You can now mod your Steam Controller through Valve's CAD files

Valve releases Steam Controller CAD files, enabling customization while restricting use to non-commercial terms.

Steam Controller

Valve's new Steam Controller went on sale just a couple of days ago, and its demand was so insanely high that it brought down the Steam store's servers almost immediately as gamers rushed to grab a unit. Although Valve had limited purchases to two units per order, each with a price tag of $99, scalpers had soon listed the hardware for sale for almost double that price. As demand and the popularity of the Steam Controller continue to grow, Valve has decided to give enterprising gamers something more to be excited about.

Valve has released the CAD files for its Steam Controller and Puck. For those unaware, the latter serves as a wireless receiver and charging station. The idea behind this release is that the CAD files will enable avid gamers with designer skills to mod and customize their Steam Controller and Puck.

The CAD files are hosted on GitLab here, and include the details for the external shell (surface topology) of the hardware, along with STP models, STL models, and engineering drawings. Valve has thrown around some ideas that designers can experiment with such as puck holders and controller sweaters.

It is important to note that the GitLab repository is hosted under a Creative Commons license, which only allows the non-commercial usage of the content. It is a "worldwide, royalty-free, non-sublicensable, non-exclusive, irrevocable license", but as mentioned, it is a bit restrictive in some areas.

Valve has emphasized that while anyone is free to use its CAD renders and engineering drawings, it encourages only seasoned professionals because incorrect modifications may cause damage to you or your controller. It's also worth remembering that if you cause any damage to your controller during this experimentation process, it won't be covered under warranty. If that sounds scary, you're probably better off ignoring the CAD files altogether and just waiting for what's next from Valve, namely the Steam Machine.
