[TGS] Gran Turismo 5: March 2010 in Japan

game definitely looks better then forza, mainly because the lighting is a lot better. Some angles the cars in forza look real, but then sometimes the lighting makes the cars look fake, like plasticy fake. Looks like GT isn't going to have this problem :)

This is a behind the scenes video the SLS AMG and Polyphony's studio

Other things about the video though, you get to see the GT5 model of the SLS AMG put together piece by piece. Polyphony currently has 140 employees. You also get to see a glimpse of the SLS AMG on the Nurburgring in GT5. Kaz also mentions that he's currently considering putting the SLS AMG on the cover of GT5.

Special edition boxart?

You're burying the lead, AB, notice that it's a 3-disc set.

It'll be some special edition that comes with extras. I think GT4 or GT3, one of them, had a special edition with extra discs filled with car content (not game car content, videos and stuff).

As you can see only one of the cases has the game logos

Gran Turismo 5 Spotted With Three Separate Blu-Ray Discs? No.

Edit: Guys, I will re-iterate what I posted in the comments section below:

The pic where Yamauchi is holding a GT5 package only shows ONE case being the actual game - the black one. You can clearly see the top case is a Gran Turismo 5 case. You can tell because you can see the Japanese CERO rating (like our American ESRB), and the transparent white PS3 case, with the new PS3 logo. And the bottom two look like instruction booklets, or car booklets that detail all of the cars featured in the game (this is something Polyphony has done many times in the past).

That's all it is. Three Blu-Rays this will NOT be. -- Arnold K.

The hotly anticipated simulation racer won't arrive in Japan until March and "not much later" in North America and Europe, but that doesn't mean we can't continue to salivate.

We all know about many of the appealing aspects of the game, but this news pertains to the packaging itself. Why? Because it appears that Polyphony will include not one, not two, but three Blu-Ray discs in the final Gran Turismo 5 package that will be on store shelves. According to a recent video featuring the new Mercedes SLS AMG, Kazunori Yamauchi is seen holding a GT5 box with three BD discs - one black, one red, one blue - clearly shown at one point. The only question is, what could they be? And why do we get the feeling that we're looking at a Collectors or Limited Edition, or something like that? Other information gleaned from the video tells us that Polyphony may consider putting the new Mercedes on the cover of the game, as Yamauchi says "it'll probably be the most exciting car in the world when GT5 releases." We also learn that GT5 "uses one single physics calculation model" so all the designers do is enter the parameters for each car, and everything plays out from there. Yamauchi said, "if the original car is made well, it'll drive well." Well, that's nice and everything, but what about those three discs...?

This isn't last generation and we're not talking about the Xbox 360. We're talking about Blu-Ray; we haven't yet needed multiple BD discs for any game, even though some titles - like MGS4 - have nearly filled the 50GB worth of space available on one disc. So the mystery continues...we imagine someone is going to ask Polyphony about it at some point, though, so stay tuned.

So it looks like it was just one disk and the others might have been like booklets and stuff. :)

After 5 years of making the game, I definitely expect them to give us another disc with like behind the scenes footage, making of the game and some bonus things like that.

I can't wait for this game. I hope they release some sort of collector edition, because I'm gonna be all over that.

