Star Wars BB-8 Droid toy now available

The official Star Wars The Force Awakens toys are here after a worldwide launch and leading the pack is the BB-8 Astromech Droid.

BB-8 rolls around much like it will in the upcoming movie via an accompanying app for iOS and Android as a remote control. Sphero, the company behind the toy, promise a Windows Phone app is being worked on, however with no firm release date.

BB-8 listens and responds to voice commands, rolls around autonomously and Sphero claim it will develop a personality based on how you've interacted with the droid. It will even "playfully" try to get your attention if you ignore it for too long. Alternatively you can set it to 'Patrol' mode to roll around a designated area.

In a sort of link to R2-D2 and maybe a preview of the droid's capabilities in the movie, BB-8 also has a holographic message function. The messages can be recorded, viewed and sent using augmented reality-type technology within the partnered smartphone apps.

The US$150 toy comes with an inductive charging stand with each charge offering 60 minutes playing time.
