Are Americans really this prude?!?

Recommended Posts

Canada has more diversity than the United States. We take in a higher percentage of immigrants and refugees. 49.9% of Toronto is foreign born. Vancouver also has a very large visible minority population (favouring East Asians and South Asians). While there are some clusters of ethnicity (there are about six Chinatowns, a Greek Town, Little Italy, Little Portugal, Little India and others) there is a lot more integration as children often relocate to other parts of the city and there is no widespread discrimination against interracial dating (except maybe with the individual parents).

p.s. I can't even search for the visible minority of NYC because all of the results seem to be Canadian. I'm guessing that you use a different term.

IF you take it vs total population then yes because Canada has a smaller population then the US has. If you take it in total numbers then I would say no.

And again, my original question was what Neowin people think about being naked in front of your kids!

No, your original question was "Are Americans really this prude?". While a vocal minority certainly are, I'd wager that a vast majority would simply laugh about it or not pay it any notice at all if it weren't a celebrity involved.

No it wasn't, read the whole post and not just the title before you start making comments!

You were the one turning it into something against All the Americans

I don't agree with that in the slightest bit. Perhaps the 20-30 age range would react like that, but 30+ would have a fit, as evidence by the comments posted on the article.

For example in many parts of Florida where people go for vacation and relax in the tropical climate you cant even make out with your girlfriend on the beach. This would never happen in a European country as it would be a violation of personal freedom.

Plus they are very anti nudidty and alot of other things that I can not come to think of..

Strange as I would suggest the majority of porn comes from America :p

back to my statement a few posts ago, thats again east vs west coast america.... and I'd argue that more porn comes from Russia and former soviet countries :p

What you have here is a VERY vocal minority that for some unknown reason equate any form of nudity with or nudity at home with your young child a bad thing or some other BS, they don't really speak for the vast majority of Americans that don't care and that also think we have way too prudish laws just to appease this idiotic minority

So Neowin people,

we've now figured out that some people think Americans are prude,

other get really annoyed when you call Americans prude.

Now, are you a bad parent if you are naked around your kids (no mather how old they are)

I don't understand the problem..? When I was a child, as someone said earlier, I showered with my parents. When you look back on it, yeah, you think 'gross', but there was nothing wrong with it, because I was a child, and couldn't do these things on my own. I used to love showering and my dad picking me up and putting my face right at the faucet (or maybe he was trying to drown me  ). There was no sexual anything behind it, just them being parents. By age 10 I knew the difference between a hooker, ######, and slut, where babies came from, and pretty much everything parents should teach there kids about the world. I was always a curious one.

What is wrong with some people today? This was normal as far as I knew.

EDIT:^ To the above question. No, you are not, in my opinion this is normal, you should know what these things are and at that age. Besides you don't think of them as sexual stimulation parts, just, a normal body.

I'm almost 40, and I don't think it's as big a deal as it's made out to be, it really is the retarded vocal minority that are up to their usual BS.

You are COMPLETELY WRONG. Come here to NYC and say that again

Lets see. I am in a suburb of long island. I get my breakfast and lunch from a deli owner who is 1st gen South Korean, I get my coffee from a crepe place who the owner is from turkey and wife is russian (1st gen) , MY friend at work is First gen equadorian, I get my sometimes eat at a sandwich shop who's owner is from afghanistan, and I help people at work who are from haiti and all over south and central american. All 1st generation.

This is only whats here by me at work. I can come up with more if people like.

New York is an exception to the rest of the USA when it comes to immigrants. Also only people from crappy countries come to USA now. It is a fact more people choose to go to Europe for asylum and freedom than any other place on earth. So many Americans are leaving the USA to and renouncing there citizenship that the US state department is now charging a fee of 450 USD for this to try to make money off of it. LOL have to pay 450 USD to renounce citizen ship is NOT a free country.

Thanks, so I'm not alone in this then

I was raised exactly the same, and I don't think it scared me for life or anything

Hm, I would say personally I wouldn't want my parents naked around me after I hit a certain age, and that's how I was raised. I'd say after I was 12-13, no more naked parents. As far as does it make you a bad parent...I dunno about that. Everyone is raised differently so I don't think that automatically makes you a bad parent. That's my 2 cents...call me prude or whatever, I don't give 2 craps :p.

I wouldn't narrow it down to Americans at all.

This is the thing, we were born naked. We choose to put clothes on, so it shouldnt be a big shock when people don't have clothes on.

I do kind of prefer to wear clothes though as it hides my todger! It's for my girlfriends viewing only :)

Well that's when puberty kicks in i guess, so that's kinda normal for kids to act like that

Just to be clear, I have no children, i was just amased by the reactions on that tread so i wanted to know what people overhere thought about it

I would like to correct one thing: "prude" is a noun. "prudish" is the adjective form of the word.

I'm not going to get into the argument that's taking place here, but five pages of grammatical incorrectness is making me twitch uncontrollably...

You prude....

(Just kidding!)

EDIT: (Just looked up the definition, cause to be honest, I always thought it was similar to calling someone stuck-up about something. I was somewhat wrong. Oh well, now I know.)

Well maybe on Galactic Sector ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha the first language is English, it's not in Belgium :D

So sorry for the grammatical incorrectness :)

I like how you have to compare an entire continent to one country. That's what you have to do to make your argument look valid.

No worries :) I wasn't really calling you out in particular--was just surprised to see this much discussion and nobody else noticing it or using the correct word.

@ 3 Charisma

If you spend the time to read through 5 pages you might as will give your own opinion, no?

I prefer not to get into arguments about things like this. I'll never be able to change most folks' minds about Americans, because the fact of the matter is, they haven't been to America nor met many 'average' citizens of the country. The reason stereotypes exist--any stereotypes, not just this one--is because people do not know experientially, they know only what they've heard or seen on TV. It can be hard to even realise you have a distorted perception, much less seek out and accept the real story--and for something like this, most people don't even care to bother with it, since it doesn't affect their daily life. Besides, why do that when it's so fun to feel superior? ;)
