Your new 360? Even better (Y)

yeah I can't hear it all.. it's possible that now my PC is louder than my 360.. it used to be the other way around  I don't have my old Elite anymore.. if you can recall I traded it in for the new one. (Y).

It depends on any other noise in the room I suppose? Sound tests have shown that the 360S when playing from DVD makes as much noise as the old ones did from idle at the dashboard, which is pretty quiet for a disc spinning at 12X. Anyone with a fast DVDRW drive in a PC that goes at the same speed should be able to tell right away. My PC DVD drive goes like crazy when I put a disc in, though I haven't really used it much (no real need to).

I can't wait to see how the sales numbers come in. The new design, plus the bigger HDD+built in wifi should draw in new first time 360 buyers for sure, those who have been holding off due to noise and so on.

thanks for confirming that DM, that's what i wanted to know. if the DVD drive is as quiet on the S as the hard drive is on the normal 360, then we're golden. however, from the videos online it seems the kerplunk whenever you open and close the tray is still there. BTW is there a way to disable the beeps? not a fan of audible feedback of that type.

When a DVD is spinning in the Xbox 360 S, it is not silent. You can hear it spinning FAST. The difference is, it doesn't sound like a jet because of the fans that the old 360 made additional noise with. It's not WHISPER silent when a DVD is spinning.

I have installed 15 games from the retail disk to my HDD and run them from the HDD. I don't install my less frequently played games. Doing this makes your 360 whisper silent 24x7.

I hope that person knows your 360 is broke! If so, sounds like a great plan stan.

So, out of all these people that voted they are getting an Xbox 360 S, which ones have NOW, or when do you plan to get it?

I got mine! I will have a review up shortly at ActiveXbox.com and will post a link here.

I'll be getting mine from GAME on the 16th July(European release date), and trading in my wii.

Price is ?199.99 right now, but some other retailers are selling it cheaper, so hopefully Game might reduce their prices......but I doubt it.

Want it for the quieter fans, and hard drive.

Looks nicer 'in person', but I am not a fan of that excessive use of gloss, big reason I wanted rid of my fat PS3 for a Slim. Collected dust/dirt like a mofo, and scratch marks show up very clearly.

Videos definitely show it looks a million times better in person, still haven't seen it myself though. Not sure why they went with the gloss decision but it is probably a marketing ploy. People see how amazing it looks (in pristine condition) in the store and find out at home how much they attract dirt even though most won't return it at that point.

I have a 2.5 year old PS3 fat with no scratches, and remains dusted and clean like new.

Occasional moving around of consoles and wear and tear/cleaning over 5-10 years.

Regardless, what I do doesn't really matter, gloss does show up scratches pretty easily however they get there, that's all I said.

This looks cool, and the built in wi-fi is a great feature IMO. I really like the specs of this console, and of course the improvements in cooling and sound are definitely pluses too.

I would definitely get this if it supported Blu-ray... I know Microsoft chose HD-DVD, but it's now lost to Blu-Ray, and there's really no excuse for not supporting it at this point. If this had been included I'd be upgrading definitely. It's a shame really, as I don't want to have all of these electronics around my tv. There's really no need anymore for that...

just look a few posts above.. I even put proof.

Really wth you do to your ps3 and 360 that you get scratches anyway. I have both sitting nicely under the TV for last 4 years and not even a scratch on them.

I can't speak from experience on owning a glossy console like the fat PS3 but not everybody keeps their console in an entertainment center for years on end. I routinely take my console home when I visit family or take it with me to a friend's house. I like the matte look because it can handle rougher use if need be.

It would be interesting, though I doubt this would happen, but maybe the newer "arcade" version that will show up later this year for $199 won't be glossy? Might as well make some more obv distinction between that and others so people know it's a lower end arcade unit. Up till now you could just see that it doesn't have a HDD on top and that the DVD tray is white and not silver, but with the new S design, ya, should be interesting.

btw I haven't preordered yet but I will be getting after 9th for local gamestop.

They mean hairline scratches caused by dust when cleaning. Not deep scratches.

Yeah I meant this.

However Noise > Power Consumption > Looks in that order for me. Unless it's something genuinely hideous like my Halo 360.

I am however unimpressed this still comes with a power brick. I just hate those things.

Microsoft is focusing on digital downloads versus HD optical disks.

Sorry, I forgot about that...though I did see it. Nice!

Microsoft is focusing on digital downloads versus HD optical disks.

I don't think so really...at least not enough to drop optical any time soon. I think the next console will have Blu Ray and it's just too late in the game to bother adding the drive now.

The focus has always been on the console being the cornerstone of the media center so for that they will need an optical drive going forward for the foreseeable future. One day that requirement will drop but not yet. Thats not to mention the bandwidth issues and possible market rejection of a download only console (look at the PSP). I know it worked for the iPhone but that has a very different model ($0.99 impulse buys basically).

Anyway I'm grabbing one July 1st when it hits Australian stores.

The next console from MS will most likely have digital cards, similar to say DS. A form of SD card with higher storage. The reason MS is focused on Games on Demand for Xbox 360 titles, they see this as a way to be able to play the previous Xbox 360 library of games on the next console without the need to have a DVD drive.

It's unlikely they will go the Blu-ray route, as optical is now pretty dated.

    • Payday TWO!! Is 13 years old man I feel old - I remember trying it out and if I did not know I would say 5-6 years ago or something
    • Payday 2 engine upgrade adds 64-bit and DX11 support, drastically shrinks install size by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Payday 2, the most popular entry in the heisting game franchise, is getting a surprising update after all these years. This is slated to be a complete engine upgrade that will enhance almost every aspect of the 13-year-old title, targeting performance, loading times, file size, rendering backend, and more. Developer Sidetrack Games is planning a beta to test out the new version ahead of the full public launch. The development team today revealed that the long-awaited upgrade to the 64-bit architecture is happening with this Diesel 3.0 engine update. By letting the game use more ram than 4GB, it is said to improve stability and compatibility on most hardware. It should also help modders in the long term with implementing larger changes too. "While many of the changes are made on the backend and not everything will be visible to you guys because it is a massive rewrite of the entire codebase, there will be a lot of things that you can look forward to," Sidetrack explained. Payday 2 will also hop over from DirectX 9 to 11. Instead of visual improvements, this is slated to reduce the amount of VRAM used by the title, letting more lower-end hardware access the title and run it better. Since these changes would require a complete redownload of the game anyway, Sidetrack says it has revamped "the game's packaging and bundling system." This should reduce the installation size from 86GB to 32GB. "So, now it's time to finally move the game to your SSDs," added the studio. The Payday 2 Diesel Engine 3.0 update is entering open beta on June 30 for Steam users. No console release plans were announced today. Sidetrack Games says it has been working on this complete rewrite of the codebase for the last nine months. While these changes should break most mods, the studio encouraged modders to use the beta period to repair their creations with support from the development team.
