Subnautica creator and studio heads replaced by Krafton ahead of sequel release

In a surprising move, the parent company behind Subnautica 2 developer Unknown Worlds has announced a massive leadership shakeup at the studio.

Last year, Unknown Worlds, the developer behind the fan-favorite underwater exploration and survival sandbox Subnautica, announced a sequel. The title is supposed to expand on the gameplay and even explore a brand-new planet's oceans. However, ahead of the game's highly anticipated release on PC and Xbox, a major shift is happening behind the scenes at the studio.

"Steve Papoutsis, gaming industry veteran, has been appointed CEO of Unknown Worlds, where he will oversee the studio’s overall management and creative direction," said studio owner Krafton in a press release. "Papoutsis joins the company from Striking Distance Studios, where he currently serves as Chief Executive Officer."

For those unfamiliar with Striking Distance Studios, it was the developer behind The Callisto Protocol, and Papoutsis was the CEO during that game's development. Papoutsis is taking the place of Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire.

Cleveland was the designer and director behind the original Subnautica. Meanwhile, Ted Gill was the Unknown Worlds CEO, while Max McGuire was the company's co-founder. In one move, Krafton has completely replaced the leadership team at the developer.

"While KRAFTON sought to keep the Unknown Worlds’ co-founders and original creators of the Subnautica series involved in the game’s development, the company wishes them well on their next endeavors," added the company. "Importantly, KRAFTON is confident that Papoutsis, with decades of experience behind the planning, development, and production of some of the highest-rated game franchises, will bring renewed energy and momentum to delivering the long-anticipated Subnautica 2 experience to fans."

Krafton acquired Unknown Worlds back in 2021 while promising that the studio would operate independently.

Subnautica 2 is slated to launch before the end of 2025, and it's slated to hit PC and Xbox Series X|S in early access. Xbox Game Pass subscribers will also get the game on day one.
