try setting things up with this http://forkk.net/MultiMC4/ it makes working with mods a LOT easier plus you can have multiple minecraft profiles

Nothing wrong with that, necessarily. The more the merrier, even if your house is a decent trek away. My cabin is only in viewing distance of one other dwelling that I know of, and just barely at that.
