Gmail on the web now lets you resize the Chat and Rooms sections
by Jay Bonggolto
Google recently introduced a major overhaul for Gmail for G Suite (now Google Workspace) users last year that merged video, chat, email, files, and tasks under a single roof. The integrated workspace experience allows you to access your chat conversations within an organization as well as your shared files and tasks.
Today, Google announced a new update for Chat and Rooms for Gmail on the web. The new experience now lets you resize the Chat and Rooms sections in the left-side navigation of Gmail.
Google says the latest update provides a faster way to keep track of your conversations and open certain chat windows. There's also a straightforward way to use the new resizing option. You can simply click on the header and adjust the size of a Chat or Room section by dragging according to your desired dimension.
The new capability is available to Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus customers. If you're using G Suite's Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education, or Nonprofits version, you can also use the new update.

Google services face outage, making it impossible to login [Update]
by João Carrasqueira
Google services appear to be experiencing outages today, as account information fails to sync, or users are unable to login. We've been noticing issues syncing our Gmail inbox due to a connection error, marked with error code 2014.
The outage appears to be hitting more than one service, and affecting Google accounts in general. On devices not logged in, attempting to do so will result in an error stating the Google account could not be found. Devices that were previously logged in may be signed out if you visit them, with an error code 500 displayed went trying to sign back in.
It's unclear what could be causing the problems, and Google has yet to acknowledge any issues with its services. Meanwhile, DownDetector.com is showing numerous reports of outages in a wide range of services dependent on Google, including Pokémon GO, which uses Google accounts as a login method. Communication service Discord is also apparently affected by the outage.
It seems that the issue affects Google accounts more so than the services themselves, so things like YouTube and Google Search still work if you're not logged in.
Google has since acknowledged the widespread issues through the Team YouTube account on Twitter, saying the company is looking into it. However, a fix doesn't yet seem to be in sight.
Update: Services appear to slowly be coming back online, and we're able to login again. Some elements may still have some problems loading for now, with profile pictures and some thumbnails missing. Things should get back to normal over time.
Update 2: Everything seems to be functional again now, though Google has yet to confirm services are back online. Reports on Downdetector.com also seem to be declining.
Update 3: Google has confirmed the issues have been fixed and everything should be back to normal.

Gmail now lets users edit Microsoft Office files in attachments
by João Carrasqueira
Google has announced a handful of new capabilities for the tools in Google Workspace, formerly known as G Suite. The improvements are coming to Gmail, Google Docs, and Sheets, and they're rolling out today, for the most part.
The first notable improvement is related to Gmail, and it allows users to edit Microsoft Office files directly in Gmail, without converting them to Google Docs' file format. Google already lets users do this, but you'd have to open Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides to open the specific file you wanted. Now, you can open Office files directly from Gmail and edit them without changing their file format.
Additionally, Google is adding support for new formatting options in Docs. For example, the company is adding support for mixed page orientation documents on Google Docs, both for its own file format and Word documents. Next year, the company will also be adding the ability to insert images behind text, as well as watermarks.
Finally, for Excel users, there's yet another new capability - the Macro Converter add-on. If you typically use Excel macros and want to be able to work with them in Google Sheets, this add-on can help you convert the VBA code in Excel macros to Apps Script, which is used by Google's tool. You can install the add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace.
