Microsoft launches an 8.9-inch Windows tablet in Spain (no, not the Surface mini) [Update]

Microsoft has launched a new 8.9-inch Windows tablet - but if you were hoping that the company had finally got around to launching its unreleased Surface mini, you're out of luck. Besides, the mini had an 8-inch display, whereas this device is slightly larger - and unless you're a big fan of the Real Madrid football club, you're probably not going to want it anyway.

In its role as official technology partner for the world-famous team, Microsoft has launched the 'Windows Tablet Real Madrid Edition' (or 'Windows Tablet Edición Real Madrid', if you prefer) in Spain, and in addition to offering some decent specs, it can also be personalized with a range of options, including:

  • A choice of three rear designs: 'Team Celebration' (pictured above), the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, or the Real Madrid club crest
  • Add one of three slogans to the tablet
  • Add your name to the rear

The special edition Windows 8.1 tablet comes with the new Real Madrid app pre-installed, allowing users to connect with the team's community of fans and access exclusive interviews and other content. Key specs of the device include:

  • 8.9-inch IPS LCD with WUXGA (1920x1200px) resolution
  • Quad-core Intel Atom Z3735F processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 32GB onboard storage
  • 5MP rear camera
  • 2MP front-facing camera
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • 6700mAh battery
  • 233.2 x 148.2 x 8mm; 369g

There are two pricing options to choose from:

  • The tablet with your choice of rear design and slogan costs €199 ($220 USD)
  • You can also get the tablet with a matching Bluetooth keyboard and case plus your name, and choice of rear design and slogan for €249 ($276)

While the tablet itself doesn't feature Microsoft branding, the packaging does, and so does the sales site for the device. As with other affordable Windows PCs, the Windows Tablet Real Madrid Edition also includes a free one-year Office 365 Personal subscription (worth €69), which comes with 1TB of OneDrive storage.

And to sweeten the deal further, Microsoft is also running a special launch promotion for the device: early buyers of the tablet will get two free tickets for tours of the team's Santiago Bernabéu stadium.

Update: As Neowin member 'illegaloperation' points out, if you were wondering whether or not Microsoft designed and developed the device itself, the answer (unsurprisingly) appears to be no. It looks like the company used an existing reference design from Chinese ODM Chiwu, called the V89.

Football is the opium of the people

So, this just shows how OEMs CAN give you great specs at low prices, €199 for a 8.9" 1920x1200 screen and so on is a deal, specially when other tablets around the same price come with something like 1280x800, which is silly IMO.

I was talking about Windows tablets, I know there are Android based ones with better res screens out.

Only £200 cheaper than HP's offering.

Source article is John Callaham, I wondered where he'd popped off to after he quit writing articles here.

Shame it's still Bay Trail and not Cherry Trail! Screen res is a huge update though!

I'd buy one of those! Obviously not with Real Madrid branding.
I wonder if they have plans for a wider launch.

Looked it up on Aliexpress - $185 USD - so plus the Microsoft box and office 365 subscription, AND some custom badging, I'm willing to bet they about break even or only make a small amount. Still, it has a 100% 5 star rating...

That seller doesn't ship to USA. The one that does charges $205.

Interesting that it includes 3G support - are they using the Intel baseband (Intel one being the one acquired through the acquisition of Infineon not too long ago).

A little chunky and iPad like, but cool nonetheless.
