Microsoft has announced that it is joining hands with the Selenium project to enable users to test Internet Explorer (IE) mode in Microsoft Edge with Internet Explorer Driver. Users will be able to run their tests in IE mode in Edge by making a few changes to an existing test that runs against Internet Explorer.
For those unaware, IE mode enables organizations that still require Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) for backward compatibility to run critical legacy websites or apps directly in Microsoft Edge. Now, by running your tests in IE mode, you can verify that your legacy web content works as expected in the company's Chromium-based browser.
To begin running tests in IE mode, you will require Microsoft Edge (obviously), Selenium 4 or later language bindings, and Internet Explorer Driver version 4.0.0.0 or later. Once you have downloaded IE Driver, make certain that you have configured it in accordance with Selenium's Required Configuration.
From the 15th of June, 2022, some versions of Windows 10 will not offer support for IE11. As such, Microsoft recommends that organizations that are still dependent on IE11 should migrate to Microsoft Edge and use IE mode, if needed.
