Neowin Digital Gallery - Yearly Edition 2013

Recommended Posts

Now that mention it, a lot of the regulars disappeared, crazyy8s, moonman, dejon... :/

I had made an active decision to stop posting in the Neowin Digital Gallery. I found issue with the fact that people would post images of scantily dressed women (which is fine), and that some of the users would follow with undignified comments that I felt did not belong on a forum in which art, ideas and critique were shared. I brought up the issue and nobody seemed to feel the same way, so I decided to stop sharing my images.

It has been quite some time since then, and with odd timing related to Guppy's post, about two weeks ago I decided to start posting here again. Since I "left" the Digital Gallery, I've started working a full time job and I'm 3/5 done with my MBA; as such, free time for photography is quite limited.

-------------

Now, for the image I came to post!

Does anybody know what this is? I shot it about 2 months back during a meteor shower. It looks like a galaxy to me, but I'm not quite sure. The 4 exposures range in time from 6-30 seconds.

Surely is doesn't matter what people post does it?

You post your photos for feedback and can skip past the daft comments / photos :)

How did you catch such a detailed photo of space? It does look like a galaxy

Sure does look like a galaxy, or at least a nebula!

Of course it matters what other people post. The whole reason for coming to this community is because of what other people post.

Nikon D90, 28mm f1.8 @ f1.8 and 6-30 seconds. I went out to an uninhabited area in the SF Bay area (click the image to view the map on flickr for the exact location) that is about as dark as you can get in the area.

I was shooting for meteors, but got this instead. I guess I'm happy with it, though!

just for the guppy.

Well i'll admit, I spam "id hit that" any where and everywhere, followed by a serious comment though :p Seriously crazzy, even @ dpreview, you get lots of horny instagramers :/ ! You do have a point though, but why quit posting on childish posts? there are ignore buttons you know!

Might wanna lay off capturing other galaxies or they might take you!!! Nice catch! I would've just discarded it as shutter blur or something alike. !

Ps and the same goes for you, STAY back :p

A few from today:

6 minute exposure^

Those are beautiful ! the first and third one, what lens?!

Cheers! I used the 17-40 L mostly at around 22mm as UWA + ND Grad holder = Not usable at the wide end :p

I've been tryin to get some night shots of the starts. I can't get the iso and shutter time right, but eventually i'll get there.

i had to tweak this one in photoshop (mostly blurred it to get rid of the noise),

also some of the stars are streaking, this is due to the shutter time being too long. i think it was maybe 15-20 sec in this pic.

Not that bad! Welcome to the digital gallery. Could've curtain synced the stop sign to light it up a bit.

thanks. no idea what you mean by "curtain synced" though, but i'll look it up :p

I usually just take random pictures of whatever i see that i think looks cool.

I've done some portraits for people that i may post on my s ite, not sure, but some of the other pictures i've taken can be found here

http://www.joshx.com...ry/photography/

nothing major or awesome though, just a hobby.

Wow! Modesty apart? This is far from NOT awesome:

What the hell! POST MOAR often!

:D It was minus 2 degrees that morning so I felt worse standing there taking many many shots lol. Need to keep moving to keep semi-warm!

Would you believe me if i told you that photo was taken with cheap Walmart $50 blackfriday kodak camera?

I recently got a Canon t2i, so i can take more complex photos though. I know its not super pro, but it works. For example the night pictures.

But i still like to use cheap cameras for some shots.

thanks :D

No, I wouldn't! pretty amazing shot

Just proves http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/notcamera.htm this guy has a point ;) He has pretty good basic articles, just don't read his equipment reviews, he biases them according to how he feels that day, one day it's canon, the next it's nikon and then back to canon... But again, his begginer "guides" are a good starting point.

