Geohot releases the PS3 keys [Discussion]

The only plus for Sony is PS3 sales will boom, and if they find a way to ban consoles, people will be buying multiple.

Devs will be pretty worried.

Homebrew can't exist without piracy, just the way it is unfortunately.

considering the 360 is still around and it's been hacked for years, I don't think this will really change anything for the PS3 devs. I wouldn't be surprised to see them buffer in extra game data to inflate game sizes. While HDDs are large these days, I'd imagine your average pirate will be concerned if games are clocking in at over 10-15 GBs.

Hopefully Sony sues Geohot so deep into the ground he won't have the money to buy food and has to beg on the street.

Sue him for what?

Also easy to read spreadsheet of keys: https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AmWh9I5NKgNddE5NcnlxdHk3Nm9IYVR3djItTE9FT3c

Hes a sellout. his release came with a job application to any of the 'big three' so he's NOT on the 'side' hes portrayed in his PS3 and iPhone hacks...

I believe he figured this out months ago though, cause 3.21oo wouldn't have been possible otherwise - but that never came to light either.

As far as I know, "3.21oo" was just a modified vsh shell or something. I'm not sure of the details, but someone described it as just a modified text file that wasn't signed or anything and didn't actually do much. Probably why he never released it.

So I assume (without reading up) these key allows people to burn fully playable blurays of the games without modifying the console at all?

Burn them? It'll let someone repackage a game and allow people to just put it on a hard drive or a DVD (if it was small enough to fit). But piracy isn't really all that interesting, the "good" thing is the free software that's now possible. For example, theoretically, it should be possible to enable DTS playback from things OTHER than BD-ROMs. I know I'd love that.

The 360 was hacked purely for piracy yeah and it never stopped developers. But Microsoft has tried their hardest to at least keep pirates off of live. Massive bannings (like the big 2009 1million+ console bans) put many people off, although a lot still do pirate. One of the hackers said a few months ago that Sony isn't as capable of detecting and banning "modified" PS3's, especially since they don't control the software running on the PS3 itself any more (whereas with Microsoft, they were always in control of that, it was just the DVD drives that were hacked). Then again, we'll see what the future holds.

As for hard drive size, you can get 3TB HDDs for less than the cost of a KINECT. I doubt that'll be an issue for anyone.

That's been enabled for quite a while now! How do you not know that? :p

It has? I'm still having trouble with certain MKVs that have a DTS track inside them.

Well you need to use PS3MediaServer or MKV2VOB, but I've never had an issue with any DTS actually playing.

I use PS3 Media server. It's not all DTS files, it's just certain ones, I can't narrow it down. I just have to remux the file to Dolby 5.1 to play it.

All this would be solved if someone ports XMBC!

weeeeell... that's not entirely true now is it. It can if the console maker releases tools for the average basement coder to download and code for the console and release for said console for a very small amount... ;)

I do primarily agree with you, but look at the 360 - it has XNA, which is exactly what you describe, but Microsoft has such control over it, there's no "homebrew" scene really. Not legitimately, anyway.

That's not homebrew, homebrew is free.

Then what do you call all the indie devs, heck they even did theyr own ad campaing for the winter just now. or rather they're still doing.

I call them independent developers?

which is pretty much what homebrew is. they're pretty much interchangeable. except for the fact that homebrew is usually used when people actually means Emulators and pirating, since being an indie developer actually means you develop something new.

In the discussion we have just now, not really, but your opinion of what XBIG is, is noted.

I'd say the terms are both very similar but not the same.

"Homebrew" is, according to wikipedia at least, any kind of software that's written for a device or platform which is normally proprietary and not normally user-programmable. That doesn't say anything about it necessarily being "free", just that the software has been written for it without the official tools or processes.

That sounds about right to me. I'm sure there's a "homebrew" PSP game out there that you have to buy, I just can't remember the name of it.

And indie-developer doesn't necessarily write "homebrew". Look at Braid, or world of Goo. They're both considered indie games, yet have appeared on the Xbox 360 and the Wii, quite legitimately. So I wouldn't necessarily call either title homebrew, but I would call them indie.

It just so happens that you don't often find non-indie developers (i.e. large software houses) writing homebrew code.

I wonder what this will mean for PS3 BC in the PS4? Will Sony dare to bring back a PS3 mode that could, theoretically, bring a backdoor to the PS4 mode?

Also, PS2 BC is in the works for all PS3 models now it seems. Can't find the source but it has been said somewhere.

This is exactly right and now Sony has a reason to start charging everyone for the use of PSN. Microsoft charges for XBL so periodically they scan their network, find hack systems and ban the console and the account. That is a double whammy and seems to have curbed (Not eliminated) piracy for Microsoft and will generate extra revenue. Many people play Multiplayer so this is feasible.

Everything rides on the release of the "downgrade" code from an undisclosed source, without that particular code they (failoverflow) would still be "hacking" in the dark...

(and the random number "4" off course)

So it all boils down to human error... Who released the code that made downgrade possible...(some shady repair-shop, or disgruntled Sony employee?)

Well, time for new console hardware!!!

I vote for more (video) RAM in the next Playstation (HD gaming requires more RAM for textures!! plain and simple)

If Sony writes a good enough hypervisor, that wont be an issue. The PS3 had PS2 backwards compatibility and that contributed absolutely nothing towards it getting hacked.

Keep it free and ban PSN accounts along with PS3s.

MS' biggest downfall in the fight against piracy is not banning Live accounts, but they don't do that because they charge and don't want to lose money.

