In mid-2015, Microsoft announced that it would be killing off its Photosynth apps and services, finally retiring it in February. While the more vocal enthusiasts were upset, it was clear that Photosynth wasn't very popular as a standalone app. Today though, it makes its triumphant return, as the company has announced some new features that are coming to its Pix Camera app on iOS.
If you're not familiar with Photosynth, the app would allow a user to take multiple photos and automatically stich them together. Because of this, you could get a full 360-degree image using a standard camera, rather than a regular panorama photo. There was also a service that users could upload their Photosynth images to.
Microsoft says that the Photosynth feature that's coming to Pix is similar to the original, and there are more features to come. It also "allows for faster and smoother capture, while also making use of Pix’s auto-enhancement capabilities which improve white balance, tone correction and sharpness."
The other new feature announced today is called Pix Comix, and that uses Moment Capture to identify the most interesting frames in a video to generate a comic strip. The app uses deep learning to select three frames, specifically those that are not blurry or have faces with their eyes shut.

Microsoft says that it's continuing to develop the AI capabilities of its Pix Camera app, based on user feedback. The new features should be available today, and you can download Pix from the App Store here.
