Data centres for sale

THREE Exodus Communications data centres in Sydney and Melbourne may soon be up for sale.

They are not included in a new $US575 million ($1.1 billion) offer from Cable&Wireless for the failed company's global assets.

The future of the three local data centres - a newly built facility at North Ryde, Sydney, and two acquired from Global Crossing, one in Pyrmont, Sydney, the other in South Melbourne - has not been disclosed by Exodus, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US, on September 26.

But these are expected to be sold soon - as going concerns - to a data centre operator.

The new agreement with Cable &Wireless includes Exodus businesses in the US, Japan and Europe, the customer contracts, employees, intellectual property and Exodus brand name, and most of its physical assets.

In addition, C&W has agreed to assume liabilities of $US180 million as part of the deal.

Cable&Wireless has no presence in Australia after selling its subsidiary, Optus, to SingTel.