New interview,

Disappointment for the "Gran Turismo (GT 5)" fans: The much-anticipated PS3 debut of the brilliant racing game series no longer appears in 2009. At a press conference held at the Tokyo Game Show GT-father Kaz Yamauchi announced the release date: march 2010 ? in Japan! When the game will appear in Germany, he left open. When visiting the developer Polyphony Digital studios in Tokyo, our news team got new infos about "GT 5" (there are over 950 vehicles, more than 20 places and over 70 track variations) and spoke to studio head Yamauchi on the date issue.COMPUTER BILD SPIELE (CBS): There are now almost 150 people working on "Gran Turismo 5" and yet the game is not finished, why?bKazunori Yamauchi:b> "GT 5" is difficult to develop.CBS: Why?bYamauchi:b> The dimensions of the game are huge, it is simply too great. It is so complex, so vast in its scale.CBS: Is "GT5" too ambicious? Are you too ambitious?bYamauchi:b> We must reach a certain standard. The benchmark for a "Gran Turismo" is now very high.CBS: Isn't there a great danger that the people who don't want to wait anymore go out and look for other racing games?bYamauchi:b> That may be true, but there is nothing that would let us develop the game faster. It's not like we're slowing down at the end. We do our best.I didn't have a single day of rest this year, but the game is still not finished.CBS: "Gran Turismo" is one of the most important games for the Playstation brand. Isn't Kaz Hirai (CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment) knocking on your front door every day with the request to finish the game? And finally, to sell more PS3 consoles?bYamauchi:b> He is not always here, but we really have pressure. And we do the whole thing not just for him, in my eyes it's more of a liability to the company Sony, which has encouraged me and helped me to this life.CBS: Is it true that you don't test other racing games and that you draw your inspiration solely from real racing?bYamauchi:b> Almost true, but our people will buy a lot of the newest racing games, try them out, and discuss the features and differences between our games. And as far as I know, it's usually so that the other developers take us as an example. So we get rather less inspiration from them for the creation of our games. I think the most important thing is to really drive the car and take part in races - so thats the way I refer a lot of inspiration.CBS: Why is it so important to accommodate a variety of online options in a modern racing game?bYamauchi:b> The original games were played simultaneously by a crowd of people, like soccer or baseball. And what is obviously happening here, is the communication between all of these people. Video games have only been there relatively recently and are a rather rare format in which one man plays the game for himself. I believe that the games with online connection, simply return to their original shape. You meet with your friends on a course and show your car, drive a time race and then come back to your friends for a little conversation - these are normal things that you would do in real life too, and so far this wasn't possible in "Gran Turismo ", but now it is. That makes a big difference. I think it is more about the natural progress of things, I would not even describe it as a great new feature.CBS: The damage model does not feel very realistic, why?bYamauchi:b> The main reason is probably that the game is still in development. What we are currently showing, is not the final product.CBS: We may expect realistic accidents?bYamauchi:b> It depends a bit on how far you go.I have seen real accidents, where cars were squeezed to 30cm (12 inches, my american friends) height, we can not go that far. But we want to make it as realistic as possible.CBS: And speaking of new features - as it looks, with weather and time of day?bYamauchi:b> If you look back at the history of racing games, there were different weather conditions, or day and night racing games in the eighties already. But when we released "Gran Turismo" in '97, we didn't care for such features, they did not bother us particularly. We are constantly experimenting with weather and lighting conditions, and such things. If we had to, we could integrate it into the game by tomorrow. But whether this feature is present or not is not the decisive factor. It's about whether this feature actually increases the overall quality of the game or whether it reduces it. And there lies the main part of our attention.CBS: So you don't want to tell whether these features are in the game or not?bYamauchi:b> We are experimenting with it. I want to stress again that the value of a game does not really depend on how many features are offered and what will be available in the final game. That does not decide whether a game is good or not. What we really focus on is the question of whether the game is good in its entirety or not. We have to proceed somewhat cautiously.CBS: If you were not into motorsport like you are now, what kind of games you would like to design?bYamauchi:b> Before the first "Gran Turismo", I had brought about a hundred proposals for a variety of video games, from adventures to puzzles to RPG games and from pretty much any genre. But if I had to choose one off of racing games ... Recently, I began to think that I would like to make a game that deals with the issue of life and death in the life of a man. Their meaning ...CBS: Why are the Polyphony Studios housing so many bicycles?bYamauchi:b> Well, everyone in the company loves bicycles.CBS: They're just standing around like that?bYamauchi:b> They are also riden. At the moment, there is a huge cycling-hype in Japan , road bikes and mountain bikes are very popular.CBS: Then we can expect a tour-de-France game from you?bYamauchi:b> Yes, that would be something that I would like to make and to have Lance Armstrong in here ...

If there's a special edition for this for us British folk then I'm going to get it for this game. Benn waiting for it for too long now!

Europe's the biggest market for GT, I'll lol if there isn't.

Might be the first proper special edition of a game I buy ever. I've only bought a tin case "special edition". Never spent stupid amounts of money like ?50+, but it's PD I'm sure they'll do something classy rather than a cheap toy.

SEMA show: More news on the much-anticipated Gran Turismo 5 video game

We met with Gran Turismo creator and godfather Kazunori Yamauchi at SEMA and asked him the usual phalanx of questions--most importantly, when the heck is the game coming out? We're dying here, man, dying!!!!!

When will you release GT5?

Yamauchi: We will release it in March in Japan but for other regions, it has not been decided yet.

What's holding it up?

That's more depending on SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) marketing decisions.

Have you spoken with those guys?

My job is to create the product, not sell it.

What's taking so long with the product, then?

From our perspective, it doesn't seem like that long a time. To make Gran Turismo 5, we threw away the legacy code from GT4 and started from scratch. It's been five years from [the release of] GT4, and that's the same amount of time it took to develop the first GT4. To create a game from scratch, that's the amount of time it takes to get it right.

You're at the SEMA show, what do you think?

Every time I come to SEMA, I can feel the passion of the car owners who bring their cars here. The SEMA show is different from what you see at a typical motor show. There is more passion here.

Will any SEMA cars ever be in GT5?

It is possible.

How many cars will be on GT5?

I have never actually counted all the cars. I don't have a policy to count them all. We are aiming for 1,000 cars in GT5.

Will those be on the disc when you buy the game or will we have to download them from other sources?

They will all be on the disc.

How do you chose which cars get in the game?

There will be three types: cars we want, the cars the users would like to see in the game and then cars the manufacturers want in it.

Have any manufacturers paid to put their cars in the game?

There have been cases where they've shown that interest [in paying to play], but I don't think we've ever shown interest in [accepting money to include certain cars].

Wouldn't that be a profitable venture for you?

