Looks like tools to sign and create 'custom' firmware are working properly now. Starting to get real interesting.

Didn't sony removed the OtherOS support AFTER geohot claimed to found a hack/bug (or something) in it?

(slightly offtopic: I still don't get why anyone would use the OtherOS, for linux you could get a cheap(er) computer that would be better fit to run linux. As for media files, you could just stream them...

Personally I would love for my PS3 to play most media files without needing to stream. That is one thing I loved about my modded original Xbox.

Means users could create and sign their own packages for installation on non-modded PS3s. Modded firmware can also be installed.

The CELL is a pretty powerful chip, A PS3 running Linux can outperform desktops running Linux under certain workloads (the US Army have/had a cluster of PS3s as a proof of concept of a low cost, high performance setup)

It's similar to people building a cluster out of cheap PC parts, but sticking multiple high end GFX cards in each node, the CPU doesn't do much work since it's all offloaded to the specialised processor.

Incase anyone doesn't know, the first CFW has been released enabling homebrew (but not piracy) without the need for a dongle. BUT all the current homebrew apps need to be resigned with the Sony key to work.

(And theres a 3.55 or 3.41 version, but you can compile it for any version!)

Linux on the PS3 is only really usefull fopr people who run it in clusters to do large computations, of the kind the cell "likes".

For everyday use however, it's useless. too little ram to make real use of the CPU in a practical sense outside of pure number crunching. and if we include the OtherOS limitations (whic would no longer apply with this hack) it becomes even more useless.

PC owners to ISPs, my GB usage is Linux ISOs on torrents!

PS3 owners, bringing back Linux makes my PS3 worthwhile again!

No it doesn't, because the DTS portions have been converted to Dolby digital. The ps3 is playing Dolby files, not DTS.

Then it's not remuxing, but transcoding.

No, the slim removed OtherOS first, THEN Geohot did his hack (which wasn't very easy to do, didn't work half the time and in no way enabled piracy at all) and so Sony removed OtherOS support in the "fat" PS3's. I mean, it's debatable if Sony was always intending on removing OtherOS support, but Geohot definitely made them play that card.

Here's the timeline -

A randomer on some forum posts about the PS3 Slim before any official announcement was made (and while many people weren't even sure if it existed). This was in June 2009 and part of what he posted was that OtherOS was removed. The thread is here - http://forums.n4g.com/Guess-what-PS3-Slim-is-real-m657040.aspx

His findings were later found out to be absolutely true and the slim was released later that year without OtherOS support.

Next, at the end of 2009 Geohot announced that he was going to hack the PS3 and in January 2010, announced his hack. I can't link to his blog as it has been made private now, but the wiki page details it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Hotz#Hacking_the_PlayStation_3

Actually, I bet you have used Linux and just not realised it. It really is everywhere, there's probably been a cash machine or information point or even a phone that you've used which is running linux (Android is linux).

Most cash machiens actually run on ancient versions of windows embedded or sometimes win2k.

For me to truly be convinced to install a cfw I need to fulfill these requirements, otherwise its not worth my while and the risk.

It has to not be at risk from any kind of account lock or banning, got too much stuff on PSN that I don't want to be at risk.

Region free Blu-Ray+DVD playback

Improved codec support

Until then I'll pass.

That wont ever happen. There's always a risk. If you're worried about that, get a second PS3.

I doubt they would do that, they could affect a LOT of users who sold their old PS3's (to get a slim, for example). But it's all just speculation, they might do nothing, they might do it all, who knows?

The news continues to flow in today, this time around coming from GeoHot. He updated his site today with a very innocent looking line, "I made a video". However, what that video contains will change the face of PS3 forever. He demonstrates what many of you have been waiting for, jailbreaking / homebrew on a 3.55 console.

He achieves this by first enabling the install PKG feature with Lv2diag.self. He then signs his own (NPDRM) SELF file and packaging it into a retail PKG (with no signature). He then patches a file on the flash (NAS Plugin) so that it ignores the PKG's signature. The patch allows the homebrew to install, which then can be run from the XMB. Congratulations GeoHot!

There are no download links yet for these tools, but we hope to see them sometime this week.

Note this still does not allow piracy, but it does allow homebrew on 3.55.
