While several popular AI assistants like Microsoft 365 Copilot, ChatGPT, and others have been able to generate documents directly from chat for quite a while now, Google’s Gemini has been lacking this critical feature. This forced Gemini users to copy, paste, and manually reformat Gemini outputs in other apps.
To solve this issue, Google today announced that Gemini can now generate downloadable files directly from a chat. The company highlighted that Gemini can generate popular formats including Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PDFs, Markdown, Google Docs, Slides, and more.
You can now ask Gemini to create Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, and more directly in your chat. No more copying, pasting, or reformatting, just prompt and download.

Here is the complete list of file formats that are supported on Gemini:
- Documents: Google Docs, Google Slides, Microsoft Word (.docx), PDF, Plain Text (TXT), Rich Text Format (RTF)
- Spreadsheets: Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel (.xlsx), CSV
- Technical and developer formats: LaTeX and Markdown (MD)
Here is how users can use this feature:
- Users can enter a prompt, such as “Create a proposal document” or “Draft a project WBS tasks,” and Gemini will generate the content in the chat.
- Once the response is available, users can tap the export option to download the file to their device or save it to Google Drive.
- Users can also post images of handwritten notes and ask Gemini to convert them into a PDF file.
Google mentioned that this feature is rolling out globally to all Gemini app users. It will be available to Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts who are signed into the Gemini app. These new export capabilities make Gemini a much more formidable alternative in the AI productivity space.
