do you get a free Subscription with no ads?

Hell no - lol.. I did my time (as a staff member) and subbed but i would again or i could just let the ads show. It benefits them eitherway. I don't get any perks from being a sub as i get perks as it is now :).

So does neowin get paid for showing the Ads, or people clicking on them?

Ads bring in revenue on views too, people think you have to click em... you don't.

I actually didn't know that. That's cool, though, and a very good thing. I think part of the issue is that, even among people who'd like to support a site, internet ads are no longer considered trustworthy - I really don't like to click on ads because so many of them fire away a nigh-endless string of pop-up windows and malware installation attempts if I do (I don't know if any of the ads shown here ever do that; I suspect not, but the prevailing distrust of clicking on ad banners still pervades most users, I think).

I'm glad to hear that viewing the ads helps - the ads aren't bothersome and I'd love to see Neowin keep going. I don't post much, but I've been a steady reader for 7+ years :)

Man, after reading the majority of the responses from people bitching, I've never would've thought there would be so many unappreciative people in this community.

To have something as so petty as a couple ads bring forth these types of responses is embarrassing. To those who said it as well as the community itself. Should be ashamed of yourselves, really.

If you must block them, by all means do so in silence. To knock something you really have no right to, is wrong. Even after all the fuss, these guys still went on and took away the facial graphic. They didn't have to! These guys do these types of things for us all the time and yet we turn on them for something so simple as a couple ads? Unappreciative, indeed.

I'm not going to sit here and debate on whom I'm calling unappreciative. Simply, if you feel the shoe fits, wear it.

So much progress could've been made today on the many other things they yet have to implement onto the site. I'm ashamed to see that sidetracked by something as petty and quite frankly, stupid as this. Very considerate on our part, don't you think? Pushing and pushing to the point where owners and devs have barked back. I don't condone name-calling, but I sure as hell understand why things were said as they were.

This thread is full of ugly. On all ends. I won't participate in it any longer. May we all get what is deserved.

The attitude of some of the staff in this thread is about as unprofessional as it gets :/ telling members to grow up, stop "being ######", ETC... it's kind of worrying, as members we would probably be warned for behaving like that.

While i haven't read all 20sum pages to agree with the first part i will say regardless of that, that that the 2nd part is how it goes pretty much anywhere. Something that would not be allowed for the users rarely applies to the people running the place.

Don't see what the problem is, it made me sign up, I like the community and think a bit of money going their way couldn't hurt. Don't need reasons really do we, its just putting money into "the internet" which we've all expected to be 100% free from day 1. A community needs to be looked after with so many different people, and I'd say the staff do a pretty good job on the whole - Neowin is still here, and the recent upgrade makes Neowin look like its had a lot more time and effort put into it than most sites.

It's their site, they can put that message up there if they like. It's not like they aren't offering a way to get rid of ads, and it costs very little for what you get back. I would rather Neowin got real money from members, than automatic money from ad clicks/views. Although money is money, I consider this different, as Neowin has provided me with something to do on the internet, and I genuinely wouldn't be "me" without Neowin :)

Rob has already confirmed we'll be making some improvements so that normal non-adblockers will not see the message no matter what their connection is. What's your problem here exactly?

Maybe that the condescending attitude of the "staff", before it was confirmed that it was an issue on your end, that the only people who see it block the ads. If any regular member had called even one person here a dick, let alone a good portion of the user base, or accused them of being a dick, the post would have already been modded and the user warned. Since the problem with the graphics not showing properly was on your side, I think those that were insulted by staff should be apologized to. I know it's not going to happen though.

It seems like it takes a lot of energy to fight to continue to be, well, a dick about this. I forgot I had a browser still set to block ads when I saw the graphic, so it was a good reminder. But you're saying that not only should they not tell you what you already know, you'll take further steps to block the block notice (which aren't ads now, so you can't scream "privacy issue!") just to assert your authority over your browser and this website, like some chest-thumping primate who just protected his mate.

You have a very crap attitude towards others.

There's ways we could implement to make the adverts unblockable if we really wanted to. There's also methods of making the "you blocked ads" message be there no matter what.

It's not accusing you off anything stop being paranoid.

No, but the "staff" are. Personally, I couldn't care less, but I can see why someone would question it. And for the record, I don't block ads on here either.

    • This makes me think of Dune for some reason.
    • I'm too old to return to the "good old days" when I was installing custom ROMs and tinkering with my devices - now I just want to turn it on and use it. I've read that banking and payment apps work on Murena /e/OS (I'll have to check the ones I use) and I also really want to support Fairphone 😉

    • NVIDIA announces 35 new AI HPC supercomputers across Europe by Fiza Ali NVIDIA has announced that 35 AI high-performance computing (HPC) supercomputers are planned to open throughout Europe this year. This marks what the company describes as the largest single-year expansion of AI infrastructure in the history of the continent. These new systems, unveiled at ISC High Performance 2026, will be placed at a number of national supercomputing centres, AI factories, and research institutes to provide advanced computing resources to more than three million researchers. Describing AI, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang stated, "AI is the new instrument of science, and Europe is building the infrastructure to put it in the hands of millions of researchers." Built on NVIDIA's Blackwell and Hopper architectures, the new systems will support research in climate science, healthcare, clean energy, quantum computing, and other scientific fields. Among the major projects are the Barcelona Supercomputing Center's MareNostrum 5 AI upgrade, BavariaAI's Blue Swan platform in Germany, Italy's IT4LIA AI factory, Germany's HammerHAI project, and Sweden's Mimer AI Factory. The Barcelona Supercomputing Center plans to expand MareNostrum 5 with NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 and GB200 NVL4 systems. In total, the BSC expects to deliver up to 20 exaflops of AI training performance and 33 exaflops of AI inference performance. This increased computational capability will support research efforts related to climate modelling, biotechnology, energy systems, etc. Furthermore, as part of the IT4LIA project, more than 8,000 GPUs, each based on NVIDIA’s GB200 NVL4 architecture, will be used in Italy. This represents one of the largest AI factory initiatives announced to date. Additionally, the Blue Swan platform from BavariaAI will include about 1,000 GPUs to help develop multimodal AI models for use in the medical field, robotics, and various areas of scientific research. NVIDIA also emphasized in the announcement how rapidly growth of accelerated computing usage is taking place within both energy and climate-related research. The company said Siemens Energy uses NVIDIA-powered technologies to significantly accelerate the process of designing and simulating hydrogen-capable gas turbines. Using those same acceleration technologies, Siemens was able to reduce simulation time by up to 77 percent. The company also highlighted several quantum computing initiatives across Europe. CINECA, EuroHPC, and Pasqal are integrating a quantum processing unit into Italy's CINECA supercomputing centre using NVIDIA's CUDA-Q platform. Meanwhile, researchers at Germany's Julich Supercomputing Centre recently simulated a universal 50-qubit quantum computer on the JUPITER supercomputer. The announcement demonstrates Europe's continued commitment to building out its infrastructure supporting AI and supercomputing as governments, research organizations, and technology companies compete to build out their respective computing capacities and secure their positions in advanced scientific research.
