No software is perfect. Windows 8 is not an exception. However, that's no reason to defend Microsoft so much. Yes, they made some nice improvements and are brave enough to push what they think is the future of computing, and I applaud them for doing that instead of just releasing Windows 7.5. But still, that's no excuse for leaving some UI elements unfinished. I won't go into detail because there are other topics discussing this.

It's a question of them being unfinished because WE haven't decided yet what should be done with them. It's a starting point - however, they (Microsoft) are waiting for a direction (directive) from us - the folks that will actually use the OS. If anything, Windows 95 was so dull and bland because it was a starting point - same was largely true of NT 4 Workstation. Windows 8 is the first multiple-input OS from the company - truly foreign territory. They have given us a starting point - what do we want to do with it, since going backward isn't an option.

the size of the fonts in this thread, i can't deal with.

Are you kidding me? You think she "has an axe to grind" because she worked at PARC?

Besides, she consults not just generally on principles of human computer interaction but even specifically in the areas of mobile usability and usability of touch devices? I don't think we're dealing with a "graybeard" here who isn't willing to let go of her old ways?

Lets keep it simple. Windows 8 is based on previous versions of Windows which have developed over time, just like the 3rd party drivers and software that were built to run on it.

There is no magic in Win 8, just a company trying to create a 'one size fits all' approach to the tablet/desktop market. If i was to hold the developers and programmers with the same high regard as you have then i would expect so much more and be disappointed with their limited offerings they have produced because it now takes more time to do the things (UI wise) I could do in the previous OS.

Suggestion: Some of you might remember the Aero Taskforce and the Windows 7 Taskforce initiatives. Why doesn't Neowin start an official Windows 8 taskforce thread? Collect all inconsistencies/oversights/old UI elements which should long have been retired/suggestions for improvements and whatnot, however minor the flaw may be. Then after a set amount of time send the collected feedback to MS in the hope that they incorporate some of it into Windows 9 (or 'Blue' or 8.x or whatever else the next release will be called).

Are you seriously native enough to think Microsoft doesn't know exactly what a mess their own operating system is? Please. Repeat after me: Microsoft. Does. Not. Care.

Losing members? That's quite a statement to make. Do you have any numbers to back that up? :)

you can lose members, but not have your membership numbers go down, you only lose the people that disagree with you while newer ones come in ;) and the poster is of course free to leave at any time they please *sets mines in field around neowin*

Show me to my start menu please. And I don't mean the oversized eye sore that is the start screen.

The start menu was redundant anyway, same as the desktop, which I hope they'll remove soon. (retaining legacy app support on the start screen)

      New PowerToys update fixes memory leaks and other issues by Taras Buria Another bug-fixing update is available for PowerToys version 0.100. After releasing version 0.100.1 with a bunch of bug fixes and patches, Microsoft pushed version 0.100.2 to address two important issues with one of Command Palette Dock's features. With PowerToys 0.100.2, Microsoft fixed the performance meter displaying incorrect values and memory leaks, which are particularly unwanted things in the current situation with overpriced PC hardware. Here is the changelog: Reverted a Performance Monitor dock refresh change that forced item refreshes on every metric update Fixed a memory leak in the Performance Monitor dock extension by reusing stable network upload/download band items instead of creating new list items on each refresh For those unfamiliar, Command Palette Dock is a relatively new addition to PowerToys. It is a taskbar-like tool that you can keep on top of the screen to pin various useful widgets, commands, and more. It can display time, weather, your PC's performance metrics, and more. Microsoft introduced the Command Palette Dock in March 2026 in PowerToys 0.98. Microsoft has dedicated documentation for Command Palette Dock, and you can check it out on the official Microsoft Learn website. You can update PowerToys to the latest version by going to Settings > General and clicking "Check for updates." Alternatively, you can download the installer from GitHub using this link. In other news, Microsoft is working on a new window-management utility for PowerToys.       Wonder if they are trying to slow down Linux traction (not saying this is the only factor) in the consumer space. With the most pressure probably being steam deck/box, etc.
