Samsung Galaxy XR headset launches for $1799

Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy XR, its first Android XR headset, developed with Google and Qualcomm.

Samsung today officially launched the Galaxy XR, the first Android XR headset developed in partnership with Qualcomm and Google. Samsung also revealed that it is working on AI glasses along with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, powered by Android XR to compete with Ray-Ban Meta glasses.

Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Platform, the Galaxy XR features two 4K Micro-OLED displays with a 90Hz refresh rate and a 109-degree FoV for an immersive viewing experience. It also includes two high-resolution pass-through cameras, six world-facing tracking cameras, four eye-tracking cameras, one depth sensor, and a flicker sensor to offer seamless digital experiences with the physical surroundings.

Galaxy XR can track users’ head, hand, and eye movement. So, users can easily interact with the headset. Thanks to strategically placed microphones, users can also use Gemini to interact with Galaxy XR without raising their hands.

The battery pack is separated from the headset, making the headset more compact, light, and comfortable to wear. Samsung claims 2.5 hours of battery life when watching videos and 2 hours of general use. There is also a detachable light shield that can be removed for comfort and inserted for deeper immersion.

Google is also releasing XR-optimized versions of Google Maps, YouTube, Circle to Search, and Google Photos for Galaxy XR. Since the Android XR platform is built on OpenXR standards, developers can use OpenXR, WebXR, or Unity to bring their XR experiences to Galaxy XR.
