''Burj Dubai'' The tallest building of the world

Recommended Posts

I think they were built to maintain the economy. "Tourism"

Yes that is the intention... 10 years ago it looked brilliant on paper, now not so much. There are many "predicted" outcomes based on economic conditions. The simplest is based on oil price (as that is where the money is coming from), this including other predictions currently put the "program" as a fail, I even read one article predicting they will run out of money before they finish their intentions - which is why they have gone the route of cheap buildings blinged up to make huge profit margins at the expense of quality.

no wonder Dubai is basically broke... restructuring the debt of the country just to make it look like its not.... the country went into a dumb building spree, pretty much to make it a resort place when their oil money dries up...

You can get arrested there for almost anything.

Not even remotely true. My father works and lives out there, and as long as you're not rowdy or a troublemaker, you barely even notice any such situations.

Just taking the extreme drug laws for example....

Keith Brown, 43, Middlesex: Four-year jail term for possession of 0.003g of cannabis (stuck to his shoe)

Robert Dalton, 25, Kent: On trial for alleged possession of 0.03g of cannabis

20-year-old, West Yorkshire: On trial for alleged possession of 0.02g of cannabis

Tracy Wilkinson, 45, West Sussex: Held in custody for eight weeks for possession of codeine before release

Swiss national: Four-year jail term after poppy seeds found on his clothes (bread roll)

Source: Fair Trials International

Admittedly generally you will be okay, but if you are one of the unlucky few people each year then you are in trouble. You get 4 years for any trace of an illegal substance, regardless how small. To put the above values into perspective a cigarette weighs a couple of grams.

This however shouldn't be cause for alarm if travelling as its so few cases, but at the same time its silly that they are so uncompromising on some ridiculous laws.

Of the above people, were they randomly arrested for these crimes, or were they hand in hand with other crimes?

Like I say, don't act like a lout and you are fine. I know people over there who hapilly smoke cannibis in their own appartments - but they don't shout about it.

What you cant buy poppy seeds there in the grocery store? that seems to go to far to try someone for a seed!

The thousands of Brits that go there every year seem to prove you wrong.

I've not even taken into account the Americans or other Europeans.

You haven't been paying attention for the last year or two then because their tourism has taken a big fat dump. Nobody is going there right now and that isn't likely to change for a long time.

This is the same thing America was doing when it built most of it's skyscrapers, and then they started spending all their money on war and now their economy is crap.

Yes, that perfectly sums up the American economy since the 1920's

    • Google pitches Spanner as one database for all AI agents with these new featues by Karthik Mudaliar Google Cloud is introducing new features within Spanner, its distributed database, as a place where enterprises should keep their data, using which AI agents could make smarter and better decisions. In a detailed blog post, Google highlighted quite a few features coming to Spanner, including relational data, graph relationships, vector search, key-value access, full-text search, and operational analytics together in one database architecture. Google says that today's systems aren't well-made for AI agents. There could be data that is present in one system, search indexes in another, embeddings in a vector database, and relationship data in a graph database. This fragmentation isn't great for AI agents to do their jobs because they don't have access to all of this data in one place. This is where Google is positioning Spanner as a solution. Spanner is already a globally distributed relational database with strong consistency, and Google wants its customers to see it as a broader data layer for AI applications. The company introduced something called Spanner Graph, along with integrated vector search, full-text search, a Cassandra-compatible key-value endpoint, and a columnar engine for analytical queries on operational data. Google also added that its ScaNN-powered vector search can support indexes with more than 10 billion vectors, while the columnar engine can make some analytical scans up to 200 times faster. All of this isn't just exclusive to the Google Cloud Platform, and there's support for multi-cloud as well. This comes via Spanner Omni, which Google says is a downloadable, containerized version of Spanner that can run on Kubernetes and in environments outside Google Cloud, including Microsoft Azure and AWS, and even on-premises infrastructure as well as edge deployments. Google says that customers who are interested in the full-featured edition should contact the company, and there's no word on commercial availability or separate pricing. Those interested can read the full blog by Google Cloud, which details these features individually.

    • They have lots of info on me, I have a facebook account and have done so for years, it was the thing to have then. My phone number is not on it. I don't have the Facebook app on my phone these days, just the messenger part, and only for a couple of people to contact me, most will text me via SMS or phone. I agree, Meta, like others, even without an account will know something about me. Just have to try and keep some things private Also, never saw the need for Whatsapp, people used to ask for me to join it, but as I said to them, I have SMS and a phone, use that, or email