Just because some people are going to start pirating doesn't mean everyone using a PS3 has to suffer.

wonder what Sony is going to do next(probably nothing)... pirated PS3 games will soon show up in the internet.

lol i had to check and see if this was a year old thread revived. Ps3 games have been on the net for quite a while now. I might switch to ps3 since most ps3 games are smaller then 360

    • State of Decay 3 is out in 2027, reveals Plague Nests with new co-op gameplay trailer by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe A few months ago, Undead Labs broke its silence about the third entry in the State of Decay series since its announcement in 2020. Today, the studio had a brand-new trailer to reveal at the Xbox Games Showcase, finally giving players a look at the Unreal Engine 5-powered title. A broad 2027 release window is now attached to State of Decay 3 too. The studio confirmed that every scene seen in the gameplay trailer (except for the studio logo) released today is from the game with no cinematic footage. "The quality bar of the moment-to-moment experience is higher than anything we’ve achieved in Undead Labs’ history," says the studio. "State of Decay 3 is being built in Unreal Engine 5, and we’re creating better quality versions of what makes our game the survival sandbox it is, and the combat experience is really, really important to us, and I think you can see it coming through in this trailer." One new aspect of this upcoming entry is the Plague Nests. These are supposed to be dynamic, dungeon‑like enemy hubs with varied “personas” that change tactics each time one appears on a map. These areas will have the best loot in the game for players brave enough to tackle them. The combat system is being overhauled too, letting players do quick and power attacks depending on the situation. This isn't just on the player's side though, as zombies themselves now have multiple new types of behaviors depending on how fresh or decayed they are. "All of these play very differently, especially as you start getting outnumbered or when you’re making noise and running around and trying to save your rear end or the rear end of your friend next to you," adds the developer. Of course, settlement building and community management are massive parts of this third entry too. These are being further expanded with the cooperative focus, giving players much more freedom for playing together than in State of Decay 2. Players will even be able to split up and build settlements in different areas of the same map with different goals. Undead Labs confirmed that playtests are already ongoing for the title, and interested players can sign up to participate by heading over here once more slots open up ahead of the full release. State of Decay 3 is coming out on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Game Pass sometime in 2027.
    • Doom: The Dark Ages Revelations expansion gives the Slayer a brutal Chain Spear by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Last year, id Software released Doom: The Dark Ages as a prequel to its reboot series, offering a look at the legendary Slayer character during an ancient war between Hell and Heaven. Today, at the Xbox Games Showcase, id Software returned with a new announcement that unveiled Doom: The Dark Ages Revelations as its first story expansion. The expansion will see the Slayer being betrayed and cast into a "merciless purgatory only escapable by confronting haunting truths." Somehow, there is one ally in all this chaos seemingly attempting to help our protagonist escape his fate. Players will be ascending this prison and fighting plenty of new demons and abominations as they work to free the Slayer's followers. One new aspect of the expansion will be the Chain Spear. This new weapon is described by the studio as a "uniquely satisfying combat system that rewards mastery with a potent combination of power and mobility." Check out the trailer below to see the new weapon in action, where the Slayer is seen using it to even pin enemies to walls. id Software is also preparing a free update to all owners of Doom: The Dark Ages that will land alongside the new paid expansion. Dubbed the Ripatorium 3.0 update, this will add more customization options, an improved pass code generation system, and preset options for players diving into the game's arena challenge mode. Expansion buyers will also receive additional maps, demons, and new weapons to use in this mode in addition to the story levels. Doom: The Dark Ages Revelations expansion is out on July 7 across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 with a $19.99 price tag. Those who own the Premium Edition or the Collector's Bundle will receive the expansion for no extra cost as well.
    • Hyped for this. Replayed the remasters recently and they're so well done, and Crash 4 was great too. I trust this team to deliver.
    • Ninja Theory's new Hellblade game is action-focused and set in Purgatory by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Ninja Thery has been building its award-winning Hellblade series since 2017, delivering Senua's Sacrifice and Senua's Saga since then. Today at the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, the studio had a brand-new installment announcement featuring Senua again, but this time, she is in a version of purgatory, and the focus is on the action. Simply named Senua, this new entry is described as a "full-on action-adventure" experience, delivering an expanded focus on combat, puzzle-solving, and freedom of exploration. The developer says that it is keeping the same high production values and storytelling features of the previous games while giving what players have been asking for in the gameplay department. The entirety of Ninja Theory is now working on Senua, giving the project much more manpower than ever before, while also letting the team draw on its action roots from Devil May Cry and prior titles. However, the studio also confirmed that its previously announced Project Mara horror experience is no longer in development. Alongside snappier traversal moves, Senua will be able to take stealth and direct combat routes. She has access to her own sword, plus any enemy weapons as well, with dual wielding also being an option for most dropped melee swords, axes, and other weapons. Outside of melee combat, Senua will be able to use special abilities that let her alter the reality around her. The world is said to be about twice the size of Hellblade 2. While this won't be an open-world experience, the linear story will let players explore their surroundings further than before. The story of Senua will be set after the events of previous Hellblade titles, with our protagonist being stuck in her own version of Purgatory. The series' well-explored psychosis themes will return as well. "She’s trapped between life and death on a quest to reach the afterlife and be reunited with the ones that she’s loved and lost," adds the studio. "Her belief is that by healing the wounds of her life, she can find the peace that is the key that unlocks the gate to the afterlife." Senua is releasing on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5 sometime in 2027.
