[Official] CR-48 ChromeOS Laptop Shipment-Tracking

Recommended Posts

One already in my city, about 2 miles from me, and another on the way with an ETA of 12/15 in the zip next to me, about 1 mile away

how do you know how far from you these laptops are being delivered?

I called up UPS to check on one that's coming to Linden NJ and the dude on the other end wouldn't tell me the address. He wanted me to tell him the address and he would either say yes or no.

Just knowing how far away the zip codes are, not actual addresses

Well, turns out I am not getting either being shipped to my town. UPS was more then helpful when I called. laugh.gif

For anyone trying, all I said was "Hello, I have 2 tracking numbers for packages coming to my town, and I would just like to confirm if they are coming to my address or not, that is all I need to find out." So I gave them my address, and they confirmed that indeed neither package was for me.

Oh well, turns out 2 lucky people in my town are getting theirs.

It took me like 5 tries to call for UPS and get an agent because that option wasn't possible until I finally said agent.

Not sure it is a great idea.

I mean, there are rich client apps and web apps.

Web apps are meant to run everywhere, or will quickly lose ground against web apps which des not lock down users.

Lockdown is easy for rich client apps, but very very difficult for web apps, it is a fact.

So we will have traditional PCs that will be capable of running both rich client apps (with an huge lockdown potential) AND web apps.

On the other side we will have this new concept of personal only capable (or strongly geared to) run only the second kind of apps.

What is the advantage in not being capable to run the first "half" of apps, the one with greater locking potential?

Till now I've only heared about "If you are going to use mainly mail and FB this is the best solution for you"... ok, but nothing prevents me of doing the same thing on a classic PC.

The degree of difficulty, instability and insecurity of PCs, as well as price and power requirements of hardware fallen dramatically in last decade, so it is not an huge advantage to have a thin client style web based system now.

In any of the two case, an hardware fault will block you.

In both cases a network fault will prevent you for using any web based apps.

So, it sums up to not be a critical advantage, for people relying totally on web based apps, against classical PC, and an HUGE miss for any other one...

HP88, you are falling into the same mental trap that a lot of posters here on Neowin are stuck in, thinking that everyone wants or needs a full-featured PC for their daily tasks. There are a LOT of people out there (probably many more than you imagine) who still won't buy a PC because they are "too complicated", yet want something simple to use for internet access. That is the market that internet appliances tried to tap a few years ago, but failed for various reasons (mainly due to high cost and poor implementation).

It took me like 5 tries to call for UPS and get an agent because that option wasn't possible until I finally said agent.

I just pressed 0 right away when they gave the options, which is basically just a little trick, even if they do not say 0 (zero), which they do not here, usually 75% of the time the way to get an agent is press 0 for Operator, so I got an agent within 10 seconds if that.

I've actually memorized the AT&T voice prompts, and I can do a very good imitation of them.

"I see you're calling from... xxx...xxx...xxxx. Is this the number on your AT&T account?"

"Yes"

"Okay, please tell me in a few words the purpose of your call. You can say things like 'U-verse tech support' or 'I have a question about my bill'"

etc

I don't think the zero trick works, but I do know that there is a special number you can dial and, if you press two, talk directly with tier 2 support. Sadly I forgot that number.

But anyways... hopefully we get another batch of numbers today. It would stink if they suddenly stopped shipping O.O

Any news about more netbooks going out? Out of the first 3 batches, 2 came to my zip but not to me.

I'm wondering the same thing. The tracker site still shows that none were shipped yesterday or today. Very odd.

i have a feeling they are gonna stop shipments until the 21st

What gives you that idea? They started shipments immediately after they started accepting applications, and they are taking applications until the 21st. What possible reason would they have for holding off the remaining shipments? All that would do is create a nightmare for their shipping department.

There are two in my zip. One was delivered on the 12/10/2010. I ordered mine on 12/10/2010, and it shows one out for delivery for today...mmmm

Good luck! I'm really hoping that they did in fact ship some yesterday, but that they just aren't showing up in the tracker for some reason.

I hope one will come to myself, as I expect nothing else for this holiday as a gift.

My last laptop I had died due to a faulty GPU and it was two weeks out of warranty (go figure). It'd be nice to get a Chromium OS Notebook though I won't be surprised if I don't get one.

This is killing me. The first and only package going to my zip so far is out for delivery at the moment. I can't help myself and keep refreshing the tracking page, hoping for some news. Either let it show up here or let it be delivered quickly so I can stop watching the page!

    • Does anyone here know if these updates are integrated into the UUP dump isos?

    • NVIDIA officially supports Ubuntu, as linked above with the GeForce NOW Hands on I did in collaboration with Paul Hill.
    • TO be clear I am not running linux today, however I keep thinking about it. And I want to make sure there are minimal obstacles if I decide to make that switch in the coming months.
    • Yes, I actually glossed over the Linux part from the OP. You could always go for a 9070 XT and if you really want to play Ray Traced games in the future, GeForce Now is pretty damn good on Linux https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidias-native-geforce-now-app-for-linux-bridges-the-gaming-gap-hands-on/
