Bungie Set To Drop Halo: Reach Multiplayer 'Bomb'

March 2, 2010 - New Halo: Reach multiplayer details are expected to hit soon, according to developer Bungie. The team recently updated its developer blog bringing news that the first full campaign playtest results have been returned. Bungie creative director Marcus Lehto notes the game is scoring much higher than any of the previous titles at this stage in development. However, before signing off on his post, Lehto proclaimed a major multiplayer feature is set to be revealed as early as tomorrow. "On another note, I hope you all like the MP bomb we're about to drop on the world in about a day," he wrote. Just last week, the team teased that multiplayer designer Steve Cotten had been working on the "craziest things ever in a Halo game." Could this upcoming reveal be what Bungie was referring to?

The king of multiplayer games getting something even better? What could it be?

more than 16 players on map? :p

The original Bungie post http://www.nobleactual.com/post/421666073/our-first-full-campaign-playtest-results-came-back

I hope it is not something trivial (Bungie likes their hype...)

I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say that it could be some crazy range of weapons or maybe added gameplay modes? More players would be great though, 32? 64!?!?!?!? If the engine can do it why not?

Halo: Reach's big multiplayer bomb? A whole slew of multiplayer modes and, for the first time in the series, jetpacks.

Those feature in a new trailer, which is after the break.

The video shows off the new modes, like Spartans vs Elites, Invasions, Headhunter and more. Simply put: we want. And we want now.

The multiplayer beta is due to kick off on May 3, while the game itself launches this fall for 360.

The Halo: Reach multiplayer beta madness doesn't drop into Xbox LIVE until May 3rd, 2010, but you're gonna need to be up to speed before you get your boots in the mud. Check out the world premiere footage of the Reach's multiplayer Alpha in action and get a glimpse at what's on tap for the upcoming public Beta. You can take it for a test spin yourself in May using your copy of Halo 3: ODST to gain access.

In addition to the hot new footage, this trailer features a C Paul track originally orchestrated for the Halo 3: ODST Original Soundtrack. For the high energy remix, we brought in longtime friend of the studio, Ivan Ives, to help us make the musical magic happen. Here's what he had to say about the process:

"I'm really honored that Marty let me work on the remix of the Uphill, Both Ways track with C Paul. It was a great piece to begin with so we just wanted to put a different spin on it, which turned out really cool. Added in a really heavy dark bass and some lighter piano to contrast it and give it a really epic feeling to match the Multiplayer awesomesauce."

If you like what you hear, make sure you check out his web space. (Warning: Explicit and Awesome lyrics.)

Oh, and here's a sweet piece of Halo: Reach multiplayer concept art cooked up by our own Jaime Jones.

... and I'm done :p

Seriously this looks fantastic and I can't wait for the beta. I just hope it stays true to the Halo style formula and doesn't try copying COD with having to choose loadouts etc. Oh and there had better be a SWAT mode too :)

Dang....they just raised the bar. Reach might end up being the best Halo yet. Could it be GOTY?

It's GOTY for me anyway. Don't care about anything else. :p

Jetpacks!!!! Now you can rain down death from above! How sick is that? And from the video it looks like all out havok gameplay wise. I hope they can pack loads of players per map, 20+ so it's just a crazy firefight.

Um... are any other Halo fans somewhat put off? Jetpacks? Combat rolls? Honestly, this is starting to look like a Halo meets Tribes. Ugh... I'm not too happy. Oh well, the MP Beta should answer all my questions hopefully.

I think it's only going to be an armor ability and hence won't be any different than grav lift or man cannons. Combat rolls puzzled me as well but may be it is just part of standard animation. Elites been doing that since Halo1, no?

Eh, looks and play to much like Halo 3. I know I know, its an alpha build that looks nothing like the developer diaries.

Tribes, meh.

Well, you can't really tell until you play, but I imagine it will be similar to Halo3, but graphics and gameplay pushed much much farther.

Also, what do you mean it doesn't look like that "developer diaries"? You mean the developer video they released? It looks the exact same... because it is.

Anywho I think it looks fantastic. The more realistic and detailed artstyle is brilliant!

Yeah, but what benefit does it give in MP? Remember all the crap rolling caused in Gears? Tons and tons of glitches, exploits and hitbox issues.

    • This looks awesome, I will request access via Steam later this afternoon!
    • Personally, I’ve found that it’s usually worth investing in the infrastructure you don’t want to replace later, especially cabling. Running Cat6A (or better, depending on your needs) during an upgrade is relatively inexpensive compared to having to re-cable a few years down the road. For switches I try to balance current specs with realistic growth. If my budget allows it Ill choose switches with higher uplink speeds which leaves room for expanding later on, but I don’t necessarily overspend on access ports if the endpoints won’t benefit from them anytime soon. One lesson I’ve learned is that planning for scalability pays off. It’s much easier to add devices, VLANs, or higher-bandwidth workloads when your network infrastructure already supports it than to replace hardware later.  What is your budget like?
    • I hate the term, "future-proof." We saw it back in the 90's / 2000's, if not before. You cannot future-proof anything, since there is no definition of how far into the future you plan on prepping for. Best idea is to tell us what you currently have and what its use is at the moment, and we can then offer ideas about some areas that might need an upgrade and other areas that can be left alone.
    • I can agree that it is being used in a small capacity. I worked for a company where their engineers still used XP, and when asked why it was because their sensor software wasn't compatible with newer operating systems and the software was discontinued so they couldn't upgrade the software. Given that the sensors were still in use by companies, they had to continue using XP to support the sensor, otherwise the price to the company would have gone into the millions or billions. Our response was simple: Ok, you can keep the XP machine. But we're removing it from the network. "But then it can't access the Internet or folder shares!" Yup, kinda the point. If someone wants to continue using an unsecure OS they can do, I have no problem with that. But it should be isolated. Simple. I had a fight with a guy in the engineering department for weeks before he finally relented. But we digress.   What do I plan on doing to commemorate the anniversary? Nothing. I have fond memories of the OS, but at the end of the day it's just an OS. If I had some time I might see if I could install it on my Raspberry Pi for a laugh. But my reflex memory with today's OS ideas would probably get me frustrated and I'd uninstall it after 5 mins.
