Mac OS X Lion Discussion

Recommended Posts

So, if I were to get the Lion DP through alternative means, hypothetically, I wouldn't be able to upgrade to DP2 or 3... right? (Just wana check out Chrome)

DP2 is already on the interwebz. DP3 is an update through Software Update. It worked just fine on my Hackintosh.

How did you manage that? Refurbished model + student discount?

Nah it's not new, I found it on Kijiji this morning :)

It's in GREAT condition, no scratches or anything. The only thing that was bothering me was the power cord had black marks from a power surge or something. Bought the macbook and took it right away to the apple store and they replaced the cord for free :D

Ohh nice, if it's still the latest gen then that's a really good deal. Congrats. :D

^ What he said.

I?m thinking we won?t have a developer preview 3 before they show all the new stuff at WWDC 2011. I?m really expecting for more new stuff than what it has right now (better security, free MobileMe accounts to all Mac users, MobileMe integration, File Vault / Dropbox-like feature included in MobileMe, Resolution independence, better gaming support and features - I?m talking about the very latest OpenGL stuff supported and demonstrated and maybe an OS feature to give more resources to the games - like killing a few processes when the game starts and relaunching them when it quits -, I can always hope for a new iTunes, something going on with Front Row, blu-ray support, etc.).

At best we can expect for an update that fixes bugs, to help developers develop on Lion with less pain than right now.

The DP "2.5" doesn't work well at all on my iMac. It's generally sluggish, crash-prone and suffers from very long boot times. And as much as it's the developers responsibility to fix, the Chrome/Chromium crashes and failure to quit still annoys the heck out of me. The colour picker in Fireworks doesn't work either... Oh, and the hotkey for CloudApp.

It annoys me simply because it works perfectly on my MBP!

Maybe I'm being stupid but i have Snow Leopard and I have an "App Store" button in my Apple Menu, what is new about this?

That was added in the 10.6.6 update with the App Store to replace the old button that directed you to Apple's website.

It's pre-release software. If these issues annoy you to this degree you should simply stick with Mac OS X Snow Leopard or some other stable release. What else is there to say really...

Obviously? I knew what I installed, and I expected nothing more from it. However, I said that "it annoys me simply because it works perfectly on my MBP." In other words, it's a pity it didn't work as well on my iMac, since it works perfectly on the Book. Now, I think that's quite logical, whether it's pre-release or not.

So what's so new about the App Store that makes them advertise it in Lion's feature list?

Why not advertise things like iTunes in this case?

Because it's actually a Lion feature but was released earlier to prepare developers and give it a little time to become accepted among the community.

Apple Seeds New Version of Mac OS X Lion (11A444d) to Developers

Apple has seeded a new update to Mac OS X Lion to developers. The new version is build 11A444d. No word yet on any new features that are found in the latest release. The update can be found in Mac OS X Lion's Software Update control pane.

Apple will be launching Mac OS X Lion to customers this summer. We will likely hear more details about it during this year's WWDC held in June. Apple's website gives an overview of several of the publicly announced features coming to Mac OS X Lion.

Development is picking up fast which makes me wonder whether firstly the aim is to get builds out monthly up till it is released (to help developers test wares quickly) and secondly that maybe lion won't be release till after wwdc thus pushing shipment date out to the end of summer.

A few notes :

post-17580-0-97325700-1298573857.png

- They have annihilated this slider where we can select the icon view, list view, etc.

- OpenGL 3's support is still faaaaaar from complete.

- iCal hasn't changed since last build. Still ugly IMO. It may not look like bloody diarrhea anymore, but it looks like vomitted pea soup.

- Windows-that-appear-or-disappear animations are still inconsistent. Safari and Preview are the ones that have it best, most apps don't have them, some apps have other animations...

- Mission Control : still strange to me, and I've tried it with just a few applications. I'm also missing a quick way to access my Desktop, featured in Mission control.

- LaunchPad... my favorite one. It hasn't changed. Same problems again and again. It's hard to figure out how to remove applications, it'll be harder to figure out how to actually delete them from your hard drive, and holding an icon makes them shake for no reason at all. The icons to go to the next and previous page and too small, I would prefer the same icon they're using in Dashboard to show the next page of widgets.

Also, Nidoking, I still see the classic Downloads window, how did you do?

Other than that, they have fixed a few bugs, it seems like they have stabilized a lot of the features we have all seen so far since Jobs' keynote, except of course Mission Control and LaunchPad. There's just LaunchPad that still doesn't make any sense. I'm actually scared by this one. It's so simple to do, yet they have failed for the fourth consecutive release.

So far, it confirms what I said. "At best until WWDC we can expect a new release, and at WWDC we should expect many more features demonstrated that will show up in Lion".

In regards to the Launchpad:

Didn't I answer the shaking thing from another post in a post a few pages back.. On my iPhone when icons shake, you can re-arrange the items. Or if it's an installed app it should have a X to delete the app (an app downloaded from app store?). I haven't installed Lion on m machine, but looks VERY nice. The UI has VERY subtle changes, and these changes make the UI look more smoother, and I like it :D.
