to swirl that Sony will finally act and drop the PS3's MSRP by $100 for August (in time for the launch of Madden) and now leading video game retailer GameStop is expecting a price drop too. According to Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia, who attended a meeting with GameStop executives, "Management believes that a meaningful PS3 cut is highly likely in the near-term. We continue to believe a $100 price cut on PS3 will occur around the launch of EA's Madden NFL 2010, which is scheduled for release on 8/18."

Furthermore, Bhatia now says that the probability of a price cut (likely $50) on Nintendo's Wii is going up. "Logically, if Sony cuts the price of PS3 to $299, Nintendo may be forced to cut to maintain sufficient price differential versus the PS3 and 360. In other words, hardware sales, while slow now, are about to get a boost in the near-term driven by price cuts," he noted.

At this point, IndustryGamers is all but certain that a price cut on PS3 is coming this year. Sony really has very little choice if they wish to stay competitive. We're slightly less convinced that Nintendo will drop price on Wii. Although sales have slowed in recent months, we think the upcoming Wii MotionPlus and Wii Sports Resort could stimulate further hardware sales. We'll be watching closely.

Great news :) although I'm happy with my 40Gb brick :p glad to see things are looking up in the land of Sony and I'll definitely be picking up a PSP Go (used to have PSP Phat but gave it away - the Go looks to be perfect for my needs!)

We are about due for both a slim and price cut. Will never trade my 60gb unit though.

I actually like the shape, it fits in so well with my black tv/monitor etc etc. Also the black is less obvious when using it in the dark as opposed to *Apple* white.

The idea of a price cut and a slimline version does sound good, but I do kind of worry about Sony's bottom line thanks to the price cut. After all, if they consistently lose money at the rate they are, surely this would effect the quality of the next console?

The slim and price cut are arriving on the premises of the comment at last years E3 of 45nm CELL will be ready for this summer.

A slim console with a 45nm chip will drastically reduce manufacturing costs.

Old (current) hardware will be drip fed to retail over this summer period to try and dry out as much stock as possible and by next year it will probably be near impossible to find a fat PS3 in retail if the Slim launches a good few months before this year finishes.

Totally expected after the leak and they really have to. Patcher actually made some sense. PSP Go helping by subsidizing with a high price.

PS3 $299

Xbox 360 60GB $299 - Likely price cut

Xbox 360 Arcade $199 - Maybe

Elite $399 but getting phased out apparently, keeps the price difference compared to the PS3 good when it's canned.

Wii $249 - Wii are easy to get but will Nintendo be really bothered if demand slows down a little.

Would also love for Sony/MS to include an HDMI cable with their standard $299 consoles (nothing fancy, just a nice $5 monoprice cable will do)