A lot of times it develops into a relationship where we collaborate to raise the level of the game.

How many racetracks do you have in GT5?

There are 20 different environments and around 70 different track layouts.

Which tracks?

We haven't made any announcements. The demo [playing next to us in the interview room] is of Route 246, which runs through the middle of Tokyo.

That must be ripe for wrecking cars. Does GT5 include damage to the cars?

Yes, and the demo has it.

Is it difficult to include that feature?

It is not very hard, though it was not in previous Gran Turismos.

Is GT5 more for the advanced player or can beginners play too?

We do have a setting for people who are just learning how to drive. The other setting is very strict, where even an F1 driver can learn new tricks from the system. However, a lot of driver's aids will be included, such as driving lines, ABS, automatic braking, you can reverse your game and record your laps and share them with others. All those things. They were not that difficult to implement.

What other features will GT5 have?

There will be 400,000 polygons per car, 100 times more than were present on GT4. GT4 had 4,000 polygons per car. You can customize and tune the cars, too.

You have NASCAR and WRC in the game. Does this include the complete list of all tracks in those series?

The NASCAR series is so large it would be impossible to put everything in the game. We will have select courses and select cars in the game. You will also be able to race the stock cars on a number of tracks not found on the NASCAR calendar. In speaking with NASCAR, they said they'd like to see their cars able to race on other tracks, and you can do that [in GT5].

Will you have F1, ALMS or FIA GT?

We had a Ferrari F1 car in the game. For FIA GT and ALMS, we won't have that in the series yet. But we will have a lot of cars that race at Le Mans, so in that sense, there will be cars from ALMS.

Have you played Forza Motorsport 3?

I was watching the guys at our company trying it out in the office. I tried it a little bit. It's very similar in a lot of aspects to Gran Turismo. Some base components of the game are very different from Gran Turismo. It's a little bit different from what a simulator is. You can feel it when you drive it.

Will there be a Gran Turismo 6?

Yes. You won't have to wait as long as you did for GT5. GT5 represents a whole new operating system. GT6 is just new apps that run on the GT5 system.

Will there be downloadable content for GT5?

Eventually there will probably be but there are no actual plans set yet.

What did GT5 cost to make?

[He and translator do some figuring, converting yen to dollars] $60 million. There are other games that cost more. Considering the size and scale of the game, I think it's probably a fairly small amount.

Where do you see the future of gaming? Is it taking over movies, music and video as a form of entertainment?

I think that's already happened. It does take up a part of somebody's time in life. What's taking the most amount of time in people's lives is communication, like Facebook and things like this. I think that might take away from the time people spend on entertainment, whether it's movies or video games. A lot of basic instincts of human beings is starting to come out now [on sites such as Facebook]. Maybe human beings are just satisfied by continually communicating, not face to face but just communicating. The content they communicate doesn't seem to matter very much; it can be pretty much anything, even meaningless at times. There's a good possibility that even video games might be faded away.

But not right away?

Obviously not right away, but things change over time in every generation.

Domo arrigato

You're welcome.

$12 million a year isn't too bad actually for a AAA title. At $45 profit for each copy, GT5 will need to sell roughly 1.33 million copies. I completely expect GT5 to sell AT LEAST 2-3 million copies in it's first few months, and that's low-balling it. Could easily see 3-5 million in the first year considering how long we've been waiting for this game...

    • New PowerToys update fixes memory leaks and other issues by Taras Buria Another bug-fixing update is available for PowerToys version 0.100. After releasing version 0.100.1 with a bunch of bug fixes and patches, Microsoft pushed version 0.100.2 to address two important issues with one of Command Palette Dock's features. With PowerToys 0.100.2, Microsoft fixed the performance meter displaying incorrect values and memory leaks, which are particularly unwanted things in the current situation with overpriced PC hardware. Here is the changelog: Reverted a Performance Monitor dock refresh change that forced item refreshes on every metric update Fixed a memory leak in the Performance Monitor dock extension by reusing stable network upload/download band items instead of creating new list items on each refresh For those unfamiliar, Command Palette Dock is a relatively new addition to PowerToys. It is a taskbar-like tool that you can keep on top of the screen to pin various useful widgets, commands, and more. It can display time, weather, your PC's performance metrics, and more. Microsoft introduced the Command Palette Dock in March 2026 in PowerToys 0.98. Microsoft has dedicated documentation for Command Palette Dock, and you can check it out on the official Microsoft Learn website. You can update PowerToys to the latest version by going to Settings > General and clicking "Check for updates." Alternatively, you can download the installer from GitHub using this link. In other news, Microsoft is working on a new window-management utility for PowerToys. Called Alt Window Cycle, it will let you use the Alt + ` shortcut to switch between different windows in a single app. You can learn more about the tool here.
    • You did take leaf out of Trumps book already and had brexit - only to harm yourself. The same goes with this AI nonsense. The obvious solution for these companies is to move their head office to Brussels. I can see quite much irony there... 🙂
