Canadian smartphone maker, BlackBerry has revealed that it will be acquiring U.S-based security firm, Good Technology, in a deal worth $425 million in cash.
BlackBerry Limited has been struggling with its devices for quite some time but its mobile device management software and services are still very popular among corporate and government customers. To further improve its offerings, the company has decided to acquire Good Technology, a firm that specializes in mobile security.
Good Technology's product portfolio boasts of an enterprise mobile management (EMM) suite used by almost half of all Fortune 100 companies, device specific applications for corporate customers and various other mobile security services. BlackBerry aims to seamlessly integrate these with its own products to "provide customers with increased choice for securely deploying any leading operating system in their organization."
BlackBerry has been working closely with Samsung to improve the Korean manufacturer's own secure mobile platform, KNOX, and the latest acquisition could result in more such deals with other smartphone-makers, as the Canadian company strengthens its foothold in the area of mobile security with Good Technology's products. The deal is expected to close by the end of the third financial quarter of 2016 after being approved by regulators.
