Xbox.com getting major Metro overhaul very soon

Later in this year, Xbox 360 owners will get access to a new Dashboard overhaul, but before that happens, the Xbox.com web site will be getting some major changes of its own. In a post on the Xbox.com blog, Microsoft announced that the "My Xbox" section of the site will be shut down and replaced with a new "Social" section in the coming days.

One of the big new features for the Xbox.com Social section are Beacons, which will be introduced on the site before it appears in the Xbox 360 Dashboard revamp. Beacons will allow Xbox.com users to mark specific Xbox 360 games with specific days and times when they will be played. The player's friends can then know when to join in for online matches.

As you can see in the above screenshot, the Social section has a look that resembles the Metro tiles user interface for Windows Phone 7 and the upcoming Windows 8. You will be able to see the recent games you have played, which friends are online and more. You will also be able to see which Xbox 360 achievements you and your friends have unlocked.

Another new section coming to the Xbox.com web site is Video, where users will be able to browse the Zune Marketplace to purchase movies and TV episodes. You will be able to play those videos later on your Xbox 360 console or on your Windows Phone device.
