And why would we need to use flash for the tabs? Couldn't we use collapsable DIVs? When the user clicks a tab, just hide all the other DIVs and show the one he/she clicked on (Y)

That's what I'm thinking (Y)...Well maybe flash would be okay for tabs, but for full pages I can't stand flash navigations because I can't open flash links in new windows/tabs :(

All these ideas are really looking good though ;)

EDIT: Using flash for tabs, would the links in each tab's section be in flash also (The underlined part Staind pointed out) ?

If your gonna go longhorn style, do it right :)

The current page will be displayed under neowin.net, the nav might as well be flash so you can get smooth mouseovers and easily change with icons are visible (if you are on software news, it will be displayed under neowin.net and not be one of hte visible icons).

meh i like it better like this, but i cant speak for you guys.

That's very nice...awesome look and I like it very much. The Neowin logo is a really perfect fit there. But how come no Forum link? Keep up the design! (Y)

I still prefer this layout, notices the revisions. It also adds room for a Lite theme by merely using some css, the ad's will fit in on the side and not take away from the content and the focus.

I think the headline items for the news was too much...I prefer something like 5 news items for each. Nice one too but I prefer the tab style ;)

You have not incorperated Security and Hardware. IMO Your design is worthless. Sorry.

Neowin Needs a facelift plus more areas of interest.

It's not totally worthless IMO. I love the design but we just need to figure out a way to incorporate more content ;)

it's ripfest 2004

Ripping is copying someone else's work and claiming it as your own.

And I vote (N) for flash, it's nice but it should never be a requirement to get content, more it should be the content or complementry to the content. Also, I Strongly disagree with not having all the newsfeeds on one initial screen, look at OSNN, they have 6 on one screen.

yeah i agree no flash, i think using some javascript would be nice though, i think it is going good.

i think the only major problem right now, (besides the reconsturction area) is the icons on the top.

Here's a few more updates from all the suggestions and comments.

Have the username and PMs where chadwick 08 had it

and the background colors of the tab titles are TOO pale, the colours under them are :x and I don't like the old style border/footer, I prefer Space Guy's footer without the little bit sticking up.

Just a start on the header as a flash file. I know people will bitch, but someone had to do it :p

gimme a hug you!

How will contents be queried? All once loaded or when the particular tab is selected?

Anyway, here's an update. I'm still not happy with the middle section. But I gota get back to my folio work, or I'm going to fail my subject >_<

OK, that looks awesome (Y) The news items might need some work, and I think we need colors like timdorr's flash file has  But other than that, I love it :D

it's all nice and dandy but what about us who are not "girth challenged", who run windows maximized at more than 640x resolutions?

at 1280x that layout takes up just half the screen...and forced vertical colums are so 2years ago in design.

also would be interesting to try ability to collapse news story into a single headline with a + symbol next to each story
