PlayStation 3 Slim/Price Cut set for TGS according to PSW

Recommended Posts

I dont understand why people complain about the PS3 pricing. For $100 more than the 360 pro you get 20GB more, a Blu-Ray drive, and built in WiFi. How is that "way more expensive" even when Blu-Ray players alone are $150-$200

Maybe because not everyone wants a Blu-Ray player or the other extras.

Wi-Fi built in is nice, but for most people, they dont care about the rest.

I agree partly that not everyone wants those, but that doesn't make it expensive.

As mentioned for the difference you get - Wifi , 20 gig extra space, 'rechargable' controllers, seemingly future-proof Blu-ray player. Whilst it does push up the price, in terms of 'what you are getting' it's certainly not expensive.

Maybe in the US, in Europe I can get the Pro for 230? with a few games while the PS3 (with 1 game) goes for 400?. That's a big difference right there.

Possibly more evidence of a PS3 slim:

Ok guys, I'm getting bored of all the "rumours" and "debates" about the PS3 slim. Many people don't believe it is real, but I can confirm that it definitely IS real, however it hasn't been finished yet. Now I know what you're thinking - 1 post wonder, right? But I do have to protect my identity. Proxies, alternate emails, you name it, I am particularly paranoid about being found out because I could lose my job over it. However, I can at least prove my credibility somewhat - PS3 Firmware 2.8. Its being released on June 24th, that's next Wednesday.

So far, as far as I can tell, nobody has leaked anything about 2.8, including when it will be out. And for good reason, it doesn't contain any exciting new features, but don't be disappointed, more is due to come down the line.

So, at this point not a single one of you should put any credibility into this post. None at all. But next Wednesday if my "prediction" is correct, what then?

You tell me ;)

It'll be disappointing for some very specific reasons that the vast majority of people won't ever notice. Essentially, just about every non-essential component has been removed - like the switch on the back. And OtherOS support is gone as well, so no more cheap supercomputers, which as I said most people wont care about.

Also:

Firmware 3.0 will include voice chat. Across all games. With different people playing different games, old and new. That's the main party piece of 3.0. Private voice chat? You know it. Both in and out of game.

As mentioned and discussed on gaf other os support lacking screams fake. It's purely software based, you can't save money from removing it.

The guy did call 2.8 though, but getting one thing doesn't make him someone to believe on everything. Especially coming out of n4g.

We'll see.

Here's some more info:

It is real. It is a PS3 that's been cut down as much as physically possible without preventing the loss of playback of any existing PS3 title out there. It still has blu-ray, it still has wireless, it still has bluetooth and it still has gigabit ethernet. "OtherOS" support has been removed. You still get 2 USB ports. Hard drive sizes will be bigger, it will come in 120Gb and 250Gb flavours. It's still replaceable and will actually be slightly easier as it has been relocated to the front of the console. It will NOT have any "new" features, such as backwards compatibility or enhanced peripheral support. It's just a PS3, but slightly smaller and cheaper. The power supply is still internal, but a different power cable will be used. Rear ports are still the same: 1x HDMI, 1x Sony AV port, 1x Optical, 1x Ethernet. And of course a power port. Release date and official announcement are not final. Price is undetermined, but make no mistake, this is a "slimmed" PS3 in ever sense of the word. It's as cheap as can possibly be, so expect it to launch with a smaller price tag than what you're paying now in your respective territories.

Internally, several daughter boards have been removed, but all functionality is still there. This is due to a more advanced manufacturing process. It still uses a few extra boards, though, we're not quite at PSTwo levels yet. A Cheaper Blu-ray drive is being used. It wont be any slower, but expect to see similar issues that another competitor had a while ago. Touch-sensitive buttons on the front for power/eject are gone in favour of cheaper push buttons. It has a slightly different startup screen. Only slightly. It's about 50% smaller than current PS3s. It wont be called the "PS3 Slim". The PS1 "slim" and the PS2 "slim" were never officially called the "slim", either. In short: It's a smaller PS3, but that's it. No new features, no special hardware, just smaller and cheaper. And it wont have sex with you.

Cross-game chat is in the works as part of Firmware 3.0. It wont be out during the summer, but assuming all goes well, it will be out well before the holidays. Current timeframe places it around September, but it's still very much a WIP. If there are any major delays, that will slip and if there are very few delays at all, it might even arrive earlier, but don't bank on it as it is a lot more complicated than you might imagine. At this point, it's working quite well in the labs and supports several players at once. It's targeted to work with all past and future games that support ingame XMB, much like text chat. I'm not a betting man, but I wouldn't be surprised if the "slim" shipped with this firmware installed (that doesn't mean the slim will come first, remember).

