Malaysia Airlines 'loses contact with plane' (and search effort updates)

Why wouldn't they be known? Any crew travelling on the jump seat would be detailed in the load sheet, the original and one copy of which would be kept on the ground. Unless you mean passengers who were invited onto the jump seat, in which case they're still in the passenger manifest

A pilot on CNN News says it is common for airline employees to request a ride, and they are not recorded as being a passenger.

No and probably never will, as hinted by PM Najib.

Thanks, just couldnt be bothered reading though 60 pages to find out that they are no closer to finding the plane then they were hours after it went down.

Carry on :)

That's correct, they are not on the passenger manifest, but they are included in the load sheet as the loading calculations have to include them. Information taken includes name and company ID number. The original and a copy is kept on the ground.

Aha, good catch. I don't suppose they'd use the same card... ;) nah, that's silly.

Back to the drawing board :s

This is from the reddit thread on the matter:

edit 2: Realized I was being dumb after the 5th inbox comment saying that Malaysia Airlines only flies -ER's (thanks guys!). If they only fly -ER's then that means that OP's safety card could only have come from an ER, which means that Malaysia Airlines doesn't put the suffix on their safety cards. Got it. My apologies. On the plus side, this means OP still has a chance!

Perth (Australia) (AFP) - A US Navy "black box" detector made its much-anticipated debut in the oceanic hunt for flight MH370 on Friday but Australia's search chief warned it was crunch time with the box's signal set to expire soon.

As the extensive search wore on, Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said he believed the country's long-ruling regime was concealing information on the crisis, saying "the government knows more than us."

The Australian naval vessel Ocean Shield arrived with a "towed pinger locator" capable of homing in on signals from the black box, as 14 planes scoured the remote Indian Ocean search area for signs of a crash site.

I predict they will find nothing. Again hope I'm wrong!

A Chinese ship searching for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane in the southern Indian Ocean has picked up a pulse signal, Chinese media say.

They say the signal has a frequency of 37.5kHz per second - the same as those emitted by the flight recorders.

However there is no evidence so far that it is linked to MH370.

Dozens of ships and planes have joined the search, with the operation moving into its most intensive phase before batteries on the data recorders fade.

^ Cross your fingers.

"This could be a variety of things," said oceanographer Simon Boxall, who said the frequency is used by a variety of instruments.

"We've had a lot of red herrings, hyperbole on this whole search," the lecturer in ocean and earth science at the University of Southampton told CNN. "I'd really like to see this data confirmed."

On Saturday the Haixun 01 - one of two Chinese ships in the area - picked up the signal at about 25 degrees south latitude and 101 degrees east longitude, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.

"It is yet to be established whether it is related to the missing jet," it cautioned.

^ Battery may be losing power or dead.  Also, this is a deep ocean depth.

A senior Malaysian government source told CNN that Flight 370 flew around Indonesian airspace after it dropped off Malaysian military radar. The plane may have been intentionally taken along a route designed to avoid radar detection, the source said.

After reviewing radar track data from neighboring countries, officials have concluded that the passenger jet curved north of Indonesia before turning south toward the southern Indian Ocean. Its path took it around Indonesian airspace.

Malaysian government officials have said previously that the plane appeared to have been deliberately diverted from its original course, which would have taken it north to Beijing.

"What's also interesting about this route ... is it appears it goes to the designated waypoints that we (pilots) use (and air traffic control uses to give directions)," said CNN aviation analyst Miles O'Brien. "This particular route that is laid out happens to coincide with some of these named intersections. So what it shows is an experienced pilot somewhere in the mix on this."

What it shows is a well-planned operation by someone who is very experienced in both flying and the radar coverage of that area.

(RNN) - A pinger locator being used in the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has detected signals consistent with aircraft black boxes, an Australian search official said Monday.

"Their work has enabled us to come up with an underwater search area that is narrowly focused." Angus Houston, head of the Joint Agency Coordination Center, said in a Monday press conference.

The Ocean Shield, the Australian vessel, was towing a pinger locator underwater when they heard the consistent ping.

The searchers will now employ pinger locators underwater to further pinpoint the area.

The future of the search is now below the waves in deep water, Houston said. "An underwater pinger locator will be deployed and will continue to work," he said.

But the agency chief confirmed that the search is far from finished.

"We still got a lot of difficult, pain-staking work to do to confirm that this is where the aircraft entered the water," Houston cautioned.

The underwater search area has been further winnowed thanks to the multi-national effort, Houston said. He took the time to thank the Malaysian authorities for their assistance.

Houston said they need further confirmation in the form of some wreckage, something they haven't been able to do yet.

"In very deep, oceanic waters, nothing happens fast," he said.

The plane has been missing since taking off from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on March 8, with 239 on board.

hope it turns out to be something after all this time of nothing.

I hope it does too. The families of the passengers deserve some type of resolution, even if it's going to come with bad news.

Serious question, if the black box only records two hours,  what good will that for this flight?

If the plane flew longer than two hours.  and it had to do because of depressurization and they passed out then there wont be any answers or talking.

Engines wind down,  "Sink rate...Sink rate" (Maybe depending on speed),  then Terrain Pull Up,  Terrain Pull up"

**end of recording**

Now if the other one records the whole flight then at least they'll know when something happened.

Voice recorder only 2 hours, data recorder holds 25 hours of data.

Oh ok so atleast they'll get some info but voice is pretty much out of it.

voice data helps, but the money is on the flight data. Also a month as passed, hopefully this wont be another Amelia Earhart case.

    • I'm still rocking iOS 25.x on my primary phone cuz iOS 26 still has usability quirks (mostly aesthetic and thus its UX) which I don't wanna deal with -- and I've been piloting them with all of these updates on my backup phone, so I'm well aware of its "improvements" since iOS 26 was first released (compared to version 26.5.x).
