Lenovo unveils ThinkReality A3 smartglasses with Snapdragon XR1

Today, Lenovo introduced its ThinkReality A3 smartglasses, which is based on its ThinkReality augmented reality platform. The new smartglasses include Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR1 chipset, which is designed for mixed reality, and has stereoscopic 1080p displays. The A3 sits beside the ThinkReality A6 in the lineup; that device was introduced in 2019 and has a Snapdragon 845.

“The A3 is a next-generation augmented reality solution – light, powerful and versatile. The smart glasses are part of a comprehensive integrated digital solution from Lenovo that includes the advanced AR device, ThinkReality software, and Motorola mobile phones. Whether working in virtual spaces or supporting remote assistance, the ThinkReality A3 enhances workers’ abilities to do more wherever they are,” said Jon Pershke, Lenovo Vice President of Strategy and Emerging Business, Intelligent Device Group.

The ThinkReality A3 does need to be tethered to either a PC or a Motorola smartphone with a Snapdragon 8-series chipset. The PC edition is for virtual monitors, of which there can be up to five. This will actually let you run Windows on a full monitor, run apps, and so on. It's essentially using the headset as a monitor but with the compute happening in the PC.

Then there's the Industrial Edition, which is what's made to be used with Motorola smartphones. This is made for AR use cases in work environments, and it uses the ThinkReality platform. This can be used for 3D visualization, modeling, and so on.

The ThinkReality A3 is coming to select markets in mid-2021. You can find out more here.
