The latest generation of Apple Watch Ultra was revealed in 2023, and after a one-year gap, Apple is believed to announce the Watch Ultra 3 at the upcoming September event. Besides a new Ultra watch, the iPhone maker also plans to reveal the iPhone 17 series, Apple Watch Series 11, and a cheaper Apple Watch SE with a plastic body at the event.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 will get a slew of new features and upgrades to keep up with rivals such as the Galaxy Watch Ultra and Google Pixel Watch 3. A faster S11 chip and a better battery life are other upgrades we expect to see with the Watch Ultra 3. But here are the top three features to look for in Apple’s upcoming Ultra watch.
Better connectivity with 5G
The existing Apple Watch Ultra 2 supports 4G LTE with an Intel modem. However, a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that Apple will switch to a MediaTek modem in Watch Ultra 3, which will bring support for 5G Redcap—a 5G variant specifically developed for wearables and devices that don’t require 5G’s full potential.
While the 5G Redcap won’t be as fast as 5G on your phone, it’s still faster than the current 4G LTE. Apple Watch Series 11 is also expected to switch to 5G RedCap.
Satellite messaging is finally coming to Apple smartwatches
iPhone 14 in 2022 was the first Apple iPhone to support satellite messaging. Since then, customers have been waiting to get the feature on their Apple Watches. But the waiting might finally end this year. Gurman says Apple will add satellite connection to Watch Ultra 3 by relying on Globalstar’s fleet of satellites, the same company that supports iPhone satellite connectivity.
The feature would let users send text messages in remote areas where cellular or Wi-Fi connections are out of reach.
Blood pressure detection is down the road
Blood pressure detection is a highly anticipated health-focused feature of the Apple Watch Ultra 3. While the feature was already delayed, Gurman suggests it will finally be available on 2025 Apple Watch models.
Gurman added that the blood pressure detection works similarly to Apple’s sleep apnea detector. Instead of giving specific readings, it notifies users if any hypertension is detected.
What do you think about the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and its features?
