Epic Games is acquiring Fall Guys developer Mediatonic

Mediatonic, the studio behind the recent hit battle royale platformer Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, is being acquired by Epic Games. This is the second big acquisition by the Unreal Engine and Fortnite maker of an indie hit-toting studio. In 2019, Epic Games picked up the Rocket League Studio Psyonix.

“It’s no secret that Epic is invested in building the metaverse and Tonic Games shares this goal," said Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeny in a statement. "As Epic works to build this virtual future, we need great creative talent who know how to build powerful games, content and experiences."

According to the announcement, Fall Guys' gameplay will remain as it is going forward and platform plans aren't changing either, with Xbox and Nintendo Switch players gaining the game later this year to join the PC and PlayStation communities.

"Beyond the shared vision among our teams, we see tremendous potential in combining forces with Epic," added Tonic Games Group CEO Paul Croft. "Whether it’s about making our own games the best they can be or empowering other game developers to take their content from a kernel of an idea to commercial success, we know that together we will be able to reach greater heights."

In a separate blog post on Mediatonic's website, the developer went into a little more detail on what's happening with Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout following this move. The Steam version will remain purchasable according to the studio. However, it's unclear if this will change later much like what occurred with Rocket League, which hopped over to the Epic Games Store last year following a similar statement early on.

Mediatonic also wants to bring over features from Fortnite and Rocket League such as "account systems, cross-play, squad vs squad modes" and others. The studio had nothing to share on whether the game will go free-to-play much like other Epic Games titles.
