Back in January this year, in the lead-up to CES, Google announced it was putting its Gemini AI into more products, including Google TV. Now, the Mountain View giant is finally starting to roll out Gemini to the platform.
Google claims the new AI can do everything that Google Assistant could, but better. The main improvement is its ability to handle "free-flowing conversations" instead of just simple commands. You can still use the same "Hey Google" catchphrase or press the microphone button on your remote to get started, but the interactions are designed to be more natural. You can also ask follow-up questions without having to start over each time.
Some of the example prompts Google provided seem quite useful. For example, in situations like one where you do not remember the exact name of a show, you can just describe what it is about, like "What's the new hospital drama everyone's talking about?", and the LLM chatbot will figure it out. Google also claims the AI can give you a recap of a series like Outlander if you have fallen behind.
For now, the feature is only available on the TCL QM9K series. But the company promises it will come to more devices later this year. Those future devices include more TCL models like the QM7K, QM8K, and X11K. It will also arrive on the 2025 Hisense U7, U8, and UX models, the Walmart onn. 4K Pro, and the Google TV Streamer.
On a related note, Microsoft and Samsung recently announced a partnership to bring Copilot to Samsung's TVs. Just like with Gemini on Google TV, you press a microphone button on the remote to summon Copilot and ask it questions.
Some of the things it is capable of include providing spoiler-free recaps of shows, finding very specific movie recommendations, and answering follow-up questions about things like voice actors. This AI is available on the 2025 Samsung TV models, which cover the Micro RGB, Neo QLED, OLED, The Frame Pro, and The Frame.
