World Cup 2010: South Africa ponders vuvuzela ban

Recommended Posts

The Vuvuzela has to be the single most annoying sound ever heard by the human ear. It is destroying the world cup. This is not a horn blowing party, its an international tournament of Football. The beautiful game is being destroyed by people blowing on these stupid horns, what the hell were the organisers thinking!? and its not like they didn't have any warning, did anyone watch the confederations cup (a.k.a World Cup Dry Run) it was exactly the damn same!

We complained about it then, and now people are outraged, you cant hear the crowd, the players cant hear each other, you struggle to hear any whistles, theres no atmosphere and its ruining the tournament.

Ban them immediately. Utterly ridiculous. SA should never ever in a million years have hosted this tournament, no infrastructure or stewardship to ensure a good tournament.

You fail to realize the blowing of those horns is the only entertainment they have .. they have no footie songs they can sing ..

Plus the FIFA knew about this many moons ago so blame them, If you happened to have watch the tourney that was happening a few months back which Brazil won...

You would have known the same happened ..

just show up with some guitars and amps, and rock them suckers out of the stadium... all's fair right? lol

Honestly, that is a very very very annoying sound. Like a huge bee in a hallway. I'd probably go insane if I had to hear that for more than a minute. Horrible.

I'm honestly not as annoyed as some of you in this thread.

It's football afterall all I care about is seeing the players play.

I can understand complains coming from the players or the spectators but being so annoyed sitting in front of your TV is just .. annoying.

(Y) Excatly.

I hear people who've actually been to the stadiums say they're OK.

That may be true. I know when i went to a cricket match there were quite a few horns in the crowd but i could mostly hear the people and crowd reactions but if i was watching on TV i would probably hearing the horns more.

BBC receives 545 vuvuzela complaints over World Cup

The BBC has received 545 complaints about the sound of vuvuzela horns during its World Cup coverage.

The corporation is considering showing coverage that cuts out the noise of vuvuzelas on its red button service.

On Monday, World Cup organisers ruled out a stadium ban on the plastic horns, which can reach 130 decibels, following complaints from players and fans.

Experts say it is impossible to cut out the horns without affecting commentary and crowd noise.

The BBC says it has already "taken steps to minimise the noise".

"If the vuvuzela continues to impact on audience enjoyment, we will look at what other options we can take to reduce the volume further," a spokeswoman said.

The BBC is considering cutting out some of the vuvuzela noise on the red button service but says a final decision has yet to be made.

On Monday, Trevor Cox, president of the Institute of Acoustics, told the BBC News website's Magazine that vuvuzelas were tuned to a similar frequency to speech tones.

If broadcasters tuned out it would dampen the commentators' voices, he said.

"It would sound really horrible to notch these out - if one coincides with the vowel sound e, you won't be able to hear the -es in the commentary. It would sound unnatural," he said.

Normally the World Cup is fun to watch, (since I don't watch Football/Soccer normally) this year it's not fun to watch because there's NO ATMOSPHERE.

Also if these horns are such a part of their culture why are they not allowed under any circumstances in Rugby in their same country?

Some people are such whining *******.

Just deal with it. That includes players, commentators and sissy ass fans.

+1, what I've been saying.

only 545 complaints is very low.

Agreed. 545 out of... oh, I don't know.. millions of viewers either on TV or online + tens of thousands spectators actually attending. Clearly not enough to do anything about it. Also, FIFA already said they weren't banning it.

This has to be the worst World Cup I have ever watched and all thanks to those horns.

It's like you are in a animal kingdom where there are no rules.. these guys got to host the Cup and now they are acting like retards blowing horns indefinitely during each game.

I have never ever seen this type of idiot behavior from fans. It's just not cool, it doesn't provide fun atmosphere at all but extremely annoying one.

I can't imagine how these players are even able to play the game with those things.

When you watch the game on TV, it's awful, I can't imagine how it is in the field.

Wow... really? lol Don't watch then, or mute it. No need to bash fans for being passionate and calling their behavior idiotic or retarded.

For you, click the little guy under the horn. Speakers up.

They are not real fans. Real fans know when it's enough and what's atmosphere and how to bring it.. when you blow a horn constantly like an idiot you are not a fan, you are letting off some steam and aggression thinking you are awesome when in fact you are killing the enjoyment for everyone else.

You're just still giddy your team drew with England aren't ya ;) lol

    • Thanks, Sony and Nintendo, you effectively killed platform-agnostic gaming. Long gone are the days when you could wish to play a specific game on whatever platform you were. Now, you have to buy the hardware just to play that single game. What, you're only interested in THAT game and nothing more? Bad luck, suck it and buy our console.
    • The AI data centers need it more than us so...let them gobble it all up at that price!
    • "CRAZIER than ever!" Crazy Taxi: World Tour is officially coming soon by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Sega announced it is working on bringing back some of its classic franchises in 2023, and while it has taken some time, the company finally gave fans a look at one of these new projects at the Xbox Games Showcase today, which turned out to be a brand-new Crazy Taxi entry. Watch the debut trailer above, which has snippets of gameplay in between the cinematic bits while blasting a track from The Offspring. Dubbed Crazy Taxi World Tour, this installment is aptly being described as being "CRAZIER than ever!" The director behind the original, Kenji Kanno, is helming this new entry as well, which will come with access to five new cities to drive in, competitive multiplayer modes, a vehicle customization system, and more. Axel is returning as a protagonist as well, but this time a mystery driver is offering him the opportunity to take his adventures to the streets in other countries. This will involve Axel chasing down masked villains that have somehow stolen his taxi, which means even more extreme missions and challenges to overcome. "From transporting passengers at top speed to tackling unique side missions and odd jobs across dynamic maps, there are countless ways to drive crazy and rake in big money," says Sega about this new installment after over 20 years. "Perform outrageous drifts, catch insane air, and drive at crazy speeds across five different cities as you work to deliver passengers and complete a variety of missions and challenges." The studio has even confirmed an in-game Arcade Mode that players will be able to access containing the original games for plenty of nostalgic action. Crazy Taxi: World Tour is currently slated to release sometime in 2027 across PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
    • This and Crazy Taxi are the two games that interested me the most from this showcase.
