YouTube is getting a new video player

YouTube has received a new update that redesigns the video player and several other features to make them less intrusive.

There is absolutely no doubt that YouTube is the biggest video-sharing platform out there. A major reason for this is that Google invests significant money and effort in its development in a bid to retain existing users while attracting new ones. It recently announced new features based on the mental health and well-being of teenage users. Now, it has revealed another update that is much bigger in scope.

YouTube is getting a major revamp across multiple platforms. On mobile, web, and TV devices, the platform will feature a new video player UI that is designed to be less obstructive. You'll also notice new controls and icons. In the same vein, the "seek" feature, which allows you to double-tap the side of the player to skip content, will become less intrusive, too. In addition, switching tabs on mobile devices will appear more seamless.

In terms of interaction with content, the like animations on certain videos will reflect the theme of the video being played. For example, if you like a music video, the like icon will transform into an animated musical note. It'll also become easier to save videos to your Watch Later list, with the process becoming smoother and "visual".

Finally, YouTube is introducing a more structured system for the UX hosting the replies to comments. This threading mechanism will make it easier to view and focus on replies in the original thread that you are interested in.

YouTube went on to say that:

YouTube should feel as vibrant and dynamic as the creators and videos on it, so we're aligning the energy of our content and the look of our interface to make your experience more enjoyable and engaging.

All of the changes discussed above have begun rolling out already, so they should become available on your preferred device sooner rather than later. You can offer feedback about them through the mechanisms detailed here.
