Hi all!

Just noticed that posts can now be repped down as well as up. Is this an official change of stance from Neowin management about how rep is issued?

Last I knew it negative rep wasn't going to be used (I forgot the reason).

Feel free to comment, fellow Neowinians. Good or bad move?

It has been enabled for Staff & MVC's only ;)

When a person is derailing a post or is being warned, staff will have the ability to negative vote the offending post.

This ensures (over time) that we don't have members on 80% warn with a load of positive rep points.

PS: We are going to trial it, and see how it goes too..

I just noticed it too. I was searching the forums to see if there was an announcement. I think it's a good thing, but as Neobond has said, it could be abused. I hope it isn't though.

Exactly - we'll see how it works out.

I actually like the idea of keeping it for mods/mvcs only tbh.

Agreed. I wouldn't give it to anybody else, not even subscribers. It's just too easy for people to abuse it when emotions run high (which they often do in the GH for instance).

EDIT: Typo

Yeah, I would have to agree with that. It's just too easy to abuse the feature.

Not so sure this is a good idea. Something like this needs to be closely monitored.

Well the idea is, that when a poster is warned for a post (or not, just derailing a thread) then the karma reflects this as well as the actual warning.

Does it make anymore sense that a bad poster who is constantly being warned has a positive rep of over a hundred?

It could potentially lower the number of warnings for minor infractions.

Read the details, only Staff and MVC's have the ability to make use of this feature. So it doesn't need to be monitored, in theory. shiftyninja.gif

Karma? What the hell?

I think that the concept of "popularity" is being mixed with "reputation".

The inicial approach was all about popularity and now it's all about "reputation"... and this reputation is set by people that often don't act properly?

Thats your opinion, not that I agree with it; plus it became a true karma tool when negative voting was enabled ;)

When you go into a thread and post a respectable post you still might get a negative rep which is B.S.Just because you don't agree doesn't make it wrong. If the majority see one thing one way and you don't you'll likely get a negative point rather than no points. I can see it happening to me all the time.

See this thread to better understand its purpose: https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/919032-omg-i-got-a-negative-vote-what-for/ seeing as this thread didn't do the trick.

    • Microsoft's new Xbox Shutdown change promises massive power efficiency gains by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Microsoft has been delivering a lot of changes for Xbox Insiders to test in recent weeks, and today, another wave of changes aimed at consoles was announced. The latest drop is testing features that let users find mutual friends easier, customize their UI, and streamline wishlisting. When looking at an Xbox friend's profile, an option will appear to see mutual friends, perhaps to get a refresher on how you know that person. This will depend on the privacy settings. The same applies to when checking the profile of a person who is not in the friends list, offering a quick way to find out if this is a known connection. Next, Microsoft is giving the option to change how the 'Home' and 'Games & Apps' sections show off available games. There is a new poster style that users can enable for an "immersive library experience." "We’ve also made personalization settings easier to navigate and customize by separating Home and My Games & apps into separate sections," adds the company. "And to make personalization even more accessible, we’ve added new shortcuts throughout menus, so you can quickly jump in and tailor your XBOX experience the way you want." Moreover, heading to the store page of an unreleased game will now offer players the option to wishlist directly from the game card. Lastly, Microsoft is making a change to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles that are in Sleep mode, making them use the more energy-saving 'Shutdown' mode instead automatically. The company says this can increase power savings by up to 20 times without impacting "performance, gameplay, or your ability to receive system, games or apps updates overnight." The only down side seems to be a longer startup time that can take up to 45 seconds. The setting was originally introduced in 2023, and this is only the latest update to it. The power option can be changed from the console settings at any time. This Xbox Insider update is rolling out today to select members of the program. As usual, Microsoft aims to bring it to more Insiders over time before they reach all Xbox owners. Head here to find out how to join the Xbox Insider Program to get a chance to test these features and upcoming ones on both consoles and PC.
    • 2 was a fun game but felt a bit shallow, like not enough there. I hope this expansion fixes that.
