Samsung's new Galaxy Note8 will be unveiled next month in New York City

The Galaxy Note7, pictured in happier, less fiery times

Samsung has recently been busy dredging up uncomfortable memories of its fiery flagship, with last week's launch of the Galaxy Note Fan Edition. That device has apparently been quite popular so far, but many buyers are eagerly awaiting the all-new model, rather than a refurbished version of the ill-fated Galaxy Note7.

There's been no end of rumors and leaks about the new Galaxy Note8, which had been expected to be announced in September. But a Samsung executive confirmed to Korean financial journal The Investor that the new device will be unveiled in New York City 'later next month', signalling a launch event towards the end of August.

The executive did not confirm a rumor claiming that the exact date of the announcement will be August 23. But according to the report, Samsung recently brought forward its original planned date for the unveiling, in order to ensure that the Galaxy Note8 will be ready to go on sale worldwide in September.

If that proves to be accurate, Samsung's new flagship could beat Apple's new iPhones to market by several weeks.
