Bethesda Softworks: Prey 2 delayed but not cancelled

For the past few weeks, there have been lots of Internet rumors that stated that Prey 2, the upcoming sci-fi first-person shooter sequel from developer Human Head Studios and publisher Bethesda Softworks, had been cancelled. There has been a lack of information about the game for the past several months and Bethesda has not commented about the cancellation rumors when asked by the media.

Today Bethesda Softworks sent out a brief note to the media which had both good and bad news. Here it is in full:

Development of Prey 2 has not been cancelled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned. The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans. We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.

We emailed Bethesda to ask if Human Head was still developing Prey 2 but the company told us that the above statement is all that they are saying at the moment about the game's progress.

You can check out our impressions of a live game demo of Prey 2 at QuakeCon 2011 on Neowin.
