Samsung has just announced the Exynos Modem 5100, the first 5G modem that is fully compliant with 3GPP standards. Samsung says that the new hardware will accelerate 5G commercialisation and confirmed it is already working with several global mobile carriers and partners to quickly get the hardware in upcoming devices.

As the industry prepares the shift toward 5G, Samsung will continue to drive the growth of innovative ideas and new services in mobile applications and other emerging industries.”
The Exynos Modem 5100 supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums that are laid out by the 3GPP 5G standard, as well as legacy networks including 2G, GSM/CDMA, 3G WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA, and 4G LTE. With the chip, you’ll see a downlink speed of up to 2-gigabits per second (Gbps) while on 5G, or speeds of up to 1.6Gbps on 4G.
5G is expected to radically shake the world up as it will not only power mobile data connections but will also connect the Internet of Things (IoT) and enable ultra-high resolution videos, holograms, real-time artificial intelligence, and autonomous driving. The new modem will be available to customers by the end of the year.
