Mac OS X Lion Discussion

Recommended Posts

LOL looking at things purely rational I just did something stupid for the very first time... I upgraded my primary install (Macintosh HD) to Mac OS X Lion. Let's see how that goes the next couple of days... Ahum... So far the only thing that completely ****es me off is the lack of Graphite in Appearances. I really hate Blue.

Eh, okay... Has anyone noticed how Front Row is completely gone in Mac OS X Lion?? Hopefully not permanent...

Apparently you can change the wallpaper for each space using Mission Control, but how?

Drag the System Preference window with Desktop & Screen Saver selected to whatever Space and then change the desktop picture. It will only change your desktop picture for that particular Space. It's both a blessing and a curse.

(Sorry for the three posts in a row btw :) )

PS Does anyone know what preference I have to trash to reset my Graphite / Blue appearance setting?

The fact that the drop-down menu is still there but not currently active seems to imply Graphite will come back, it just wasn't enabled for this build.

Okay, that's a bit non-intuitive, don't you think? I've found that Lion does have some neat new functionality but it's currently not documented or hidden in such a way that it just feels awkward to enable.

It's very well done, but Launchpad seems a bit juddery. Also windows inside fullscreen apps doesn't work well, Safari opened a download box, I clicked off it and it disappeared into the abyss. Odd...

I'm just waiting for Aperture and Word to get fullscreen support. :D

It looks good but it looks a lot like iOS from what I see in these screenshots above. They don't have a very creative department in OS design.

Someone mentioned there's a swipe gesture to get mission control - what is it?

Also am I missing something or are you unable to right click on dock items. I can't empty my trash!

I believe swiping all the way to the right enables Mission Control, but I'm not sure on that. Either way, Mission Control appears quite buggy in this developer preview, so I wouldn't expect too much of it to be working at all.

As for the Dock context menus, definitely a bug. None of the System Preferences shortcuts work at all. I've already submitted a bug report to Apple regarding this.

System preferences shortcuts don't work for me, unless System preferences is actually open. I can however empty the recycle bin by right clicking, and every other application seems to work with the right click.

Some work and some don't. Regardless, the Dock is still quite buggy, but it's to be expected.

I found some issues today trying to use my MacBook Pro with my 30" Monitor. When I plug it in the monitor won't work unless I have my MacBook Pro screen on as-well. On Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard you were able to turn the Notebook screen off and use just an external display. I am unable to do this now.

Another issue I had was programs appear to crash whenever Expanding or Mirroring to an external display. Not all apps crash but a few including Movist (which I use to view video) and Chromes Flash plugin wouldn't show any Video but instead gave me a transparent view to other program windows below chrome. Just to expand on this point, the programs don't crash during the connecting of an external display, they crash after the external display is connected and won't work at all. In the case of Movist it will continue to crash straight after launching unless the External display is unplugged.

So some definite hardware compatibility problems right now. In light of these I've now gone back to Snow Leopard but I hope to try Lion again at release it shows a lot of promise.

Four finger pinch in will show Launchpad

Four finger swipe up will show Mission Control

Four finger swipe left/right will scroll Dashboard (left of desktop) < - > Desktop < - > full screen apps

Pretty cool once you get used to it.

Apple must think we are from Vulcan with those four finger pinches. I found it very uncomfortable to perform that on the track pad.

    • Well again I do not mind seeing it charge my stuff if it does it well. "yeah charge my phone like that, charge it good"

With features like HTTPS Everywhere and built-in tracker blocking, Brave keeps your online activities safe from prying eyes. Brave is one of the safest browsers on the market today.