Who said the 3000 wasn't being phased out? It will be and sooner than you realise. However, the PSP Go isn't what's replacing it. The 4000 is. And yes, it will have a UMD drive. And similar to the PS3 "slim", it's nothing to actually get excited about. Keep a very close eye on the hard drives shipped with newer PS3's. In a few months (or possibly sooner), something strange is going to start happening. There you have it, folks. That's it, I'm done, I'm outta here. If you have any more questions, you'll just have to wait like everyone else. This account is gone, never to be logged into again. You might see me in a few months time when I've got something even more awesome to tell you, but it wont be from this account and it probably wont even be on this site. Adios!

That's all coming from here - http://forums.n4g.com/Guess-what-PS3-Slim-...al-m657040.aspx

And there's already chat it could be a dupe account. (member name "Super_Secret", total posts - 19)

Eat rock salt before reading.

What he's saying is fairly reasonable, but there's no credibility behind the poster/site at all. Unless it's coming from the Ars Tech mole it could be a 14 year old making stuff up :p

"A Cheaper Blu-ray drive is being used. It wont be any slower, but expect to see similar issues that another competitor had a while ago."

Can someone explain...I remember hearing about problems with some Blu-ray players but I can't recall what they were off-hand.

As mentioned and discussed on gaf other os support lacking screams fake. It's purely software based, you can't save money from removing it.

That wouldn't be about saving money, necessarily, it'd be about streamlining the experience, memory management, etc.

can't wait

there probably going to have this priced higher than the unslim and lower the price of the original and then cycle through and lower the slim, then the ps4

The slim will be cheaper to make than the fat, it'll actually be better for Sony to sell them than the fat PS3. You'll see as earlier stated the fat stock levels drop over the summer, but keep your hats on, I'm not suggesting from selling out, just from retail not getting any/many new stock shipments.

Then the slim will launch, to replace it completely in retail probably by early next year or maybe even pre-xmas if the $100 price cut happens Q3/early Q4. Then you'll only find fats on ebay/second hand.

I can't remember how quickly the PS2 slim takeover took place in retail? I had a fat and never upgraded.

I wonder what kind of features Sony will strip out to make the slim.

I heard they're removing 360 BC this time around.

Wait, you guys didn't know? If you put the 360 DVD in upside down it plays the 360 games at half the frame rate and with 20% less resolution!

On a serious note, only rumour of removal so far is other operating system support (Linux), which seems unfounded as that's fully software based support, nothing hardware wise to remove to discontinue support. The source that rumour comes from says nothing else is being removed except internal nuts and bolts that don't affect us.

    • Ummmm that is what is it supposed to do. Just turn if off in settings if you do not want it analyzing your open tabs. Chrome does the same thing with Gemini. Sarfari will do the samething after Apple's AI and even more so with the release of their 27 versions that is now powered by Googles LLM/ML models. Understanding why it is doing it and how it can help you vs jumping to some conspiracy theroy is a much better approach. As long as it can be turned off, all is good. Yes the default should be off but the a lot of people would never discover these features.
    • Just another reason (aside from many others) not to use Edge. Firefox 153.0b5 DEx64 has a similar feature added recently in prior builds that I will turn off at some point when I get around to it. It's the new "Something looks suspicious" page that pops up here and there. It cleverly hides itself between web pages that I've actually visited; as a result, you know, of selecting a web page and telling the browser where to go. The interesting thing is that it does not produce these warnings from pages that I, as the only intelligent user of the browser in my system, have ever directed the browser to open! What seems to be happening is that the browser looks at all the goofy ad links on a web page I do actually open and selects one that "looks suspicious" and then creates the "something looks suspicious" web page, which is neatly inserted, as mentioned, between web pages my RB ("real brain") has directed the browser to load in a session. The thing is, I usually look at links I am considering to follow before I ask the browser to load them, and in cases I have noticed where the link does indeed look suspicious, most of the time I will choose to not follow the link at all. Doesn't everyone do this or something similar? I am picky about what I voluntarily load... (I don't like links that start off fine, with a site designaiton that seems normal enough but then is followed by indecipherable alphanumeric strings many, many lines long, etc. I tend to reject those because they look suspicious. They may not be, but I don't care... I'll stay with Firefox, of course, if for no other reason than they usually let you turn off the junk you don't like. And because it isn't Edge... But at some point Microsoft will come to realize that putting your bookmarks on the left side is a Good Thing for a lot of people, just as Microsoft discovered when it had the bright idea of nailing the Windows taskbar to the bottom of the screen, when for decades Microsoft browsers had left that placement up to the user. They have finally reversed the obscenity of that decision. Finally.
    • Google was using the old CATPCHAs data to train their LLMs. What is the say they won't use this camera data of users to train their LLM? these companies need some strict regulations!
    • Depends on what you need. Might be a bit clearer on what you plan to do with it. Sort of a waste if you get the newest and greatest, but don't know how to use it.
