You couldn't do that before, so it's definitely a novelty. There's also a new option 'Show Store apps on the taskbar'  in Taskbar Properties.

It won't work in Metro. In Metro, the task switcher was designed to be used with your thumb, which is why it is the way it is, and where it's located.

What a brilliant powerpoint presentation it must have been to explain the board of directors, how people will empty their purses towards store apps if it was shoved down loyal customers throats.