Wow, I'd love to live somewhere we got those temps... in the tropics I think 3-5 celsius nasty humid, moist, watery is all we get :p

Couple of shots from december taken with work camera (Canon somemodel, shockproof and waterproof)

Makeshift flash ( iphone 4s :p ) I'm guessing that's the weird color cast. 8412851366_52ede097e9_h.jpg

My 9-10 year old mutt ! Healthy lazy fat ass queen! My girl calls here a "watermelon with chopsticks for feet". Canela! I love her dearly! :D

8412850976_e6230d2bd7_h.jpg

My best half improvising with a crappy Samsung NV15 with touch buttons ( well crappy for night time shots without flash anyway...). trying to get artistics with a dozen dozen roses I gave her for her BD.

This one is for teh lulz... what is out of place ? :p

Shutter 1/50 ftw, man 50 mm sure makes big noses if you focus inadequately.. Was fooling around anyway !

Tequila and ranch dressing?!?!

And man... No offense but that water mark is too obtrusive! It distracts from the image.

BRACE YOURSELVES. The watermark war is returning!

    • KillerPDF 1.4.2 by Razvan Serea KillerPDF is a lightweight, portable PDF editor for Windows built for users who want full control without subscriptions, installers, or telemetry. It runs as a single executable, making it ideal for USB use and field work. You can view PDFs with smooth PDFium rendering, navigate quickly with thumbnails, zoom, and shortcuts, and reorganize pages using drag-and-drop. It supports merging multiple PDFs, splitting documents, and extracting selected pages. KillerPDF also allows inline text editing with font matching to preserve the original layout, plus annotations like text boxes, freehand drawing, highlights, and reusable signatures. You can search full text, copy content easily, and print documents with flattened annotations. Designed as a free and open alternative to bloated PDF tools, it works fully offline on Windows 10/11 x64. No runtimes install. Everything needed is inside the EXE (targets .NET Framework 4.8, which ships with every supported Windows release). KillerPDF key features: High-quality PDF rendering via PDFium Edit PDF text inline (double-click to modify text) Page thumbnails and fast navigation with zoom and shortcuts Merge multiple PDFs into one Split PDFs and extract selected pages Drag-and-drop page reordering Font matching to preserve original document appearance Text boxes for notes Freehand drawing tools Highlight overlays with adjustable color, size, opacity Undo actions and clear per-page annotations Create, draw, and save reusable signatures Click-to-place signatures anywhere Full-text search with highlighted results Drag-select or Ctrl+A to copy text Print with annotations flattened Portable single-file app (~10 MB) No installer, no admin rights required No account, no telemetry KillerPDF 1.4.2 changelog: What's new PDF form filling. Interactive PDF forms now render their fields (text inputs, checkboxes, radio buttons) as live controls. Fill them in directly and save — field values are written back into the PDF. PDF outline (bookmark) navigation. A new OUTLINES tab in the sidebar displays the document's bookmark tree. Click any entry to jump to that page. The sidebar auto-fits its width to the longest entry on open and can be dragged wider; switching back to PAGES snaps to the pages-mode width. Fixed Page rotation no longer reverts after saving. Rotations applied via the sidebar context menu now persist correctly through the save pipeline. Copied text words were out of order on PDFs where glyphs are stored in non-reading order (Issue #66). Text extraction now sorts words by position and uses a dynamic line-grouping threshold so both drag-select and Select All produce correctly ordered output. PDFs with malformed or non-standard XRef tables now open in read-only mode instead of showing "Invalid entry in XRef table" and failing entirely. • The very fact that a TPM (v2.0 specifically which is part of the issue I suspect) is now a baseline for any supported Windows installation will naturally mean other vendors will start to leverage it as they know it'll be there. It's called progress, and it's always been the way. A TPM isn't a windows thing, it's just a module designed to securely store keys. Secure boot isn't a Windows thing (although MS are the TCA as I recall hence the upheaval this year as the 2011 certs expire), it's just a way to verify a bootloader is signed. Windows simply leverages them.
    • It's a local account with the ability to reset a password at a very base level. I really don't get the issue that gets whipped up around it But you do you
