I saw it in IMAX 3D. Really good movie. Not sure if i'll have time to see it again in the theater, but i'll definitely be purchasing it on blu-ray.

I'm not sure a lot of people will agree with me on this, but the only problem i had with the movie is that i wish it was longer. Or, this should have been 'Avatar: Part II', or a sequel.

There could have been so much more of a story that was told. Who are the Na'vi? How did humans find them? How did we get there? The Na'vi seem like such a fascinating race, they could have their own movie. Or i wanted to learn more about the main characters. The movie started and we're already on their planet with no back-story.

But...with the majority of today's "movie audience" the way it is, most wouldn't have liked it if it was slower, or added "too much" story. After all, Hollywood is out to just make money.

But anyway, awesome movie and it was definitely worth the money and time spent to see it. Recommended ;)

Prequel? :D

Maybe like Star Wars, start at the middle first then go back to the beginning? :)

For me, Titanic was a horrible movie, we all wanted to see the boat sink, not a boring love story

Hahahaha

quote of the year.

Going to see this tomorrow night as its my sons birthday, is it any good.

Some have said its visually great but the plot is as good as a soggy xmas turkey in the brazilian rain forest.

Avatar is a boring movie. The effects are beautiful, the rest sucks. I fell asleep.

The only good movie JC has done is Terminator 2.

I totally agree.

I saw this in 3D and didn't notice any effects. Nothing "came out of the screen" so to speak except for the beginning when they told us to put the glasses on...

It was a bad movie as well. Very boring, plot was highly predictable and it just rambled on and on. The sounds were amazing though.

If we put the blame on Uwe Boll for the direction of Titanic (lets face it, Titanic was THAT bad), then James Cameron has his grove back.

Titanic was not THAT bad... unless you went in expecting something completely different from what it was. Then, yes, I can see how you would consider it bad.

I hated Titanic that much too. It was beautifully done just as this film was, but both films' scripts sucked big fat hairy monkey balls IMO

Oddly enough, both films have their RT Rating at 83-84%. But I've never been one to really give a damn what the majority of people think, especially critics. If I cared what critics think, I'd seriously be limited with the films I watch and enjoy.

The trailer looks horrific for this movie. It looks like a rip off Atlantis (the animated movie). The story sounds droll and uninspired. Did they spend the $300 million just for special effects?!

Have you not read this thread? The majority in here agree that while the story isn't the most original, it's extremely well done and the special effects simply add to an already amazing film.

And it is nothing like Atlantis.

To each his own, but hating a movie and a movie being bad are very different. There are plenty of movies that I hate, but that I'll readily admit aren't bad movies, just ones that don't appeal to me despite being well constructed.

Too many people focus too much on the story mechanics and not on the storytelling itself. A simple story does not cripple a movie as long as it is able to rise above it, which Avatar does.

James Cameron has done a few staggering movies--Aliens, The Terminator, Terminator 2, True Lies and some really, really good ones--The Abyss (which I've not seen in a long time and need to see again) and Titanic. I dont know just yet where Avatar falls under, but I doubt there are many directors who could have turned a story like this into such an epic, massively entertainly movie.

Why are people still complaining about no originality anymore? Hollywood is turning out hundreds of movies every year. At some point in time, ideas will run out & scripts has to be recycled over again.

I think what would happen is borrow ideas from other movies to make a NEW one based on that (Cross over)

I always kinda want to make a Resident Evil-Star Wars-Transformers kind of movie myself ... putting them all in one package, but NO Not the RE crap from these RE movies, actually RE atomosphere from the GAMES with puzzles ... Scarier and Creepier! With acting more like James Cameron movies than the other crap. Maybe I will also add some Tomb Raider element to it too LOL

And there is a scene in Avatar, these monster-looking Dog creatures - very scary like those you see in Resident Evil! :

It's in this video -

Just watched it today. It's simply extraordinary. The CGI was stunning, the plot was compelling and the storytelling was appropriately paced. I also love the thematic implications of the various names used in the movie, particularly "Pandora": after the all the pains and sorrows, the last thing that emerges from it is "hope"! Brilliant references!

I just watched it last night. 6/10

I did not realize that movies should now be expected to not have a decent story line. There are several parallels with Atlantis in this movie. Even the plot twists are similar. I just am quite disappointed that for $300 million, they didn't manage to make a good epic story line. Lord of the Rings managed to be epic in storytelling and CGI with its huge budget but Avatar couldn't? That's just disappointing.

The plot was the dumbest EVER. It was as if I watched this movie a HUNDRED times before. Enjoyed the 3D thingy though

All in all 6/10, if not for the great picture i would've given it a 4 or a 3

oh and what's with the handicap?! that was just pointless. by looking at his legs and wishing that he could run like the avatar doesn't add anything to the storyline really.

I like that the plot is simple. When I go to see this kind of blockbusters I dont want deep chit, I just want something cheap and simple. At least it's not an epic mess like transformers 2. The movie still managed to have me on the edge of my seat because I didnt want them to take down that damn tree. And it made me hate that colonel SOB.

The thing that really put me off at first was the color palette. But it wasnt that bad as I thought it was going to be, they kept showing flesh people every one in a while so it was okay.

The first half was like pocahontas to me, and the second half was like.. return of the king, only that the orcs were good this time!

Hmmm, interesting.

ALL of them do?

A story at newyorker.com confirms that the Navi are modelled after Cameron himself who is left-handed.

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/10...a_fact_goodyear

Cameron inserts himself into every aspect of the filmmaking process. With the virtual camera, he is both cinematographer and camera operator, working in his favorite style, handheld, for what he calls ?an edgy, subjective quality.? The camera eliminates the need for cable cars, helicopters, or cranes, allowing him to shoot from any vantage point he chooses. ?When I say, ?Make me three to one,? what I?m saying is ?Make me eighteen feet tall,? ? he said. ?At that point, I?ve become a techno crane. If I say, ?Make me twenty to one,? I?m a helicopter.? The Na?vi, too, are an extension of Cameron. He mentioned that he is a lefty. ?Guess what,? he said. ?The Na?vi are all left-handed now.? He taught Zo? Saldana how to shoot her bow, as he envisioned it. ?It?s a two-fingered inverted draw past the head, like a Samurai,? he said, tracing the shape in the air over his left shoulder. ?The archery instructor came and said, ?Do you want me to teach them archery or do you want me to teach them this? This would never work.? I said, ?See that bush?? It was a hundred and fifty feet away. I nailed it.?

The Navi shooting technique is nothing like what the samurai used, Cameron should probably stick to fiction

3/5

but watch the movie (i'm going to watch it again) its got some of the best pictures you'll ever see in a long time... kinda like Matrix in 99

    • Started implementing weapons! Here's a little sneak peek! 👀 Animation was done inside of Unreal Engine using Control Rig! Really useful tool, I don't have to go back and forth between Blender and UE, you can basically make tweaks while the game is running.
    • Keep in mind Intuit has lobbied like crazy to keep taxes complicated so they can continue to sell tax software. They also got caught hiding their legally mandated free version so they could release a second one that pushed countless people into charges they didn't need to pay to file. Intuit leads the charge on inventing problems so they can sell you the solution and disrespecting you in the process.
    • Oddly, there was a time that UFC games were culturally relevant, largely because of the graphics and gameplay that was different than the norm. But it seems like as the sport grew in popularity, gaming outlets stopped talking about the games.
