Google brings Oreo update to Android Wear

It looks like Google has now introduced an update for its wearable OS, Android Wear. Today, the firm announced Android Oreo, which gives the OS some important features and improvements.

Despite it being launched during the summer, Android 8.0 Oreo has been rolling out at a snail's pace, being found on only 0.3% of current devices. Regardless, it appears that Google is rolling out an official update to Android Wear, giving manufacturers the ability to take advantage of more features.

The news comes from Hoi Lam, who works on the Android Wear team, and while the Android Oreo update is available, that doesn't mean it will be arriving to your wearable anytime soon. The post also stated that the update's arrival will be determined by the manufacturers themselves, kind of how the updates work for Android handsets.

As far as improvements, the new update will offer:

  • Notification vibration strength setting
  • Touch lock option for wet conditions
  • Support for 7 new countries / languages
  • Plus more e.g. notification channels, battery saving background limits

It is nice that the firm is offering updates for its Android Wear OS, but we will see how quickly manufacturers are able to make use and implement this update in real-world products.
